Hubby came in this morning stamping his feet and shaking his head. We have new neighbors across the creek and in their hurry to fix their place up and make themselves a nice beach they have taken all the brush off the creek banks. We live across from them and when we brought our property we found the previous owner had done the same thing. It's taken us 20 years and many dollars to repair the damage. When anyone does this is ruins the natural flow of the creek during flood stage and floods the land. It's against the law and there will be a large fine that they have to pay but that won't fix the problem. I feel very sorry for these folks, I am sure they didn't know what they were doing and I remember how excited we were when we first moved here and what expectations we had. After I reminded Hubby of what had happened here he did settle down a bit. But all we can do is wait and see what happens next. There should be some way to warn people who have never lived near a flood area of what they should and shouldn't do.

The problem lies in our attitude. We humans think we can shape nature to our whim and don't bother to think about what would happen if we destroyed or changed something. Same with animals--don't understand them, just make them do what we want them to do. Humans are arrogant and we sometimes have to pay a hefty price for it. I understand them wanting a beach but they must be city folk. Anyone who ever spent any amount of time on a farm or in the woods would know not to interfere without researching and projecting consequences.

I am not sure if people believe themselves to be God, or Superman, but you are so right. We do not accept natural consequencwes until it reaches up and bites us.

Good stewardship of our land and natural resources is a responsibility that used to be taught and learned. As greed and the desire for self gratification has increased there is a lack of attention to being good stewards of the land. Perhaps you can organize a community group to assist in helping to provide information. Some communities have a welcome package that is given to all new residents to the area. A small brochure included in the packet would possibly help. You and all your neighbors along this creek have an oppurtunity to actually contribute to the improvement of your area. Do not let it pass by, get involved and try to help make a change. The time is now. If you don't do it, who will? Don't wait for someone else to get into legal trouble and do more damage to the creek bank. Make an impact. Organize an informal meeting with the residents and discuss what you can accomplish. What an oppurtunity that has presented itself to you. You can make something bad that has happened into something for good.

I probably would not have known this, but then again, if I owned rural property a beach would not be my priority. I think their Realtor should have warned them about this, but it may be that the agent never expected anyone to be so naive, or as dragon says,so arrogant. I hope it does not take them a full twenty years to recover.

Why should the Realtor warn them? She might loose the sale by doing so. Her job is to sell the property. What the people do with the property after it is sold is none of her business. After that is up to the buyer. She actually could be sued if she gives out to much information and the sale doesn't go through as a result of her big mouth. Life isn't always fair or pleasant, but it is what it is.

Sad to hear that savypat, but just remember how you feel when you moved to that place? Maybe you need talk to them and say some good advice to your neighbors. Say what we can/can't do there. I am 100% sure that you solve this problem only with talking. They are new and do not know this things. But, yes It is not nice If they think only for themselves not for others. I hope this problem would be solved and you make new friends too. Take care, Have a nice day!

Turns out they are not new here only the new owners of this property. They had made no mention of what they intended to do to the creek to anyone. I don't know if he even thought ahead at all, i think he just had his big equiptment there and suddenly thought it would be nice to get rid of all that brush so they could see the creek from their new home. Now who knows what will happen.

Why don't you just go over to let them know before they start to do any damage, why do poeple like to watch and see what happens and wait for the damage to be done...I'm sure they would be so greatful for your warning, you would save them so much trouble, hassle and money.... :)

It sounds like that would be so easy. First we couldn't see what they were doing, next until they destroyed the creek bank they didn't break the law. At the time we hard their machines we thought they were just clearing off an old house, perfectly legal. It wasn't until the next day when we went to turn on the water that we saw the bank. Damage was already done. By the way they had removed the old house also. We have since talked to them and will now try to find a way to help cure the problem before the floods come.

I feel sorry and sad for your neighbors for not knowing this. This would only hurt them in ways they do not know yet as of the moment. They could be the victims of their own actions. How long did it take for them to take the brush off the creek banks?

I thought they were just removing an old home to put a new one in, I could hear the work but not see it. It was going on all day and it wasn't until the next day that Hubby could see what they had done. I have no idea what will happen next to try to fix some of this before the rains.

Well I would have thought that they would have been warned about it when they moved in, I mean I would not have known this until I was told I do hope it can be sorted and that they do not go to hard on these People

Hi savypat I'm very surprised that when new people move into those areas, this is not explained to them. As you say there should be a way to warn them. Blessings.

Really, there ought to be a requirement that they be given this information when they purchase the property. Of course, even then, there's no guarantee that they will read it...

Hi, savypat. I am so sorry about this. I wished that your neighbors would just think of others besides themselves. What they have done is a very selfish act. If the damage is done, then there is no way that it can be reversed. I hope that things will not get too worse when the newcomers arrive. Your neighbors should think smart, not dumb.

I would not have been aware of what you have told us but I have never lived in the country and I doubt I would want to create myself a beach anyway! It’s the shame that your neighbours’ ignorance has caused so much damage. I have learnt something here today...I pray that the damage is not as extensive as it was when you first moved to your property.

That wasn't wise from their part. This time they'll have to learn from their own mistake. They should be given an informative brochure.A good gift for a housewarming party.

The moral of this story is don't mess with nature. always think that there is a reason for anything that is.
