Ok all you facebook lovers out there did you know...?

Last year I received a email message from a dear friend of mine that while he was waiting on an appointment, he picked up a magazine and was flipping through the pages when he noticed a picture of his wife, married for 15 years, in an ad for a dating site. It appears that while many facebook members may not be aware that when you sign-up for membership you are actually allowing publication of all your personal pics to be utilized for advertising purposes. So he advised me on how to go about opting out of this optional obligation. So today, my boyfriend received a message that now facebook is now publishing all of our personal demographics, by that I mean address, city, state, zip and wait gets better cellphone numbers... I must admit the entire world has my cellphone number, I have well over 300 numbers in my blackberry. However, those that do have it, I chose for them to have!! Not sure if myLot will allow explicit detail, and or if this goes against any the TOS but please, if you are not okay with this go to your preferences on Facebook and remove that, dig around in there and you will see how much right you have given facebook to distribute about you. This is the reason I am so very happy with myLot as I feel not only is my information protected, but I do not have to worry about them being so huge that I may find myself in a magazine of some sort. My question are you okay with that? Are you okay with me finding you on Facebook and getting every detail about you?

How sad to hear that. I'm a very private person and I rarely publish information regarding my personal info. I haven't checked the details I've put in on my FB account, but as far as I can remember I made them all private when I signed up. I limited who can see my phone numbers and address to just a few people. I hope I won't be shocked if I checked and found out that everything now can be seen publicly. No, definetely it's not okay with me if everyone can see all the datails about me. I will just cancel my account if they removed the option to make my details private again.

The options are there and are set by default, most of us never bother to check as we get comfortable with the account. Go to your preferences and check all of them. Make sure you do if you do not want to have it visible. Thanks for responding and have a great night.

That kind of thing can split up marriages aswell as whole familys.I also think that it is really bad that other people can get all those details as i think that if i wanted for people to see where i live i would put it on there the same as if we wanted our friends to know other details like our phone numbers that we all thought were private.

I suppose we are all so quick to sign up to sites without thoroughly reviewing the user agreements. Let's face it we don't always read through everything and sign up. Yes imagine that a simple misunderstanding can ruin even the strongest relationship. Thanks for stopping by.

Yes, I have heard about little things like this in the time I have been a member there, and it is Sad to know that they can do things like this. It makes you wonder what type of site this really is. Somehow I am actually surprised that no one has ever challenged it and won? I guess it only helps to keep us on our toes and more aware.

I would not. I would only get my personal information to those who actually know me, and just give partial information to those who are some important person that I want to get info from such as Rachel Ray. I heard that Facebook has a new way of privacy giving up, but sometimes I wish that they could go after each detail as to watch part to give up and what part to not. I would not give up my cell phone number to anybody - well that is because I am on the basic plan and do not want to get charge for a whole lot of calls received.

Perhaps but with so much unknown on the net I thought I forewarn people. Glad to hear you are very careful as it seems.

They do make it clear that they can do this, but too many people have faith in the fact that privacy will be kept no matter what they don't read. it is a simple matter of settings and if you opt out of them being able to use the info or not. In reality though people should not be putting up this sort of info on any sites as this is how info theft happens.

Well I guess I don't think about it because I do not have that info on there any way.

Yes that they do, but please remember that each time they upgrade you have to go back in and re-set your settings. Thanks for responding.

that is why you dont put too much personal identification on facebook or anywhere. once you put anything on facebook or the internet, its is there for the world to see.

It is always to good waste few minutes going through the guidelines of the sites we intend to join.they mention all of these kinda BS points somewhere in the nook of a corner and people are so lazy that they tend to overlook.it isn't advisable to have our personal details especially our address in networking sites---you never know there are so many sick ones in this virtual world and you might end up in a problem.i prefer to mylot over facebook though...i got some nice excuses to be here than in anyother site .great day.

Sorry I did not respond sooner as I never received an alert and I am now fumbling through unresolved started discussions and noticed you had responded. You are so right, I have been a facebook member for almost 3 years but for the last eight months I only use it to promote articles but that is about it. I get daily alert on my blackberry and ignore them all as I think facebook is a complete waste of my time. I am a very happy myLot member and can't imagine utilizing another site outside of myLot. Have a great weekend friend.

That's really shocking. These social networking sites, for that matter any website that we register with, clearly state in their privacy policy that they are not going to sell our personal information to any third parties. I'm a great fan of Facebook and I don't like it selling our personal information.

Yes this really horrible, but that is why we must always, always read terms of service as there is where the real information is. Especially in the fine print. Make sure you check your preferences and if you do not want your information published you must check to be sure you have that checked off. Have a great day and thanks for responding.

Oh wow! Is this for real? whoa, I am now checking my facebook preferences. lol! I am aware that on any social networking site, we have to be careful of what we post. Time and time again, we have heard horror stories. This is a great information and thank you for sharing this. In fairness to facebook, when they recently upgraded their privacy settings, it was all around the web. They are also concerned of our privacy and maybe due to a lot of people taking advantage of the site, that is why they felt the need to be more concerned. I already changed my settings and am now careful of what I share online. Have a great day!

Oh yes it is important to keep things as simple as possible as what we really want to share we can do in other ways. Sad though there are some who have a lot of fun there and do not realize how dangerous some of it can be. I am glad you don't need to worry to much about this.
