Most people don't make enough money for the little indulgences

My assistant and I have a long standing argument. I say that I like working because it enables me to engage in what I consider small indulgences, as opposed to just being on benefits. Working also helps my self-esteem because it makes me feel more independent. It's a very good thing not to depend on the government for every little thing. It's also a nice safety net for when benefits get screwed up, as mine are now slightly.
My assistant says that most people who work can't afford little luxuries, like gym memberships, going out to lunch on birthdays, and donating small amounts to good causes. All of most people's money goes to: food, rent, and bills.
Is this true? Can you afford the little luxuries of life? Does working help pay for them?

We cannot afford things like memberships, we go out to eat very little, and we have very little to donate. We are lucky to keep our utilities and mortgage paid. The money I have to do a little extra is done by using coupons for groceries and really searching for sale items for our necessities.

That sounds like the majority of the working class, sometimes its all we can do just to keep up with rent/mortgage, utilities and food.

I can, and I do get some of these things, but I can't do it all of the time of course. I work and I have a nice salary, my only problem is that my rent is too high. But yeah, in my case I can get all of those things if I want, and also do some travelling and shopping and stuff, which all fits into the same category I think.

I agree with both of you to a certain extent. I am now unemployed due to the the economy. And I have to watch every penny I spend. I have to put my money to good use ( paying bills etc.) Little indulgences are out of the question now so is benefits. I now know what it means by the statement.." you don't miss your water til the well run dry"). And your assistant is correct especially for those that have a reduce in wages and a family to take care of. As for right now little indulgences, for a person that have a family or responsibilties to care for is out of the question.
