When One is Accused of Lying

Another mylotter's discussion brought up a memory. I was eight years old, and my family was out to dinner. I ordered off the kiddie menu. You had to be 12 years old or younger to be able to order from that menu. When I ordered, the waitress refused to let me pick something off the kiddie menu because she said I was not 12 or under (I have always looked older). My dad asked her if she was accusing us of lying, and she said yes. My dad does not get angry easily, but when his integrity is questioned - now that upsets him. I remember he called the manager over. From then on, we took my birth certificate with us when we went out to eat. At least we did until I was twelve and no longer used the kiddie menu. If someone questions your integrity, is that about the worst possible insult you could get?

Hi Amber! That must have been really horrible! How dare they question your father! I guess they had no idea who they were dealing with! Unfortunately, there are people who do try to pass off their older children as younger so it wasn't really that they were picking on you exactly. I hate to be accused of lying because my father was a pathological liar and I hate liars more than anything! My mother is constantly accusing me of lying about everything and it really upsets me because I am always telling her the truth! But, that is her and she will never change. That is one of the reasons I don't like to even speak to her because no matter what I say to her she believes everything is a lie. Not a great feeling to have a mother like that and she knows how much I hated my father.

I would have been furious. Who are the workers, to stand there and argue with you. I would say that would be one of the worst insults that I could get.

That is one of the things that will make me really angry. I do not lie, and to be accused of lying is such an insult. That waitress should have taken your parent's word for your age, as it really did not cost the restaurant a lot, but it could have cost them a regular customer. We never lied about our age to get in places and that was horribly rude for her to assume that your family was.

Your father must have been so angry; I don’t blame him at all because I hate being accused of something I did not do. Accusing someone of lying is messing with their integrity as a person and it’s the worst insult. Don’t you love proving accusers wrong?

hi Pam ;) sorry to hear about your memory. I think I would have done the same like your dad, because they accused us to lie when we're telling the truths. Specially it's about our childrens, which we put them at the first place. I'd have get insulted if someone questions my integrity, it might not be the worst possible insult but it was bad, that's all..And i'd do anything to proves that my integrity is not supposed to be question for that reason..

Why could not adult order from a kiddie menu? In restaurants and hotels, I often ordered from kiddie menu, cause I could not finish eating adult portion. It was a horrible waitress you encountered.

Yeah, that happens sometimes..thankfully now days they have those identification cards for kids or they do in our area. Has the kids information on them. But I have seen this happen before. My niece was 10 and she looked about 14..but it did get her a free meal since it upset her so much. I guess they felt bad they made a little girl cry..lol.

Yes! I am not a person that lies..not even just a bit.....well I guess if someone asks a personal question and they are struggling for a positive answer I might fib. But I tell the truth for the most part...and I expect people to trust me and also respect the fact.

Wow, that waitress had some nerve, I can't believe she did that. My daughter has the opposite problem, she looks too young. At 18 people thought she was 12 and she hated it, but realizes that as she gets older, she will appreciate it when she does start looking her age, or at least like an adult. (she just turned 21) I think being accused of lying would be the worse insult, because I try my hardest to not lie, because unwillingly, humankind are lier's by nature, I don't want to do it on purpose..

hi ambiepam y es I think it really is about the worst possible insult you could ever get. One time I was questioned on using a senior bus pass and told I was not old enough. I smiled sweetly said thanks now look at my birth certificate. will you now accept my senior bus pass? he nodded and turned really red.I had had it with bus d rivers accusing me of cheating myhubby did cheat but he had grey hair so they believed him. my hair at that time was more pepper and salt.

what a horrible thing to happen when you know you are telling the truth. well i think that that is the most insulting statement in qustioning ones integrity, and you also told us that the waitress accused your dad of lying directly.

I get really irritated when my integrity is question because I believe no one would know me more than myself and if a person is accusing me of lying for something I do not then this is the limit as I can be really angry when time seeks so.

This remind of a similar incident that happened to me.. I was 12 or 13 at that time and we went to visit Taj Mahal..(there children below 16 have some concession to visit it) there we went with my cousins..one of them was 17 but she was shorter than me..and I always looked quite matured... so..when we were standing in queue..the gate people stopped me asking me to pay..and my cousin was allowed for free...even though she was 17... then my parents started arguing with them...saying she's a school going girl in 7th standard.. still they wouldn't believe us....and my parents were frustrated... but later they agreed and allowed me in... It doesn't feel good..when you are thought of someone older than your actual age.. but..it had happened to me many a times..!

It is too arrogant for that sales lady to answer a client that she doubt them, first of all you are a client you must be asked in a nice way and she doesn't have the right to doubt anyone's credibility. I don't think there are protocols like that in any restaurant or fast chain that a waitress would threat a customers in appropriate manner when they doubt' their credibility.

In my opinion yes it can be the worst insult to you. But in your case, I don't think that was a big deal, that was more a misunderstanding then a shot at your integrity. Honestly, I wouldn't care what that waitress thought about me or what I was trying to do because it's not like she's doing anything mega important with her life, so who cares if she thinks your lying just to save a few bucks even if you weren't. But that's just my opinion though.

Anyone flat out saying a person is lying doesn't sound like a misunderstanding. Once those actual words are out... And a few bucks mattered then. My family was poor, and when we were able to go out to eat, it was a treat.
