LOL!!! Not so funny!

I have noticed that some myLot users post a snide, insulting response or comment and either write LOL before or after the nasty remark. Is this supposed to mean it is a joke or do not report this remark as it has LOL which dilutes the nastiness. I want to respond "not funny and I know you are being insulting" but I just ignore it. Have you ever received remarks like this? What do you do?

It seems to me that I have seen you do the same thing, but maybe I was just interpreting your response incorrectly, especially since you followed it with "rofl" emoticons. Perhaps that is the same thing that is happening with the responses that you are talking about. Surely all the comments with "LOL" are not insults, so how do we know which ones are and which ones aren't? I kind-of thought that was a way to let people know that you aren't being mean or serious, but maybe that was just my misunderstanding. If I mean to insult someone, then I definitely would not hide it or try to "dilute" it with an "LOL" or a "smilie" emoticon. Would you?

No I would not do that! Therefore I disagree that you have seen me do the same thing because if I have something to say I say itloud and clear!. One thing I am not is two faced. Actually I am not aware of ever having responded to you in a snide or nasty way and then slapping a LOL onto it to take the sting out of my response/comment.

Oh no, I was not meaning me. I don't think that you and I have interacted a lot, but when we did I do not remember you being rude or nasty. You are absolutely right about that. We might not have always agreed, but you stated what you had to say frankly and yet without being rude when you did not agree with what I was saying. I like that. Everything does not have to be all candy and flowers and sweetness, but civility is a must, in my opinion.

I know just what you mean whiteheather and it depends on what was said, if I'll do anything or respond to it or not. Sometimes it's a way of nervousness on the person's part and putting lol in is either showing that or they're trying to downsize the insult. If I know the person then I could take it with a grain of salt but only to a point but if I don't know the person, I might take it personally and ask around to see what others think and then go from there. BTW, to let you and others know that I've been really busy cross stitching that project for my dad and is why I'm not on here often. I'm about 3/4 of the way done but still a lot more to do which takes up so much time BUT I'll be back eventually! I promise! Hugs to you my friend!

Quite a lot of times, they are "inside jokes" that others can take the wrong way, no matter what bells & whistles they might use. I haven't seen it much as joking around, but most of the time, they seem serious. When i come across stuff like that, especially if it's not obvious joking around, they get reported. I suppose that next time I run into one that's joking around, I can hijack it, & take that particular discussion into a VERY oddball direction (such as turning someone's political discussion into discussions about objects from outer space maybe?).

My regret was not being here often enough. The problem I seem to have run into is that there are many discussions that have been posted, & right now, it seems taht I have been doing more reading than anything else. I'm thinking of one PERFECT candidate who only posts in politics (the one who announced "discussion closed") who we can hijack discussions - but it DOES take completely left-field & completely away from the box (not just out of the box) thinking of a transition into what to turn the discussion into. Then there are also some of those from the other side. One of my last days here, it seemed that some of us turned someone's rant about the Tea party people into a discussion about coffee & cappuccino.

Thank you! That would certainly put an interesting slant on some of the Political discussions. Nice to hear from you, it has been some time since I have seen you around.

OH Yeah, this has happened to me several times. I post, with as much lady like reverence as I can muster, " how stupid are you?" or "do What" last week I had one who said "was I for real?" and one of our favorite members even came to bat for me with "of course she's real, how dumb are you?" It might not have been in those exact words but I have not heard from the bad member since. Still we have to remember we do have those who are not so bright here..........not so nice, not so balanced as we'd like all members to be. Most times I just hit the delete button and move on. Stupidity just grows if you poke it ! Best leave those stupid ones alone......

Oh just think about it ! When someone comes back with a dumb a$$ response, we tend to get a little hot under the collar and then we go back with our own brand of stupidity and only make matters worse........... so, yes, poking stupidity just makes the matter bigger and uglier and therefore it grows........ Please do ignore the stupid ones they ain't worth your time to type a response....................... hugs, quita

I think it is supposed to mean, "just joking" and is their attempt to not take responsibility for their nastiness. That way, if someone is rightfully offended, they can hide behind the lol and say you're taking it too seriously. It hasn't happened to me and I'm not sure what I'd do. But, I'm not fooled by those three letters. But, I never understood why people put lol at the end of things that aren't meant to be funny. It doesn't even have to be an insult. Someone might say, "I like bananas. LOL." And, I'm wondering is it funny that you like bananas? Do you think LOL is another type of punctuation mark like a period and all statements need one at the end? Most times LOL just seems pointless.

Excellent response! Very well said! That is exactly my take on LOL on occasion.

I agree with your "just joking" comment Angelwriter. When I put "lol" on the end of the comment it means if I was speaking to you face to face I would be laughing as I say these things. In Australia it's called "taking the mickey". When I do it, it's certainly not meant to be offensive and when I receive such a comment I tend to see it as a bit of a joke or a tease...whatever the case, the lol is meant to soften any perceived sting.

I see this all the time and I do find it rude and insulting. It's acceptable to make a point and express a view that disagrees with the original poster or a comment, but when you follow that point with "LOL" and a smiley face, it becomes something else. It's as if you appended the words "you moron" after the statement. I have been tempted many times to answer a particular mylotter with "at least I show you the respect of not putting LOL after every point I make in our debate". The LOL is disrespect and it is debasing and it is insulting to the intelligence of the person it is directed against. If it were up to me, all smiley faces would be banned as well, since they bring the discussion down to less mature level. Perhaps they are useful in discussions about parenting or family issues or music, but they take away from the seriousness of some issues and are demeaning.

I agree you see it the same way as I do. Although I am guilty of using the smiley faces but not as a instrument to cover up what I really mean to say. I usually come across loud and clear.

I totally agree w/ you rollo1. I've seen comments w/ the smiley faces after they've said something thats insulting. Not to mention rude. Some people also start discussion comments w/ no honey, or oh dear. Adding insult to injury. smh. shame!

I haven't received any that I remember but I've seen plenty of them. I would just ignore them if I received any, which is probably why I don't remember any of them. If you're going to insult someone you should just do it, not hide behind an emoticon, that's my opinion. The problem is that people don't know how to offer criticism or disagreement in a non-confrontational way so they resort to that.

I guess some people get a kick out of making a confrontational response or comment .

I don't remember seeing this before after a nasty remark. I guess I wasn't paying much attention to it. I would probably just ignore it though. I only use my LOL's when it's put after something funny that I said.

ohh sorry for it :( no to me noone ever did that in my discussions and i really wish it doesnt happen. thats not respect people. i dont know why there are people that just love to tease others. i guess they have nothing better to do so they like to piss others off. thats only reason i see for them to act that way. wish it doesnt happen to you again but if it happens report it to my lot. noone has the right to tease others.

Once I put my opinions out for all to read, it is not as important to me if they agree or disagree as if they respond at all. Since this is a public forum, i go under the philosophy of QTip. Quit Taking It Personal. So whatever they say does not personally bother me. Of course it is nice if everyone was polite and respectful, but what makes MyLot any different than any other environment either virtual or phyisical in the world? Let MyLot deal with the real anti social individuals while I continue to enjoy rewarding and stimulating discussions.

No so far I haven't seen it here but I have seen it on other sites and I agree that LOL before or after a rude comment doesn't make it funny. I guess some people are just downright mean or they don't get it. As the old saying goes if u can't say something nice don't say anything at all.

There is a difference between being cute and being mean. If I were going to be deliberately mean I certainly would not mask it with LOL. LoL is for real humor and laughter. I do not think I have been on the receiving end, but who knows, it may have just gone swoosh over my head.

It's a lot worse on other websites so I don't really report people on here.. Well I haven't yet anyway. Who knows what other people's intentions are when putting LOL, it could just be a joke. It just means laugh out loud, so in most cases I'm sure its nothing to serious that I'd be bothered by enough to report it. Sometimes sarcasm and jokes and whatnot don't get transferred well over the computer, so I wouldn't want to report someone without knowing for sure if their intention was to be rude.
