Ever drop your cell phone in water?

I was at the gym yesterday and a woman was talking, she said that she was talking to her mother on her cell phone while doing dishes and...ut oh, she dropped her phone in the dishwater. She said that she immediately removed the phone from the water, dried it off with a towel them filled a large zip lock bag with uncooked rice, inserted the phone in the middle of the rice, zipped it up and left the phone in the bag overnight. In the morning, she took her phone out of the rice bag and Voila! it worked!! Wow! I wished that I'd have thought of that! Further reading online about submerged cell phones, you are advised to remove the battery to keep from short circuiting your phone. I just thought that the bag of rice was a clever idea. Have you ever dropped your phone in water? and if you did, were you able to recover it to working condition?

Aw, I am sorry. That's a shame that it happened when it was such an important gift. It doesn't matter what it cost. I hope that you eventually got it working again.

No, I hope I never will. But I did manage to spill water into my TV remote control and my laptop previous and all I did was to dissemble them to wipe it dry. But then there are still some areas that are unreachable, and thus, I left in lying on my living room till the next day then I used it. And yes, it wasn't damaged. I didn't know about the uncooked rice method and it's pretty amazing that it works well. Definitely don't look forward to a day that I will have to use this but thanks for sharing!

Yes, I thought that it was a really unique way to dry out a cell phone, too. I hope that as you say, never need to try it, but you never know. Glad your remote worked okay, you can also use a hair dryer if you are in a hurry!

Right, switch off the power.. I hadn't even thought of that. Thanks for the great advice! Cheers to you, too..

Yes. It's a method to know but hopefully won't need to use. I think I did use the hair dryer before on my laptop because it's quite difficult for me to dissemble (and also I wanted to minimize the possibility of causing damaging my laptop). Thus, points to note in such situations are: 1. remembered to switch off the power 2. wipe/dry off the visible water areas 3. dry it with a blower, if possible, use the cold wind rather than the hot air as you never know if the inside component can tolerate the heat from the hot air 4. leave it at somewhere windy for at least a day before trying to switch it on again. Cheers~

I never had the experience of dropping my cellular phone in the water. I guess your friend was lucky considering that it was not damage. A friend of mine drop his mobile phone in the tub and it was no longer useful after that. Sad to note that it was such an expensive phone. Well, I guess your friend did the right thing. Perhaps the battery was remove right away and prevented further damage. The rice perhaps absorb the moisture.

Yes, you are right, the rice absorbed the moisture, I would have never thought of putting the phone is a bag of rice, though. I have also heard you can use a hair dryer or leave the phone in a warm not hot oven overnight.

yes that's the hard part of it. lucky to get these phones working, but if not, it's kinda painful specially if the phone is expensive and high-end!!!

Hi saigonwarrior, No, i have never dropped my phone in water, plus i can't do that to my touchscreen phone! It would lead to some of the worst consequences it being a huge touch screen phone. Yes, you heard that right, the best thing is to remove the battery immediately and dry it and then re-assemble later. My friend has dropped his two phones in the water the the screens got damaged but the phone was in working and responding condition. Bag of rice, i never thought about that. If i had dropped my phone i would have removed the battery and would have separated each parts of the phone for drying. Silicon balls would help too!

Silicon balls probably would work, too. But most of us don't have those on hand, but most of us do have rice at home. Well, those of us that eat rice! Like me! I love it!

Yeah, only a few of us consider keeping the silicon balls after buying a new flask, but everyone has rice.

I did drop my very first cell phone .That was ten years ago already . I was doing laundry and at the same time communicating thru text messaging to some friends about our oath taking ceremony. While waiting for replies, i put the cell phone it the chest pocket of my overalls and continue doing laundry. I bend over the washing machine to untangle the towels that's washing. Just as i hit the rotation power of the washing machine the phone slipped from the pocket and drop into the washing machine, water, detergent towels and all. I turn off power right away and have to find the cell phone under all the towels that i was washing. I immediately removed the battery and place the wet phone and battery at the window of my bedroom where it can air dry and sun dry at the same time , because the sun would hit my window during noon time. After about 2 days of leaving it there,it worked again perfectly as if nothing happened.

I am glad that you got it working again, you were lucky then, especially since it was submerged in the washer and you had to fish it out. Removing the battery was smart, I didn't know that you are supposed to remove it until I looked up wet cell phones and what to do. Putting it in the sunshine is also a good idea, I have heard that a blow dryer and a warm oven also works.

I think that she was lucky, too. The toilet seems to be the most popular place for dropping a phone. I am not sure why though...lol

LOL That's funny. You should have gifted it to someone that you don't like very well, but one close enough so that you could see them using it. Thanks for the laugh, you made my day.

Yes, I ever dropped my cell phone in the water.. It was accidentally happened. I was in hurry, and the phone slided down from my jeans' pocket when I wanted to put on my jeans after from the toilet. It slided down inside the toilet. It stopped. I dried it with the hand dryer at the public toilet. It couldn't work for a few days. Then I brought it to the nearest phone service stall. Fortunately there was nothing serious happened. At least, I still can go online, accept phone calls and text messages. My camera was broken because of it. Actually it worked. I still think that the technician took it. Forgive me for the bad thought. Because it worked at first, then he asked me to bring it back to him, because my mini memory card slot was broken and he wanted to fix it. Before I took it home, he checked everything in front of me, and my camera still working at that time. The next day, he just told me that the camera was broken. When I told him that it was working on the previous day, he told me that he wanted to give me the new one. But then when I came there, he told me the camera hadn't come. Fortunately, I don't really like to take picture of myself. I felt trap. And I don't like that kind of feeling.

Yes, you never know if he switched the phones or not. It may have stopped working, you never know. I hate to feel that way about others also. I always wish to believe that most people are honest. If you ever need technical help, maybe the next time you need to seek out another service technician just to be on the safe side. Sorry to hear about your phone though. I use my camera all of the time, I take pictures of a lot of things. Family, construction that we are doing on the house, just anything!

Yeah I've dropped it in the toilet a couple of times luckily before I did my business LOL and I was able to take it out and have it dried. It was working after a few days. I also dropped it in sea water when I was out on the beach in Turkey but unfortunately that was the last day I used it. I loved that phone as well :( I'd only had it a few months :P

Ah.. the seawater ruined it. Sorry to hear about that. A shame that you had to buy a new one. It seems that you are not the only one to have the dropsies around the toilet..lol I am amazed how many people have actually said that they've dropped one in there! :)

I too drop my phone into the toilet bowl before. Immediately removed the battery and later used the hair dryer to dry it. The graphic seems distorted at first but a few days later, it seems to work. However, some functions and key press become less sensitive. Just a word of advice, do not bring your phone into the toilet or bathroom if possible. You'll never know what might happen next. :D

That sounds like a catastrophe! I really like the sound of the rice technique though, I shall bear that in mind should I ever suffer the misfortune of dropping my mobile phone into a bowl of dishwater! Thankfully I have never experienced this but I'm thinking that they should start making mobile phones water proof now just in case of this eventuality! I know that they are making some phones shock resistant now and that can only be a good thing. No, the worst thing that is happening to my mobile is the fact that it tends to pick accumulate dust easily! Andrew

I think they should make the phones water resistant also. Like waterproof watches of course once it is opened it would have to be sealed again, but still, it seems a lot of people DO drop the phones in the toilet..hehe..just saying! I thought they made covers to help protect some phones, or maybe I read that wrong, that would even be worth the investment if you are one of those people that drop the phones often.

It happened only once. And maybe it was switched off when it dropped but when I restarted it i saw something unusual as I noticed it is being auto formatted and all my contacts, sms, notes gone. The phone was absolutely fine but the data were lost. I still regret for not being alert as I was on water and i had cell phone with me. Thank God I had a cheap cell phone then else it could be damaged more than that cheap one.

Yeah, I deed experienced dropping a cell phone in the water, the unit was too wet and I haven't have it in its normal condition anymore. The submersion from the water may have caused and incurred something bad, so i decided to buy a new one.
