I just got through answering a discussion, and when I looked at the tags after I submitted the response, someone had tagged it a guideline violation and a poll type question. And I was thinking, what?! It wasn't something where you give a one word answer, like what is your favorite type of ice cream. This question required a detailed answer, and an answer that is guaranteed NOT to be the same for every person who responds. Are people really reading these discussions and understanding what is really a violation? Has anyone noticed tags that indicate the discussion has been reported, but you can see it obviously has not violated any guidelines? I even looked to see if someone else's responses could have been a violation, but no. I'm not singling anyone out, I have no idea who reported that discussion. It just strikes me as weird.

I saw the discussion you are talking about and I think it is unjust to label it a poll type question. It is one that may have been done before although I haven’t checked that. Personally I would have responded to it and I would not report it. It is up to admin to decide I guess. I don’t have a problem with that one. I wish people wouldn’t tag like that because even though admin may decide not to delete it, it may put people off responding.

I think these days it is hard not to post something that has not been posted before. For instance, she posted a discussion that was pretty much what I posted last week. But she didn't know that, and sometimes the search function doesn't show up all the similar discussions. Maybe mylot should post something about which discussions should never be posted again. lol That actually might not be too bad.

These tags can take one round the bend. There was a tag 'state' and when I searched it took me to all Indian States!!

I always thought a tag was meant to help users locate topics and by stating any topic as 'duplicate' and such what purpose would be served? At best if one feels it is so they have to report it but mentioning that in the tag section is something that I do not understand.

It seems that some users tag what they think is a violation as a way of warning others that the discussion will be deleted. Of course many times they are wrong as there is no violation at all

I must say that it is very rare for me to report a discussion - it has to be a complete violation!!

I think that your topic touches on several things. - should users tag with a violation? - what exactly is a poll? - how long before a topic can be posted again before re-discussion? I report when I see violations BUT I only tag when I am absolutely certain that what I am reporting willbe removed by admin. These include plagiarised topics/responses, topics/responses containing referral links and blatant violations such as 'milestones' or repeated faqs queries. When I am not certain that the post concerned will be considered as a violation by admins then I DON'T leave a tag ever as ir woul dbe misleading for those who intended responding. A poll is (also) a survey. When a topic asks 'which do you prefer, this or that?' then there is no doubt at all. When a topic asks (for the sake of example) 'What time to you go to bed?' or 'how many hours do you spend here on myLot?' it is a poll/survey. It is not a discussion. There are no specifics by myLot as to how much time should pass before a topic is no longer considered a 'repeat' and this IMO needs clarification.

Hi Amber~ I think that there is a bit too much of that "I'm telling" mentality going on around here! I almost never "tag" anything including my own infrequent discussions so if anyone does put tags on it I know it wasn't me! I also don't tag anyone elses discussions either! And I think that it is very wrong for someone else to decide to tag a discussion or report a discussion just because they don't agree or don't like a response! And that is not what the "reporting" is for and apparently those that do this are not properly aware of the TOS or just out to make trouble! What they don't realize is that false reporting will work against them!

I think users should be restricted from being able to add tags to discussion without responding to it. May be that could help, if some people like to play with discussions.

Hi mysdianait I think some people like to tag discussion with terms which are not related with the discussion at all. At least with their responses we could get an idea who it could be, plus those who don't take part in discussions, they should not have the right to tag discussions. That is what i believe.

@mysd, I do a lot of discussion reading which helps me get better understanding of all the guidelines. Is it so people can tag without even responding to the actual discussion. This is the first I hear of this and can't imagine wanting to tag without placing a response. hmmm... interesting. Thank you in advance for you response.

This does not mean that the discussion WILL be deleted, if there is no violation Admin will not delete it.

I know that. I just think it is a ridiculous thing for people to do. Because like you said, it won't be deleted anyway.

Things that happen to a few friends I have on here. I guess it is just someone else's way of causing problems for their discussion by doing that and having a few of their friends do that as well. I have seen a few that were deleted but I seen nothing wrong with the discussion and other times I have seen discussions I have no clue why they even survived because of the violations in them I guess it just means no one had reported then yet I guess.

I question how this could be a duplicate, or that one could be either. The thing is, people either do this for meanness or they just do not understand and so are stating their opinion. They should state that opinion in a response if they are going to take the time to do so in a tag.

I haven't come across anything like that yet.....But in any group you have those who think they know what's going on.....but in reality don't. Its like telling someone directions and they aren't really listening to you.

I am just as confused as you ambie, which is why I have a friend I contact to see if a certain discussion is a violation. Sometimes it is right on the border line and I can't determine whether is it a good or bad post..

Hi AmbiePam, I have just looked at the discussion in question. In my opinion, it is indeed poll type and that kind of question has been asked so many times in the discussion, thereby, that makes it Duplicate topic. So both of which violate Discussion Guidelines. I do, however, understand and had been irritated about people just tagging others' discussions with something which has nothing to do with the topic of discussion.

Are you sure you looked at the right one? Because it absolutely was not a poll question.

For instance, I just started a discussion, who can you call at 3am? If her discussion was a poll question, then mine would be too. And I know mine is not in violation of being a poll.

I don't know why they do it. I don't tag any of them, whether they are in the guidelines or not. I leave it up to Mylot.

Herro AmbiePam Interesting you should ask this question. I had a discussion that was labeled a poll question. I did not understand the label and asked for clarification. I looked at the definition of a poll question, I did not see how it fit. Oh, well, yes it was deleted, so I must be confused what a poll question is. I am very careful when I draft questions and usually am asking a question that requires an answer and why. I will stop here as I am still in confusion. Prosperous mylotting
