What Do You Think About Entering Contests or Sweepstakes?

United States

I used to think contests or sweepstakes were stupid because I never won anything. I used to not enter because it seemed like a total waste of time to even think that I would win something. But yesterday, I won a contest. I was ecstatic yesterday because I won a $50 Amazon gift card from Gather. I tend to not win anything, so I was so surprised when I was notified that I won the gift card. So, have you ever won a contest? What did you win? What did you have to do to enter? What do you think about entering contests or sweepstakes? Do you think entering contests or sweepstakes are a waste of time and effort?

I have won concert tickets twice. All I did to win the first set of tickets was create a facebook group and invite the venue owner to it and they gave me vip. The other tickets I won.. I just messaged the contest creator and told him how I was a huge fan and was basically listing off reasons I need tickets.. and asked them if they had any extra.. They messaged me back saying I won. They also invited me for a personal meet and greet with the singer since I was such a "huge fan." I got to hang out with her for like an hour.

Wait there was another time to that I won vip tickets.. forgot about that one. Just a couple Canadian artists. There names are Danny Fernandes and Elise Estrada and the group Girlicious was playing that night too. Yea it was alright, I liked the girl Elise Estrada.

I don't enter them much because the ones I have entered have never paid off but I know a woman that enters online sweepstakes all the time. She has won some really great prizes too. She just won 4 tickets to a Nascar race in New York. Good Luck!

I'd keep entering anyway! I mean, what do you have to lose besides a few minutes if the ocntest is free to enter? Wow, she's lucky to win all those prizes! I rarely win much.

I am a contest junkie. I spend a good portion of my day entering daily contests... and I have won. Sure the prizes were little things at first but now patience and persistence have paid off and the prizes are getting bigger. I have written a few articles on this topic, including the websites with the best contests. The first article is about my favourite website. It's a sure thing. http://webupon.com/web-talk/the-winningest-website-on-the-web/ The next two articles are about other contest websites. I don't participate in all of them but I did find some interesting. http://webupon.com/web-talk/10-fun-and-easy-contest-websites/ http://webupon.com/money-making/online-contests-2/ I have won Amazon gift cards, VISA gift cards, concert tickets, books, an all day pass at an adventure park in our area, t-shirts and tote bags, and money. I won't give up until I win a large amount of cash or a laptop. I strongly believe they will come eventually.

Thanks for links. And you wrote very nice articles! I'm actually all ready a member of MyCoolContests. I won a pair of sunglasses today. What have you won from there?

Ah. I have the same user name over there too. I currently have a photo in the contest, so I'm hoping I win--the one with the butterfly on it. I want to make their $5 chttp://www.mylot.com/images/emotes/rofl.gifash out minimum and claim it. I haven't won much there. I am loving thecelebritycafe.com though. I want that Sony Vaio! I doubt I'll get it though. I do need a new laptop.

I won a contest that was worth $300, $100 from a record store, $100 worth of tickets to a concert venue and $100 at the grocery store - I needed the food!

Well, the grocery store was starting to sell tickets to the venue and a radio station was doing the contest - if you called in the request line during the hour after your number was called, you won... I was actually the first day winner, and on the 3 number called - or was it 4th? of course, $100 went a LOT further at the grocery store or the concerts back then...

That's awesome. Yes, it's sad that $100 doesn't get you as far as it used to now.

I went through a period about fifteen years ago where I would jump through all the hoops and enter all kinds of contests and sweepstakes. I would win afew dollars but not very often and just made up for stamps and such. I even bought lottery tickets when it first started here and managed to win until the amount of players became so rediculous you had no change of winning.

Congratulations on your gift card. I enjoy joining contest and sweepstakes. Though I do not expect too much when it comes to winning one, but being able to win one would be a pleasant surprise and treat for me.

Well, I have entered the UK lottery for around 20 years every week. I have won around £10 (GB pounds) now and again, but about 6 months ago, I got 5 numbers and won £112 (approx $175 US dollars). It could have been more but there were a lot of people sharing the prize, but I was very pleased anyway! _Derek

Wow, congrats Stephanie.. IO have won some things in the past, but in drawings where you put your name in and they draw out your name..But nothing really big, once was a houseplant, (at a nursery) and another at a bar I won a bottle of Jack Daniels.(This was obviously in my wild teen years..lol) I think a 50.00 gift card is an awesome win..I only occasionally enter sweepstakes though, I don't put too much into them, but you make me think differently.

Aw thanks! Don't underestimate your winnings! Jack Daniels can be expensive. Yes, it IS awesome. I jumped into the air when I saw I won. It goes to my boyfriend's birthday present though, even though part of me wishes I could hoard it for myself.

I'm not much of a contest winner either. As a child I won a cake at a "Cake Walk" and a Barbie doll and a stuffed bear at a school carnival. As an adult I once won the office pool when I drew the World Series game ? inning that scored the most runs. That's been it, so far; but I keep trying for the big prize.

I considered myself unlucky too. Until I won a few contests. I only started entering contests a few weeks ago too. Good luck! I hope you get the big prize!

Unfortunately, only US residents can redeem prizes at Gather. They changed the rules recently. But I was wondering if you won any contests anywhere, not just on Gather.

I enjoy the chance to enter a contest or sweepstakes. i know the chances of winning are small as so many people enter. Still, I like to give it a shot. You just never know what can happen.

I believe in lottery or sweepstakes and entering into this contests is just fine as long as we are NOT spending our full time, effort and too much money on it. I am bothered receiving a winning notice wherein I did not placed even a single a bet. Most of these are bogus and deceiving people. I once was a victim of this kind of scam. A guy called me over the phone, I won an "All expense paid vacation to Boracay" and all I need to do is claim my winnings immediately. So I rushed to their site to my excitement. The prize package is as follows: For 2 days, free breakfast, lunch & dinner, free hotel accommodation, free island tours with welcome drinks. I just need to pay 25,000 pesos for the transportation.

i moderately join or buy local lottery just hoping that it might change my life..but I am not expecting much, purely I guess for the sake of fun and thrill, but I never like gambling in general. Joining contest if it is free of charge is also a moderate habit of mine.

hi stephanieannc I enter the Publishers Clearing house net sweepstakes every day but I will probably never win a thing. It costs me nothing and takes just a few minutes. I once receive a fifty dollar gift card from Metformin company for filling out a minature survey on how I liked or disliked Metformin a medication for us diabetics. they must have liked my thoughts as they sent me a fifty dollar gift card for doing the survey.lol.Metformin really has been good for me in controlling my diabetes without any side effects a nd I just told them the truth. I have not won anything else in any contests, and I have won a total of 60 dollares in those lottery things you get for a dollar. some gave me five dollars and others six and one was ten. then I paid a dollar for years and never won anything again so have quit wasting valuable dollars like that.
• United States
12 Aug 10
That's awesome that they sent you that gift card. Apparently being nice and truthful pays off once in a while. I think the most I won on those $1 lottery things was abut $5.00.

Hi Steph! Congrats on winning the Contest! Nope, I never win anything so I just fill forms out and forget about them! I think if I ever did win I wouldn't believe it anyway! I have never won anything in my entire life! My boyfriend is a "scratch off junky" and a number player and has hit the number and made some money, but he is cheap and doesn't share so what's the point?
• United States
12 Aug 10
Thank you, Opal! Well, then, if he doesn't share, when you win thousands of dollars, then he isn't getting any of it.

I don't mind entering in contests or even participate in lucky draws but I will never buy sweepstakes, the odds against small "investors" are too high. I have even advised my friend to pop her money meant for the lottery into a piggy bank, then at the end of the year, she would have accumulated some wealth and have a "strike", so to speak.

I've never entered any sweepstakes either. I don't plan on it either. I'd save my money instead. The contest I entered was free, so I entered.

i think join in this contest or sweepstakes is now or then thing, you should not have great expectation about it,or the greatest hope have ,the greatest disappoint you will. it's just anentertainment.

Yes, I tend to have my hopes up and get disappointed easily if I don't win. But I didn't for this contest and I won.
