There are different measuring sticks for success. Some believe that having a lot of wealth or fame makes them successful. Some feel that one has to take some risks to achieve success, while some others believe that we need to carefully plan our lives to become successful. It is difficult to define success successfully...I feel that as long as we achieve a certain amount of inner peace and prosperity , and are able to have a trouble free life, one can safely say that we have had a successful life.I am not too ambitious , so have no great ambitions ...what according to you would be the yard stick of success?

For me being successful is doing great in your chosen career. You may start to being a rank and file employee then reach the managerial position. That for me is already being successful. If you also have a family of your own and having a happy married life then you balance it with your great career then consider yourself being successful as well.

Yes probably true ! But it can also be argued that one lacks ambition if one is not striving to reach goals and climb new heights. Most people would link success with achievement ..

success is being comfortable and contented in what we are now... with this we can achieve happiness in our life for what we are, who we are and what we are doing

To me, success is making a positive impact on the world, and being satisfied with what you have accomplished. Also, if you are truly successfull, you will be happy with who you are and what you are doing.

Hi, thanks a lot for your response ones state of mind is definitely very important when we think of success.I have known people with lots of achievements and wealth at their disposable, but are unhappy and unloved individuals because of their attitude...

In my opinion being successful means, that you have a good job to feed your family. I don't really need much money, but I need a family who are there for me.

So very true that defining "success" successfully is not that easy. The closest that I can go about in defining Success is - Success is something about achievement. Now what is that "something" is relative and subjective from person to person. Many weigh it on monetary terms and some base it on other grounds. Personally I feel that anything that makes me feel happy and contended is success for me. I do not weigh success on monetary terms, I weigh it on providing happiness to others without hurting my sentiments and principles.

hi thesids, thanks a lot for your response I too agree that there has to be a sense of achievement when we talk about success.I remember my grandmother feeling elated after having finished pickling mangoes during season. If the pickle lasted until the next season she felt that she had done her job well...Today we all remember her and realise that no one could cook or make preserves and pickles like she did - a success story that is remembered by many generations

Success is a feeling and a state of mind to me, you have to feel it if you want to acheive it, otherwise you lose your way and your priorites become rearranged and you may even become disengaged. We have to have something that drives, put an image to success what does YOUR success look like its it a runner crossing the finishline, is it a builder building his wall of success, is he a swimmer diving into tasks and racing to complete them. Thats what success is to me being in a state of mind, where you look at everything and see the potential for a successful outcome.

Hi Ceekay, thats true it definitely is a state of mind and as such cannot be measured. Drive, motivation and goals are important and even if we are not able to do our best it really does not matter. What matters is the experience and the sense of achievement ...One can be successful in anything without wealth coming into it...

My "yard stick" for success, would have to be the expression on my face at the end of the day... I guess you could call it inner peace. If I have had a successfull day, even if it only means finishing up the chores around the house that I have been putting off, I feel content. I feel that the small successes are just as important as the large ones, and are usually easier to obtain. Also, if I leave this world having changed it for the better, even in just some small way, I would call my life a success.

Very true ! I too feel that it is the everyday matters that are important and these little things are what make life worth living for.It is the sum total of all these little things that make us feel that we have had a successful life. When we look back what stands out are small incidents that have made an impact ...

Ya indeed, there are different yardsticks that people use to measure success with. But for me success means to achieving something that I want to. And if you toil hard to get that in real sense then no one in this world can stop you from doing that. But your effort must be sincere and more importantly the things that you want to achieve must be genuine. You have to have all your resources and energies towards that end. You must thing about that every moment. You must feel guilty if you lose any moment in doing things that do not lead you towards that goal. That goal must come to you in your dreams. Well if you do that you will have things under your control and get what you want. After that you will taste the sweet pill of success.

Hi Kiran Its nice to know that you are not too ambitious LOL coz I’m like that too!!! Sometimes I feel that I’m too lazy to have run around all the time, but mostly I feel it was lack of planning at proper time. Anyways, no use crying over spilt milk…and then, when I see couples of my age running after money and career and success, I must say it’s a scary scenario. Maybe they are more super-humans than me but I do think that somewhere down the line, they are compromising for it somehow and usually that somehow is either family time or health or personal peace. There is actually no end to our wanting…so success can never be completely achieved…the key lies in being happy with what little we have and try and make the best out of it. In that sense, I must say that I’m successful…with an average job (& average pay, I must add)…I still have some good hours to spend with my son regularly (his studies and games and all), I can personally look after my family needs, take small vacations, little moments of happiness … and I feel really content with life. However, I must add that the fruit is the real identity of the quality of the plant and so I’ll be really successful if I can manage to make a good human being of my son AND of course guide him properly to his future career.

Hi sudipta, I am glad that you have been able to make a happy and contented life for you and your family.I too feel that instead of measuring success through your bank balance and fame one should start looking within oneself to see whether one has achieved what is even more important namely - contentment and inner peace..

Success is how we see the goals in our lives being met. We all measure success differently. Achieving it can take no time at all or it can take a lifetime. The best way to get success from our lives is to do our best at everything. What we may not see as success, someone else will.

Agreed ! I too believe that anything we take up in life we need to give 100 percent of ourselves otherwise there is no point.I hate to do anything in a half hearted manner however small or insignificant the job may be...thanks a lot for your response and happy mylotting

I see success in everything I do, no matter how insignificant that task may be - to state a few - a rose cutting that starts getting red leaves, when my pet responds to orders, when the chapati that I try to fry (no good at it) fluffs up!, when I am able to upload html content here on my profile page!, when I get connected on the phone after my umpteenth attempt, which means I smell success every moment of the day

That is wonderful, I too have felt that every little thing that brings joy and a sense of contentment to you is a success story and life is full of these little things that make us feel motivated and keep us in the right frame of mind to go forward...One need not have aim for super success in everything that one does...

To me, a success means when I achieved what I intended to have and to do. So for me there are many successes in my life, when I was able to graduate from college with good mark, when I was able to get a good job, when I can go overseas with my own money (not business trips), when I finally dated the guy I had been loving to from a far, etc. I am not so ambitious, either. I just go with the flow.

Hi maomao, thanks a lot for your response We no doubt have to struggle, compete and work hard to achieve anything in life.It is only the lucky few born with inherited wealth that can do without any of the hard work etc but have to work hard to keep the wealth to themselves lol...either way life is a struggle and a wise person gets happiness as you say through everyday achievements which though may seem small and inconsequential to others brings a lot of happiness and contentment to the person concerned...All the best and have a great day
