People that tattoo their pets - right or wrong?

Tatoo-a-pet - M.E.K.C. is an authorized agent for Tattoo-A-Pet (USA). They say tattooing your dog is painless, permanent and a safe identification procedure.

I've got this mail some days ago, and I can't stop thinking of it. The person who sent it to me said that he was out on a walk when he saw a dog with a tattoo. It was a mixed breed dog that had very upright ears, so it was easy to see the cartoonish dog tattooed on his ear. The guy was stunned and he asked the owner if it was a tattoo. The dog's owner confirmed that it really was a tattoo on his dog's ear. What do you think about owners that want to tattoo their pets? Do you think it is wrong to tattoo a pet, or are you okay with it? Have you ever seen such a thing?

our rescue greyhound had an id tatoo in his ear, but the process of that is a lot quicker than a normal tattoo. like with pigs, the numbers are set into a clamp, then it's no worse than ear peircing. probably not very nice for the dog, but over quickly. this has now become less common due to the availiability of micro-chipping. I'm not sure if they still tattoo racing dogs or not. but this serves a purpose. a picture tattoo involves a prolonged painful sensation throughout. as a human with tattoos, it doesn't bother me. but I know when I go in for a tattoo that I will be sitting through that feeling, which I quite enjoy. it's not fair to do it to an animal. they don't want a tattoo, they can't rationalise the sensation by expecting it or by thinking it's worth it for the final product. it's not right. it's cruel and unneccesary

I don't think there are any more places where those identification numbers are tattooed in dogs ears. At least in my coutry the only identification available is by microchips. Not only dogs can't say their oppinion about tattoos, but they don't feel any joy when they get a tattoo. Maybe humans feel something special when they get a tattoo, I don't know, I don't have one and I don't intend to have any. But a dog won't feel anything than pain. I totally agree with you: tattooing pets it's cruel and unnecesary.

Tattooing something like a cartoon dog? That's odd. The only time I've heard of tattooing animals was for identification purposes- normally an identification number of about eight digits. But, like, some sort of regular tattoo? I don't quite agree with it, but I don't know the amount of pain for the dog. I don't know... A cartoon dog is just odd. I know for ID purposes microchips have become much more common than tattooing.

I've heard of tattooing an identification number on dogs' ears. But this hasn't been so common since the microchips became popular. Some friends told me how they took their puppies to get their identification number, many ears ago. They said it was such a painfull operation! And tattooing the identification numer lasted only few seconds. But how long did it take to tattoo the cartoonish dog?

I've heard of Tattooing dogs for identification purposes. I haven't heard of tattooing them for fun.. I guess either way it serves as both. If the dog were to ever get away or be lost. That "designer" tattoo is certainly a means of identifying his dog.

I'm sure it is, but what's the price? It is sure that dogs suffer when they get their tattoo. If it was only for identification purposes, maybe I would understand. But tattooing your dog for fun... I don't find it normal.

Some peoples kids, I don't know why he did that. In our area, Wind., On. ca. they do the usual, 6 numbers and the first letters of the owners name ,first/ last. Ask me why, talk to all the reg. ed brats I ever owned. Believe me that is a lot. I have my own dogs; then i buy dogs . train them and sell them to responsible people...

I agree wih you, but when we talk about a small 8 figures number. But here we're talking about a cartoonish dog tattooed on a dog's ear! For God's sake, couldn't he tatoo a number instead of a picture???

I think its ok for dogs to get tattoo's but I am not sure why any one would want to get one on their dog but its their pet so its their choice. Also its like when people get their dogs ears cut,or tail cut.

thankfully ear cropping has been illegal in the UK for quite a long time now. and tail docking is very much becoming a thing of the past. it's no longer legal for cosmetic reasons. and with the easy availiability of micro chipping, you see less and less ID tattoos. the idea of cosmetic tattooing for dogs is just as abhorrent as mutilating their ears and tail.

Tattoo - what's this? Identification marks of identification, in any case to express the not a picture beauty? where else??? Always include some kind of tattoo time type (groups - political, social) But the dog and so different to the species, also true laws of nature. So beautiful woman or man of God, fully expressed and many like it. Why not understand eh enjoy - it tries to add. A dog who help blind or suffering. A dog of rescuers who does not really deserve the contempt of its natural beauty. None of us are not the same, not necessarily stand out differently. We are different, and is beautiful.

Dogs are beautiful the way God made them. They don't need tattoos to become more beautiful. People have other reasons than identification when they get themselves a tattoo...

Why put an animal through pain that it doesn't understand? I think that's dumb.

Yeah, I think 'dumb' is the right word to describe such a dog owner. I said they must be 'mad'. But 'dumb' suits better those people.

i think that that's animal cruelty. if it's done the same way humans get tattooed, it would hurt the dog an awful lot. at least when humans get tattoos, it's their choice but when dogs do, they don't have a say on it.

M.E.K.C., the authorized agent for tattoo-a-pet in USA said that tattooing a dog is painless. I'm just curious how can they say that, when everybody knows how a tattoo is made? Assuming that it is done under anesthesia, why would somebody put his dog under the risk of anesthesia just for fun? Dogs can't say their opinion about tattoos, but it's our obligation, as dog owners, to decide what's best for our pals. I'm pretty sure tattooing is more like useless.

I can't see why people would want to tattoo their pets. Maybe it's an identity thing. I would never do thatto a pet of mine. Animals look much better just the way they are.

You are right, animals look wonderfull just the way God made them. Yet, there are some un-painful and useful operation people do to their pets, such as trimming their coat. This not only make them look better, but it make them feel more confortable and keep them clean and healthy. Trimming is the only operation I find normal, others such as cropping ears, docking tails or tattooing are painfull and most of them useless.

Wow! Of course we must take care of our dogs, but to abuse them for no other use then... 'beauty'? You'll make tattoos to your children before they are able to choose if they want one or not?

I don't think that tattooing a pet is right to do at all it is like animal cruelty it's not fair to the animal at all. Wow though I am really surprise that some people would actually tattoo their dogs kind of makes you sad and want to cry that this is now going on and then it might turn into a fad and more people will start to do it and I don't like it one bit.

I don't like it either. But what should we do to stop them? Let's hope some laws will interdict this kind of procedures on pets, as all of us agreed that it is animal cruelty to make an artistic tattoo on a pet.

I've never seen such a thing and thats crazy?! who does that, the dog doesn't want a tattoo, omg the pain it must be in for something it didn't even ask for. It would break my heart to see this in person. How could someone do that, thats got to be abuse. . .it has to be. =(

At least I hope the tattoo is made with the dog under anesthesia, otherwise I can't imagine how painful can be for the poor animal. I understood even the identification tattoos that used to be made before identification by microchips was made under local anesthesia and yet it was painful.

Any dog is special in his way. No dog needs a tattoo in order to be special. I think only a mad mind might think that tattooing his dog makes the dog more atractive or something. Dogs are wonderful just the way God created them. They don't need fancy tattoos or trendy clothes to be who they are.

That's disgusting. I mean I have no problem with people tattooing themselves because that's their choice. In fact, I might even want to get a tattoo some day, but a dog can't say no. It can't tell you that it doesn't want one. It's just cruel.

I don't find odd when people decide to have a tattoo. It's their option and nobody should blame them for their decision. But a pet don't have any option. Nobody ask them if they want a tattoo. They just have to bear the pain, without understanding what happens to them.

I will kill people who tattoo their pets. It's just so so wrong!!! The tattoo process is already so painful on humans. Can you imagine the pain that the pets have to bear? Now, for god's sake, you don't tattoo your pet just because you like it. Don't your pet have feelings?

I don't want to imagine how much pain a dog has to bear. I sincerely hope the operation is done under anesthesia. Otherwise those people should be imprisoned for animal cruelty.

Unfortunately there are some people who think their dogs have the same needs as humans. I don't think a dog need or want a tattoo. But who ask them? Dogs have other ways of enjoying themselves, tattoos are not among them...

i'm against animal cruelty and all but it's all up to the owner. if he wants to get his pets some tats then we can't do anything about it. i just hope it doesn't hurt the poor guy. i've never seen nor heard anything like this before but i do wish there could be some laws that's against this. personally, if i could get my dogs some tats for free, i still won't do it. that's just wrong...

Me too I think tattooing a pet is animal cruelty. Even if it is done under anesthesia, it still hurts the animal afterwards. I think it's like the ear cropping and ear cropping has been forbiden by laws. Maybe nobody has thought about people who want to tattoo their pets, otherwise, there would be a law against it, too.
