I find it soo much easier to buy bulk pet food,as that way i know that my pets are never going to run out.I also look at the date when it is going to go out of date.At the moment i am able to store it in my shed, but soon i will not be able to,as we have got to clear the shed for other things.

Hi, It's interesting that I came across this question that you posted. Since my cat population has been steadily increasing for the last 4 years or so, I just started going bulk about 2 or 3 weeks ago. You are right. It is much easier. I just get a kick out of the fact that I come home with a whoooole bunch of cat food and supplies, but the next day when I eventually get my strength back from lugging all of that into the house, I manage to shop for maybe 1 or 2 small bags of things for myself. Oh, life is such a treat, isn't it?!?! I'd really have it no other way. My cats are my life.

It must be a bad week for pet talk on my behalf, as there have been several questions of this vein. We lost our beautiful little girl several years ago and have still not recovered. We noticed a change in her eating habits, bought a different diet, and in a few weeks she had liver failure. I know that guys are supposed to be able to handle this, but I can't say much more.

We lost one of our cats a few weeks ago and even though it is upsetting,i still have to think of all my other pets.My animals tend to like their dried food that i get them,i usually buy it by the sack load and get two different flavours of the dried food so that they get different flavours, rather than get bored of the same taste.

Of course you have to think of who is still around. A variety of dried food is great. Sorry, I had an attack of guilt. I guess you always do when you lose s for ledded friend.

cans i do sometimes.dry food, not so much. bugs tend to get it to it if you keep it too long, even if it's in a container. but i do love a good can sale, having 6 cats.

I would actually have preferred to buy the dry dog food in big sacks because you get to save money. The boyfriend is against it though because he says we don't know if the dog will still like to eat the same food a few weeks down the line. But guess what? he's been on the same food for a loooooong time already! hehe :)

Thankfully my cats, dogs, chicken and rabbit loves all the normal dried rood that we buy them,so we do tend to stock up,as it is soo much easier. However soon i will have to think of another place to put all their food,as i have to empty the shed where it is being stored.I can store alot of the dog food in another shed aswell as on the upstair bit of the dog run,but it is all the other pets food.At this rate i will have to get down to hardly no food,as there is no where else i can think to store it all.

My local grocery store carries bulk food. When pet food companies ship their big bags of food, some damage occurs to some of the packages. The store dumps the food out of these damaged packages into a bin and we can scoop out the amount we want and they charge a per pound rate that is lower than any pre-packaged food price. I always buy this bulk food for the savings I get and my cats like the variety.

Wow! That's really cool of the store. I'm sure your cats really love it, too.

I live out in the bush, miles from anywhere so it is prudent for me to buy pet food in bulk. I used to try and vary the flavours but that didn't work out too well. I've found that it's better to pay a bit more for good quality food, then they are sure to eat it. Last time I bought cat food, all they had was a huge bag so my cat has and will be having the same thing for a few months. So far, so good, it's been several weeks and he's still scoffing it down. For the dogs, I would buy large bags from the supermarket and the dogs were happy with it but Lucy would sometimes become incredibly skinny. A few months ago, I was at the farm store and all they had for non working dogs was this particular whole food so I took some home. All the dogs loved it straight away even though it says to wean them onto it gradually ...lol. They also get wet food comprising meat, cereal and veggies that I make in a big pot, every week. I can't believe how much better Lucy looks on this new dry food. She's a different dog. Just goes to show that supermarket brands are not necessarily good for dogs.

Yes and no. I buy bulk pet food, but I don't stock up. I just buy what I need when I need it and and when I get low I go out and buy some more. That way my pets food has a better chance of always being fresh. Not to mention it's easier on my wallet! LOL Happy mylotting!

I buy cat food where meat is the primary ingredient, and meat additives are way down on the list or or not there at all. I buy the larger packages to save a little money, but that isn't quite the same as "in bulk"...

We have only one pet, a cat. There is only so much that he can actually eat. Although he constantly tells me otherwise. I do buy his food in 20 lb. bags. Since just one of those bags costs $50., I can buy only one bag at a time. No, there is no gold or diamonds hidden in those bags, just prescription cat food.

My dog is very small, so if I bought pet food in bulk, it would take him forever to eat it. I am always afraid of his food expiring because he eats so little. I only buy a bag at a time. It takes him about a month to eat a small bag.

We have cats and they get tired of eating the same thing all the time, so we have to switch out the food we give them. There's no way we could buy in bulk.

Growing up, I remember my dad coming home with a huge bag of dog food. My brother would complain about having to take it off the back of the truck, and carry it to the shed in the back yard. It was funny, because that bag lasted a long enough time for his back to recover from the pain involved with having to carry/drag it. I grew up in a house full of complainers. They all wonder where I got it from.

With 7 cats, buying in bulk is the only way go. I buy online and get a months supply of dry and tinned food delivered to my door. Since I don't have a car, There's no other practical option.

I often buy pet food for my pets. Here in our country, middle level of life, people give food for their pets comes from left over foods. They are not particular that it has to be a pet food like whiskas etc. That is why our dogs here and even the cats are not the ideal cats that are found in other country like yours. The size of my pets are a lot of smaller than the usual grown up pets. Well according to you, you take note of the expiration date, that was good. Just in case you are aware that expired foods is never good to be eaten by your pets.

I buy big bags of Dog food and cat food.. it is so much cheaper. I buy 40 lb bags (or larger) of dog food- but with my dogs this lasts about 2 weeks. And 20 (actually they have been shrinking) I mean 16 or so lbs of cat food. I wish this came in bigger bags. The cat food lasts me a week. So I pay approximately $80 or slightly more a month on their dry food. Then I buy treats.. they cost more than the dog food sometimes. And periodically I have to buy canned cat food to aid in giving cats medicine. :-) That can get pretty expensive.

i wouldn't do that as my pet changes his taste from one food to another. in any worse scenario, it's good that she will eat plate food, though. if you're sure that he is consistent with what your pet wants to eat, then go for it. you can save a lot in buying a whole sack

Well I think my answer will be different from everybody else who respond to this discussion. I have a dog it's shitzu, I have many rabbits, guinea pig and hamster. I don't buy food in big bulk because my vet said it's not good to stock up foods that your pets wasn't able to eat in 1 week time. There is a chance that this kinds of feeds will loose it's taste and nutrition values. And I want my dog to try different flavors of dog foods not just stick to one. My guinea pig and rabbit don't eat just feeds alone, but I also give them vegetables and grasses. and my hamsters eat a small amount so I just prefer to buy an amount that they can eat for a week. And after all the pets store is a few blocks away from my place so it's ok for me.

I wish I could buy the big bags for my cat but I often have to switch between dry food and canned food because my cat has a very sensitive stomach. Before we got him, the people that had him as a kitten fed him chocolate all the time. In high doses it is toxic to a cat. When we found him he had a high fever and was very ill. He tried to crawl under our couch to die. I was able to check his temperature and it was 107 when a cat's normal temperature is only 101. We found a vet that would take payments and took him for an emergency visit. He was treated with antibiotics and given three bags of IVs. We can not buy dad's cat food at all for him, because he throws up and breaks out from it. He can not have any cat food with red color in it because it makes him sick so we have to stick to natural cat foods and whiskas which he can tolerate. Anything else makes him sick. When he starts throwing up, we have to hold his food for several hours and just give water to allow his stomach to settle down then when he can go back to eating he has to start on canned chicken and rice then gradually go back to dry cat food. Poor kitty doesn't understand when we are holding his food that we are doing it to help him.
