handshake etiquette for todays'interview

i have always been made aware that a firm handshake gets an interview off to a good start but sometimes feel funny about shaking another womans hand as i am not sure if a smile or pleasant 'hello' is more appropriate than offering my sword arm.is there official etiquette for such a situation?

I don't think it matters what gender your interviewer is. A firm handshake is still proper etiquette for beginning and ending a job interview. You can shake hands with a man or a woman. It would be a courteous thing to do.

I don't know. I have to say it depends on the situation. Are you applying for formal or more causal jobs? I notice when I am applying for more professional jobs, a handshake seems required. However, when I am applying for more causal, or part time work, a handshake doesn't seem require. Good luck on your job search. I'm still searching myself.
