make. Have you ever worn a bolo tie? It's a tie that has a cord (usually, but I've had some with a scarf), a slide and some tips on the ends of the cords so the slide doesn't come off. The slide is usually metal and can have precious stones, gems, wood, silver, gold, peuter, femo, etc. and can be decorated in a variety of ways, carved, embossed, wood burned, etc. The cord can be leather, vinyl, horse hair, almost anything a really strong cord that can withstand having a slide go up and down on it can be made of. The tips can be almost any kind of metal-maybe even some other materials, but they've all been metal that I've seen. Have you ever made a bolo tie? Do you call it a bolo or a bola where you are? Where I am, some women wear them, too. Have you made them for yourself, friends, family, or to sell?
My family likes them better than regular ties. Many people have short-wide necks in my family and some people have thyroid problems, breathing problems or other reasons why a regular tie bothers them, but bolos don't.

hi writersedge I remember seeing one bolo tie that had a scorpion embeded in plastic on it and that sort of creeped me out but others are really ' unique and some are really quite pretty but i have never seen a woman'
wear them so expect this is only for t he guys. Iwould liked to see one
made with turquoise as I just love the color and the stone too.I have a short wide neck too. I am a woman senior citizen but did not know that
women can wear them too. I am not very artsy crafty so have never made a bolo tie.

When I was in Western Style Square Dancing and wore peasant tops, I didn't wear a bolo tie. But after I married my husband and we wore matching shirts, I did wear one. Instead of the cords that men wear, mine had a powder blue scarf. The slide was a couple of square dancers dancing and there were no tips. The dancers were silver and had the skirt fanning out. Often when a woman wears one, it has a more feminine theme such as cloisonne flowers, etc. When I typed in bolo ties, I saw some beautiful ones. Did you know the bolo tie is the Official State tie of AZ? Turquoise ones are very popular as are Tiger Eye and many animal ones. Black onyz horse with Mother-of-Pearl background is really beautiful. I saw some carved characatures of cowboys that were neat, bet a characature of a cowgirl could be made, too.
On ebay, I found a bolo tie set that was all done-up except for what you glue onto the slide. Like whatever you want for a stone, shell, etc. For anything heavy, you would probably need to add jewelry glue to the back before putting it on. So for a cheap one, that would be easy for enough those of us who are not as crafty as others. That way a person could "ease" into it and learn how to do the other parts as time goes on like open and sand the slide in the back, thread the cords through, and add the tips at the base. The scarf I had didn't have any tips, but when I would take it off, I had to rethread it back on to wear it again. The tipes keep you from taking the entire slide off. Also when you don't use a set you can choose Satin cords, leather, vinyl (which the kit probably has), or horse hair as well as probably others that I haven't seen yet. You can choose your slides and they could be any jewelry metal (silver, gold, peuter), bone, femo, etc.
I bet if you search women's bolo ties or bolo ties for women, you'll get some beautiful stuff to come up on your screen.

tipes should be tips and premade set instead of set.

its great that you've found a solution to your tie problem opposed to reg. ties you wear bolo, i love finding solutions to my problems too and i know it sounds weird duh everyone loves finding solutions to their problems. I just mean that sense of euphoria you get once you find something that works soo well for you, its awesome.

Actually, not everybody does. I have a friend who freaks out and worries about everything. Every time she has a problem, she almost becomes hysterical. I keep drilling into her brain, "every problem has a solution. Just calm down and figure out the solution." She's getting better. The other day, she called up and told me that she had found a solution to a problem. She's not at the euphoria stage yet, but she's not freaking out or going hysterical. It's taken a lot of patience to hand out with her. But she's learning and things are getting better. Some day, she will be very proud and euphorically happy. I'm waiting for the day she sounds like you. You sould really neat. Thanks for responding and take care.

So glad to see you back, friend. I may have worn them when I was very young, just for fun. My mother's family was strong on Western influence. My current husband would like that better than any other kind of tie. I have seen some scarves, but did not really match those up with bolos.

The scarves with the slides? I had one of those. But without the tips, I had to keep rethreading the dang thing after I took it off. It's amazing all the different materials that a bolo tie can be made with and all the different end results. See my response to #8 below. Take care and Yes, I'm glad I'm back, too. But it will be more limited from now on.

I've been reading up on them. There have been some ehows on how to make a bolo tie. It doesn't sound too hard. I might. It sounds like the supplies are few, only 4 variables, and like I might be able to do it. My brothers, my husband, and even I like bolo ties.
Nice to hear from you and to be back.

I think I know what you mean, but didn't know they had a name..If they are what I think, my dad would wear them all the time. My husband rarely wears a tie and when he does, he wears the "old fashioned tie it yourself" tie..
I have never learned how to tie a tie, so I guess these are good, or you can get a clip on like I got my son..

A bolo is also called a Western Wear tie or a Western Style square dance tie. It has sometime nice looking on a slide that slides down a cord that is bent in half. There are tips at the bottom to keep the slide from sliding off. If you type in any of the following, you'll know what I mean:
bolo ties
western wear ties
western style square dance ties
The neat thing is that you never tie them. You slide them. Slide down, goes over your head, put around/under the collar and slide the design back up.

Hi, Edge!
I have made them, when I used to make all sorts of custom jewelry. If you request catalogs from companies that provide semi-precious stones and jewelry findings, they usually have what you need to make them. They're really easy, and they can be really gorgeous. If there's a rock shop in your area, you're sure to see everything you need there. I don't mean rock music; I mean polished rocks used in jewelry.

I help out in a place like that, but she doesn't have slides or tips. She has satin cording and lots of polished rocks. I tried to talk to her about bolo ties. She didn't know what I meant. Later on, she said she had been a square dancer. If she was an Eastern Style dancer, she still won't know what I mean if I say a Western Square Dance ties. But if she did Western, she may know what I mean. I saw some of the bolo ties cross labeled Western wear ties and Western Style Square Dance ties.
But actually ebay has everything. I searched there. The problem is, unless it's brand new, you don't know what condition some of the stuff is in and sometimes the pictures are representative and some aren't.

Yup! A Texan is definitely in bolo country. All the kinds I've seen are in response #8 if you dare (ha, ha, ha).

I also listed some I've heard about like bone. I think stone inlay work and carved are fantastic.
