...like messing up your bowels if you eat too many of them! That's just happened to me. At first, I wasn't aware what the liquorice sweets were doing to me until I had about the 6th one of the day and I suddenly HAD to go to the toilet. You can guess the rest. I feel much better now. Have you ever eaten something really yummy, only to regret it later in the "bowels" department?

Hello, Janey. I love liquorice, but I know when enough is enough - unlike my husband, who ate a whole packet of liquorice allsorts yesterday, apart from the 3 coconut rounds I grabbed. He spent most of the evening praying for a lump, if you get my drift. Luckily we live in an apartment - he'd never have made the stairs in time. I do find that since I hit 50, when I've gotta go, I've gotta go. I can't say particular foods bring it on though. Then again, I don't tend to pig out on one particular food. I like a variety of tastes.

Certain things do this to hubby more so than me. I once stole some chocolate exlax when I was at my grandparents when I was a kid. Talk about cramps, I had them. Back then they had an outhouse, not an indoor toilet. Did not do that again.

Oh dear, that doesn't sound like fun, no wonder you didn't do that again. I've been good today, only had a couple of the liquorice sweets. They seem to be "reproducing" in the tin, I just can't get rid of them!

Licorice, if it really licorice, is a legume - and, like all legumes, it tends to run right thru ya...

I am one of those fortunate ones who can eat Liquorice all day long without it having any adverse effects, whilst the rest of the familly suffer when they eat too much. In fact Liquorice is my choice of snack whilst I am working, especially the natural sticks rather than the plasticy mass produced commercial stuff. As for tummy troubling food, my weakness is cheese I absolutely adore it yet thanks to a dairy/lactose intollerance it always causes me dire issues . I've even tried those special cheese for those with dairy/ lactose issues but it doesn't taste so good, so I just suffer the consequences when I just have to have some cheese .

I don't blame you for eating "proper" cheese lol. My Mum has Irritable Bowel Syndrome so she "should" watch what she eats but doesn't! I dread to think what my liquorice sweets would do to her! Where do you get your sticks from? I used to love them from the local chemist in Blackpool but I haven't seen them for years. Do they sell them in Health Food Shops nowadays?

I used to love eating sticks of licorice as a kid. Never had any problems. Here are some interesting uses of this strange plant extract. Makes a foaming agent, mixed with water, used by fire departments for fighting oil or aircraft fires. Used to disguise the taste of dried beets fed to cows in winter. (Cows love the taste!) To really mess up your bowels, eat fresh ripe figs. You just can't stop eating them, or...

My brother LOVES those fig biscuits. Not sure if he eats them now but he was the only one who would eat them when younger. I hated the damn things lol. I've also eaten liquorice sticks..they used to sell them in the local chemists! I had no idea about the foaming agent thingy. I've learned something else on MyLot so thanks for that.
