Should the pet owner really leash their dogs

I was driving my car home tonight from work, and all of the sudden, a dog was running across the street, and I have to step my brake suddenly. The cars right behind me was honking fiercely. For a moment, my heart was losing beat, and I don't want to be an animal killer for sure. Shouldn't those pet owners leash their dogs or something. If I accidentally kill their animal, I felt bad myself too. I just hope that they can take their animal in without letting go outside.

Well there is a leash law around here. So if people do not have a leash on their dogs, then they would get in a lot of trouble. Really, it is just common sense. No matter how well trained you think your pet is, they could do something that you would regret. Whether it hurts your pet or your pet hurts someone else, it could all be avoided by putting a leash on the pet. What if your dog bites a kid? If that happens, you could be liable. You might get sued. The court might order your dog to be put to sleep. All of this could be avoided by putting a leash on your dog. It is something simple and it will save a lot of headaches. Therefore, keep a leash on your pet. It will remain with you for many years to come.

This incident also happened to my dog when she was still a puppy! We did leash her but for some bizarre reason, when we opened the gates to our house, she was able to forcibly removed the collar from her neck and ran out to the street where a car almost ran her over.Luckily, she wasn't hit but she was severely traumatized by it and wouldn't go out anymore. Today, we don't leash our dogs anymore but we do place a fence around them to keep them from running out to the street whenever we open the gates.

Yes owners should really keep their dogs on a leash when outside or get a fenced in yard so the dog can run free. It is dangerous for many reasons to have a loose dog. One of our neighbors lets their little dog outside with out a leash and the dog often wanonders over to my yard. One day I was out walking my dog who is a 57 pound German Shepherd. My dog was on a leash, but that little dog happened to be out, that stupid little dog that probaby weighs 10 maybe 15 pounds came bolting at my much bigger dog and attacked her. My dog could have swallowed that dog in one bit (Ok maybe two), When that dog attacked my dog I could almost not control my dog I was holding on to her leash with all my might to keep her from killing that little dog. Finally my dog gave te little dog a good wack with her big paw and the little dog ran off, but my dog could have easily killed that little dog if she had wanted to. Not very smart, I have also seen that same little dog run out in to the middle of the street. She almost got hit once, but I saw it about to happen and I screamed really loud and the driver stopped their car. People really need to learn to be more responsible with their pets.

Hi kingparker, Yes, pet owner should definitely have their dogs on leashes. Unfortunately, some dog owners should not have dogs because they don't take care of them the way that they are suppose to. They allow them to roam the neighborhood without being on a leash nor do they have name tags, just in case they get lost or hurt. I can only imagine how you would have felt if you had hit the dog. I would just have hope that you would have been able to find the owner. Sometime though, these are just stray dogs running loose in the neighborhood until the animal control is called to capture them and take them to the dog pound to be adopted or euthanized because they were in such poor health.. I think it take a responsible person to be a pet owner. Pets need special care, so if a person cannot give this care to the animal they should just not have one.

Yes pet owners should definitely put their pets on leashes. Many dogs get ran over and die because of irresponsible owners. The other day my mom accidently ran over a small dog that belonged to one of our neighbors. Luckily though the dog didn't die. But I have seem many other situations where dogs have gotten ran over by cars because they're owners don't out them on leashes. Another reason why pet owners should put their dogs on leashes is because they cannot only bring harm to themselves but harm to others. One of my friends had been bitten by a dog who was off it's leash. She showed me the scars on her leg and they were horrible. Her whole leg looked deformed from the dog's bite marks. She also had to get many stitches. But anyways pet owners should keep their dogs secure with a leash and I'm glad you didn't run over the dog that ran across in front of your car. You shouldn't have minded all the other cars behind you. They can;t do anything to you especially when you have a good reason to stop.

I do not see a need for pet owners to lash their pets.

This is a picture of an angry DOG - This picture shows how vicious dogs can appear. Actually this is a friendly dog, irritated by its owner, who wanted to take an "aggressive" snap.
Dear Kingparker, As a child, I used to love dogs. I once petted an army Major's dog; it clamped its mouth on my head and slightly ripped my right ear (2 inches). It had a sore on the nose I had not noticed. I recently read an issue of (old) Reader's Digest in which two American Pit Bull Terriers attacked 4 unsuspecting people and mauled them terribly. Their owner had left them unchained at home and had forgotten to latch the a window. They simply leaped out and started their "onslaught" on people. When a victim managed to chase one, the other would appear from the other side; both attacked people cunningly in tandem. This was 5 - 6 years ago in the US. However, coming back to the nub of the discussion, definitely all dogs should be leashed by their owners if they are not at home or if they take them for a walk. I hope you wouldn't have to accidentally kill someone's animal! I too feel like that sometimes! All the best. Here's a Picture for you. Sincerely, suryachalla PS: Here's the mug of an unpleasant canine.

Hi, kingparker. I think that the pet owners should make sure that their dog is on a leash. Some dogs can get a loose while they are outside. And then some dogs are stray dogs. I have seen many animals run out in front of a car. Other animals walk so slow until you can't see them until it is too late. All dogs should be kept firmly on a leash that is firm.

hello parker, I agree with you there. i have a female dog, i was happy when she was young and free. but as she grows up, she tends to destroy a lot of plants and other stuff. the one it was given to us likes to wreckon things so, from then on i always put on a leash with her because she's just too much. but she's lovely and cuddly dog.]

Hi kingparker, Of course pet owners should be really responsible for their pets. What if you accidentally unable to hit your break and killed the dog? If would be your fault and not theirs. I for one am not walking near any dog because I don't know they might bite me. So pet owners should leash their dog when taking a walk.

Hello kingparker! I really admire you for thinking that way. Some people would not mind the dogs or cats if they run at them. I would have to suggest to the pet owners that if they leash their dogs, they should still be guarding them off. i suggest that they walk their dogs with collars and in chains so that they will still have a hold of them if they go to the parks and the streets. They should do this once in a while so that these dogs would still be able to have a glimpse of the surroundings and be able to know that they are still free. My two cute dogs are leashed inside my house so that they can still roam. i sometimes let them free opening my doors at night so that they will have time to play on the streets. But it is safe because we live in a secured subdivision. I make sure that no people are already roaming if i let them out as well. Have a nice day and thank you for this nice topic.

Yes, pet owners should put leashes on their dogs because it is the best way to keep their pet safe. A leash will also prevent events from happening like the one that happened to you.
