If You Ever Won a Big Lottory Would You Tell Anyone?

United States

My hubby and I disagree on this, he says he would not want to tell anyone that we won a big one, just that we won a couple hundred thousands. I say it would be like lying to our friends and family. I would by choosy about who I did tell but those closest to us now I don't think I could keep it a secret. Who would you tell, if anyone? We play the lottery twice a week so I'm hoping that one day we have to decide for real who to let know.

Of course I would tell it to my family and immediate relatives ( good thing we only have a few :) ). I'll also tell my friends, but I'll treat them first before telling them. :)

I think if it was a big lottery like the powerball or some super big amount that most people would know anyway, media coverage. friends and family would probably know because your lifestyle will probably change - you know a new car, vacations, etc. I kinda understand why your husband might feel this way - maybe not wanting everyone to bug him about money or charities calling him. Some family and friends might feel you would "owe" them some of the money since you won so big so that might be the problem. I would be like you and just share the info with family and friends and would not have to announce it to like co-workers, and others. We play twice a week as well but never won any more than $200.00 and that was about a year ago. I know others who have won really big prizes and I am so ready for it to be me. Best of luck to you and hope you win big someday soon.

No, i think your husbands smart by not telling anybody. It would be wise not to tell anybody and get an lawyer if you won the lottery. The reason for this is there's a good chance people could be coming out and suing you for no reason. The only reason they would be suing is because of all the money you won. Also you could have family you never even met(like they truly care)coming out trying to be your friend just for the money you won. i wouldn't trust anybody to keep it a secret. all it takes is one slip up and then everybody knows.

Hi, If I have the luck to win a big Lottery(big amount),of course, I will share this good news with my husband and my son, not to forget with my family members. I will treat them eat at restaurant, give some cash to my parents, buy presents for my siblings,my husband and my son, give some to charity and keep the rest of the money for investment and for emergency used. Of course, it does not mean I have to tell all my friends about this Good news....don't over proud over this good news. and it is best to control the money wisely ,or else, it will be gone in very short period of time.

I agree with your husband though I don’t know what his reasons are. Mine would be fear or attracting unwelcome people into my life or even endangering the lives of my immediate family members. Just a few thousands wont make any difference to me so I wont even mention them to anyone while if I won anything big, I’d keep it to myself. Money attracts people and if you don’t feel like giving in to all their expectations, you overnight turn into a miser! Also, crime and kidnapping is ever on the rise and these things (like coming into a lot of money, suddenly) spread like wildfire (people gossip even if they don’t mean any harm)…so I wouldn’t want any such attention on my family.

I would keep silent. I'd tell my mom and sis and my kids of course, but that's it. Did you hear about that guy that won and suddenly everyone was his friend? Then two people decided to kill him and bury him in his own yard, and take the money.

It's been awhile now, think it was in Georgia...I had a good friend in HS that when she turned 18 would be receiving 1/2 a million dollars-both her and her brother each..so suddenly at 18-everyone was her best friend..in under a year she was broke. I can't believe people!

You won't be able to keep it a secret for too long. Even if you just told a few close friends or family, it will surely find its way to other people. Specially the ones that you don't like to know. So, if you ever had to make that decision, I hope you go with your husband and not tell a single soul!

Nope, I don't and why should I? I won't tell anyone about my this kind of big fish that i caught. I will just keep it secret. I will give some amount of money to my family. And I will create a business that I use as a front liner if ever they ask me where I get the money that i gave. When it comes to money, we don't know who our friends are. We should be careful about it. Just help those people who need it. i will share my luck but nobody will know where I got it.

I think about this all of the time. My family and friends would know because I would automatically be gifting them a portion. However I have always know who my friends are and what family members have been there for me. So other people that would come crawling out of the closet does not really worry me. I am pretty strong in what it takes to be a friend and if you were not that already, me winning the lottery, is not going to change that for me. I dream of winning also and play each week. I know a lot of people say things like this and don't really mean it but I would also help some of my friends on mylot as well.

to be honest ,i would not tell anyone .now in our country ,the society is complex and disorder ,a lot of people do not have jobs ,no money for them to support life and other things ,some of them just take crime ,so it is dangerous for me to tell other people ,i just won a big lottory ,maybe different country has different background.. but if i won a lottery ,i will give some of the money for charity , it is necessary and useful ,maybe can help others to pass the suffer... i hope that one day i can get a lottery ,altough i buy lottery not very often,ha

I think I would be careful who I told as well. We have always agreed though that we would share with certain family members and certain friends. If we won a really big one we would probably keep half of what we get after taxes and then split the other half up between close family and friends. We live happily with what we have now so having just half of a big win would be more than enough for us. I believe if you do win a big one and you are a single winner you are required to do interviews.

Hi kittenclaus, I think when you win a big lottery amount you don't have any options, they announce winners in the media. So, if you choose not to tell your family and friends and they find out later from the media, it would be very uncomfortable for all parties. I do think I would tell my close family and friends, especially those who I think would be happy for me and don't feel that I should share with them if I choose not to. I am hope one day that the prize parole from Publisher Clearinghouse will ring my doorbell. Believe me I wouldn't care if the entire country knew of my winnings. They probably will know because of the huge television celebration that will take place. I don't play the lottery very often because of the lack of funds, but I do the Publishers because it is free to enter.

hmmm.., i would prefer secrecy.., I won't consider it lying if you don't spill a word.., but telling a story other that the truth would be lying.., If a close family will ask.. I will be truthful about it.., But if nobody asks.., I wouldn't say a word.., But my reason is not a selfish one.., I will definitely share my blessing to them.. I just don't want to risk any robbers knowing that we won.. hahaha..=)

In my opinion, i will not tell anyone about this, except my closest family and wife, but the problem is that the lottery company has the right to publish your picture and your name in case you result a winner. And they have the right to put it in the newspaper, tv.

If I ever won, I would tell no one. I even tell them not to put my name on newspapers, in news channels, and internet. You can't really trust anyone. In my local news, a guy won the big one and he basically told his family and friends. Few days later, he was murdered by one of his friends just cause he wanted the money. So I wouldn't tell anyone.
