When it's time to get another dog, I know which kind I want to get.

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about when I get another dog. I currently have a 9 year old yellow lab. I'm not planning on replacing him, but the house will sure feel empty when he's gone, and I'd rather have another animal in my house. I see many dogs when I'm out working, and I always thought about breed I'd get when it was time to get another dog. I love large breed dogs, more to love I always say. My favorites are labs, rotties, sheppards and now the Burmese Mountain Dog. I find the latter to be such a beautiful dog. So, when it's time to get another dog, I am hoping to get a Burmese Mountain Dog. When I took my dog for a walk earlier, I saw one in a car, staring out the window at us and that's when I decided for good that I wanted one. I'd never seen one until a few years ago, and fell in love with the breed right away. Do you think that the dog would be a good one to have? I'm going to research the breed further to see if my choice is a good one.

Burmese Mountain Dogs are great. My aunt was a very dedicated and caring breeder of these dogs when I was a kid. While I didn't spend too much time at her house, I remember the dogs well. They are definitely in the 'big breed' category, though. Be sure that you are ready to deal with the shedding and the drooling. They are amazing dogs, though. Good luck in your search and research!

Thanks for the reply. After doing some searching, I realized there is that breed and the Burnese Mountain dog, the latter is the one I was interested in. I've seen quite a few of them here, never realized what breed they were. They both seem to be neat dogs, but I like the tri colored one.

It is actually the Bernese Mountain Dog that I am talking about, too. I could never remember whether it was an 'm' or an 'n' and didn't realize until now that the both spellings were applicable to separate breeds. I find it interesting that, after looking further into the difference, 'Burmese' seems to apply to two completely different breeds - one looking somewhat like the tri-color 'Burnese' and the other looking like a German Shepard Dog. Also, one reference states that the Burmese was bred to hunt skunks while another says that they were bred to guard temples. After seeing this discrepancy, I looked on the site justdogbreeds.com and I didn't even see the Burmese Mountain Dog listed. The breed my aunt had was definitely the Burnese Mountain Dog, the tri-color dog that more closely resembles the St. Bernard, Great Pyrenees, and Newfoundland dogs. My most recent experience with the Burnese Mountain Dog was in a park in Boston a couple of months ago. There was a family in the park that had three of these amazing dogs. One of them was absolutely gigantic!

Sorry, I have to correct my own misspelling above. I had a German Shepherd Dog when I was a kid and another that was mixed with a border collie later on. I spelled it wrong in the above reply as 'shepard.' I didn't mean to disrespect this fantastic breed of dog by spelling its name incorrectly. Baron was 3 when I was born and he lived until I was 10 - 13 years for a German Shepherd is a really long time and he was absolutely amazing.

I imagine that you are talking about Bernese Mountain Dog. If so, they are really great dogs. A friend of mine has one, and he's such a delight to see! The shedding problem is not worse than the one of a lab. If you comb his coat at a regular basis, you won't see too much hair around. But the drooling problem might disgust you, they really drool a lot. My friend's Berenese , Freud, is such a sweet giant! He is so gentil with his little master (the child is only 4 years old) I think I could watch them for hours when they play together! I love this breed too, I even wanted to get a Bernese girl after Nera had to go. But I changed my mind when I found out how low is their life expectancy.

Oh, my mistake! I've done some research and I've found out there is a breed named "Burmese Mountain Dog". I didn't know that, I'm sorry for the confusion I created. Yet I'm not so sure how a Burmese looks like. I found two different sites which seem to have some authority in this matter, but the two of them present such different dogs! One says that a Burmese can be mistaken by a German Shepherd, and the other says a Burmese can be mistaken by a Bernese (the mistake I made earlyer) Just check these two sites: http://www.burmesemountaindog.org hhtp://www.burmesemountaindog.info How does a Burmese looks like, after all?

Oh, I don't know this breed, is it the one that looks a bit like a St Bernhard, but with different colors? A very big one? I am also thinking of what dog to get next, but I am hoping I can get it when my current dog is still alive, I just need to get a bigger place first!
