I have experienced beggars and thiefs who were trying to scam me in different ways, taxi drivers who have ripped me off, sights and attractions with "tourist prices" (written in English) and "non-tourist prices" (prices written with letters in the local language so that the tourists don't understand) and things like that.
When I was in Prague I once caught a taxi on a famous square. I always ask about the price before we start, but I didn't know the local prices and I wasn't aware that it far too expensive. Later that night I read a note in my guidebook: "Whatever you do, don't catch a taxi on that square, because they are bound to rip you off, and it is a known as the tourist trap". Ooops, guess I should have read the guidebook more carefully

No scamming but just ordinary beggars in Berlin. Those East-European manipulators, you know what I mean? They come annoying you 100 times with their hired children and prams until you get so crazy that you dump a dime. Really they should be arrested and brought back to their country despite of any bad financial situation or something.

I have met beggars like that. I don't know if they were from Eastern Europe or from somewhere else, but they were extremely persistent. I hate it when beggars don't give up and keep on following me around. I have also met beggar who were very greedy and instead of saying "Thanks", they said: "I need more!"...

In a poor country there might be expensive prices for the tourists and cheap prices for the local people. I read that in the Maldives plenty of the local people live on a dollar a day. The hotels on resort islands cost $70 to $150 a night budget and upwards to many hundreds of dollar each night. I visited the Maldives on a last minute flight. I went there because my booked flight to Mexico was canceled due to a hurricane. I think the boat trip fare to the island in a rip off. It is $150 one way. Accommodation was really expensive and that was the budget end of the market. On my travels I am sure in many different countries I have been ripped off by taxi drivers. For example I went over the border from Israel into Jordan and it was an expensive taxi ride into town. They told me in was a public holiday and there weren't any buses. I don't think that was true. When I was traveling in Poland I had it written down 'a second class train ticket to ...' but I was always provided with a first class ticket. Yes, reading the guide book is important. I didn't read about the danger of malaria in the part of Indonesia that I visited. I passed through a region and then read about the danger. I am pleased to say I didn't catch malaria.

Sometimes taxidrivers and other people will lie about things to earn more money. I have experienced that as well. I was told by a taxidriver that my hotel was closed, and he recommended a another hotel which happened to be much more expensive. I am sure that the taxidriver would have gotten money if he had managed to convince me to stay at that hotel. I didn't experience the same thing as you when I was in Poland, but I had a lot of problems when I wanted to buy tickets, because the staff didn't speak English or German and I only knew a few words in Polish. It is good to hear that you didn't get malaria in Indonesia.
