Will the rapid advance of technology, we can enjoy supreme quality of movie at home as we watch them in our nearest movie theaters. We do have big screen TV now as oppose to 10 years ago; high quality surrounded sound system; and availability of those online movies from Netflix and similar service. Also, 3D is available in Television already, and predicted to be widely used in the near future. So, with all these equipment available, there are might be a significant decline in number of people going to movie theaters, don't you think?

Yes, I think the number of people who go to cinema will decline in future. Actually this is already happening. Although it seems it is nice to watch a movie in the cinema. However, the ticket price is also very expensive. We can't go there all the time because it can be a big amount, especially for a whole family. This is why today I seldom go to the cinema unless the movie is really worth to it. I love China

I dont think so. even if there are piracy, even if there are dvds for sale.. people would still want to go to the cinemas and experience the "feeling" of watching the great movies in cinema, with 3d, with surround sound. we have to admit that not all people can afford to buy 3d ready tvs, and not all have a complete package or a mini theater at home... but even so they would still be going to the cinemas and watch there with the rest of the people. he he :) nothing beats a true cinema experience...;)

But when you come to think about it. If you want big screen to watch your movies, you can either have a big screen TV, and a projector to project the image as big as you desired. About the surrounding sound system, it is always available in the market right now. What else experience do you want. The rip - off popcorn and beverage from the movie theaters?

I'm with chiyosan on this one. It is the total "experience" that is the draw card for cinema goers today.

I honestly doubt this will happen, they'll push for ways to attract people and you can't beat going to the cinema and although I would love to see people to control those who make noise. (as we don't have hushes) People will flock to any good cinema, you should see the one here in nottingham you still get those old massive lines of ques that go far and far. Illegal downloading as killed it off, so I don't anything else will and with the fact that "movies" need the income first, I doubt will see any end to it. Think about it they won't get x amount of cash before we buy the dvd.

I still love going to the movies. I'm not really a fan of watching movies at home. I would watch DVD or watch movies through HBO, Showtime and any other premium channels (if I subscribe to them) if there is an interesting documentary and movies that I have no interest in paying more. There are also interesting movies that are never shown on theaters depending on where you live, which you have to catch them on DVD or online. I don't think the advanced technology of home viewing will ever replace cinematic technology. There will still be lots of people appreciate bigger screen and spectacular sound effects of a cinema. I also think cinemas are going to get more sophisticated in the future.

I know that in the future, it will decline if they will not lower the fee hahahaha... But as we all know that technology is too fast now so I know that people will just watch it in their houses. It's so very convenient in the house and it's not even expensive!

T.V. vs The Cinema is a old rivalry. When television started the movie siuts were so scared but movies survived. I think movies will survive and their numbers will remain the same if and only if they keep making both movies with special effects for the techies and movies with great storylines for fans of a good story.

Hey kingparker! I think that people have already stopped going to the movies, at least here where I live! Movies are just so ridiculously expensive that it doesn't make any sense to go to the theatres anymore. The movies end up going to DVD within a few months after they hit the theatres anyway! I just wait until they come out in DVD for a few months and my boyfriend rents them and we prefer watching them from home anyway! It is more comfortable and we can "stop" the movie if we want to get a "snack"!

I believe movie theatre attendance declined when DVDs came in and in my country going to the movies was quite expensive although these days prices have come down a little and with the introduction of luxury cinemas where large chairs can be tilted back along with food and drinks served it makes watching a movie a truly luxurious experience and I think people will still want to go!

I don't think the numbers of people going to the movie theatre will decline at all, actually, I think the numbers will continue to rise. People thought that the movie theatres would be gone back in the 1950s-1960s, because of the ride of people having televisions at home in the first place... but one thing we know for sure, now, is that the movies that are making the most money, are ones that have been released in the past 10 years or so... Avatar breaking the record for highest grossing movie ever. You know what the trick is? Timing! They release a movie into the theatre, and you might be able to download a really bad copy of it, but no matter what kind of tv you have, it's going to look and sound worse then it would at the theatre, and you have a choice... either go and see it now for $10-$15, or wait for about 3-6 months so that you can see it at home with your great system. The theatre just isn't going to die, no way.

I agree. With computers and changes in technology-I think less people will go out to the movies. All of the Blockbuster stores in my area closed-which made me wonder if people weren't going out on a friday night to rent a movie...they watch them on tv or the net now instead.

We don't go to the cinema as often as we used to, but that's because of the cost. We have a 42" TV at home, but I don't think that home TV will surpass cinema for a long time yet, purely due to it's scale.

It's already happening now. People prefer to watch movie in the comfort of their home. Piracy of movies is one great factor why movie theaters are dying.

Thats a good point to raise. I used to work in an independant video store which closed down then a few years later I worked at Blockbuster with the DVD and games that we all have and love. Now the rental industry is taking a beating due to downloads, online rental and online streaming. It might take 20-30 years but cinemas may decline in numbers the better home entertainment gets. Then again it might not, given that people on occasions like to leave the home. What there will be a decline in is independant cinemas doing non hollywood flims. The less they get the more hollywood films come out the less art or big budget films get made. We will loose some great film art.

I recently bought some old magazines from the 70's. In one of them there was an article about movie theaters, and the journalist predicted that movie theaters would all close down in the middle of the 70's. Now it has been 40 years and movie theathers still exist, so his prediction wasn't correct. What about the future? I am not sure, but I think that the number of people going to movie theaters will decline in the future. Many of the small movie theaters in my country have financial problems and I don't know if they will continue to exist. I a lot of things have happened since the first cinema appeared. At that time people didn't have tvs, dvdplayers or computers, and there was only one way to watch a movie - the cinema. Now a lot of other possibilities exist and I think that is one of the reason why the small cinemas in my country are struggling to survive.

I think the numbers will decline... but I won't be one of the people skipping out on the theaters. I just love the experience of going out to a movie with friends or family. There's also nothing like showing up to the first midnight showing in full costume. (For the hardcore geeks among us.) I prefer the theater experience to the home movie experience, and if I could afford it then I would go every week. Oh wait... I can afford the second run theater (Where they charge $1) and I have been going every week!

Well, I think it is possible to happen. People will tend to be more practical on buying dvd's for the movie for it is much cheaper than going to the cinema's. What people would miss is the fun on watching it on a theater. Hopefully the cinema's competition to piracy and piracy itself would end.

No, I don't think it will recline in the future because even with the advancement of technology, not everyone can afford to buy these very expensive wide flat screen TVs and high quality sound systems. Especially here in our country, only the very rich can afford these things. The average and below average families would still prefer to go to the cinemas for their favorite movies and family bonding. :)

I dont think so, going to the cinema is more than just watching a movie. It's a hole experience.. you always invite someone to the cinema.
