What are the best flowers?

Hello fellow mylotter gardeners. I have a question. I am looking for perennial flowers that I can cut and put in a vase, and are long-lasting. I just will not cut flowers to put inside if they are short-lived and only bloom a short time outdoors. A friend of mine gave me a bunch of vases, and I do not have anything to put in them. I have roses blooming but they do not last long in a vase, and I don't have a lot of blooms on them to justify cutting them. If I had a rose or two that has 30 or more blooms, then I would. I have been looking online to find flowers, so far I am picking out carnations. My columbine has had a few babies, so I will be cutting some of those in the spring. Tulips, iris, etc. are out of the question because they only bloom once or twice a year. I would rather have those displayed in my yard rather than in a vase on my table because of the short bloom time. I am in Zone 5 Thank you!

Roses can actually last pretty long in a vase if you take care of them. I once got roses for my anniversary that lasted almost 2 weeks.

True, roses can last a long time in the vase. When I picked the last roses and mums this past fall, they did last for about 2 weeks and the mums a bit longer. Too bad mums only bloom late in the year. Would be nice to have a hybrid variety that blooms through the summer.

i don't know - maybe petunias, geraniums, primroses, or daylilies?.. how about instead of using vases try having your flowers in small indoor pots. or try flower vase prolonging techniques like putting a little sugar in the vase. happy gardening! ^^

I have some geraniums, and this year they finally flowered but have not reflowered yet. Lilies are not an option because they are highly toxic to cats. I did plan on getting a lot of lilies because they grow like crazy, but when I found they can harm my kitties I had to find other types of flowers to plant.

I don't know that much about flowers other than what I have seen throughout my lifetime, but I think roses are long-blooming, as are varieties of dasies. Dasies are so cute, too! Also, in the fall there are chrysanthimums (mums) and marigolds. My favorite flower is a tulip, but that's a very short-blooming flower, unfortunately.

Daisies do last awhile. I got a snowball shasta recently, it is a dwarf so it will not grow so big that the flower tips over. It is a nice compact bush. Also I have black eyed susan and a galardia. The galardia spits out flowers like crazy, so that one I will put in a vase. No worries for cutting it, there are a lot of flowers. Tulips are great, and as you said, short lived. I do not cut those, just let them die off in the yard so they can be enjoyed by all who pass by.
