India

Friends, the Puja (worship ) of our Hindu God , Ganeshji is coming soon. As per Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha (elephant faced God) is considered to be first in line among all Gods, that is why before starting any Puja or Homam or Yagna Ganpati pujan is done first. Lord Ganesha removes all obstacles. Lord Ganesha is also known as ‘Vigneshwara’ [vigna + Eswara] which means the lord who removes all obstructions (Vighna). During the Ganesh puja, the idol of goddess Lakshmi is placed on the left and Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed god is kept on the right. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity and also personifies beauty, grace, and charm. She is normally depicted seated on a lotus with gold coins. Lord Ganesh has many functions in the Hindu pantheon. He is the Lord of Wisdom and the remover of obstacles. For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the statue is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, and fanfare to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees, this is the ritual known as Ganesh Visarjan. At individual homes the Visarjan is also done on 3rd, 5th or 7th day as per the family tradition. All join in this final procession shouting "Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Pudhachya Varshi Laukar ya" (O lord Ganesha, come again speedily next year). After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the statue to the river to immerse it. This festival is celebrated in many places outside India too. This year it will start from 11th of this month September. In my city they have started making big idols. It is a collective effort. So the persons associated have started collecting funds, it involves huge expenditure. I am worried to see one thing, boys around age 10 are moving with printed receipt books collecting donations in the name of this Puja. I know many of them will not spend this money in puja , but spend it otherwise. What about your place, do you observe Ganesh Puja? What is your view on these guys; will they not get spoiled, if they continue such activity? Please share. Professor
