Ok we went to my childrens six month check up yesterday. When my 9 year old was about 2 she hit her front teeth on a claw foot bath tub, pushed them in caused them to become absess and damage the teeth surrounding them... so when she was 4 she had oral surgery, where they pulled out the front teeth and crowned/ capped a few teeth around it. I understood then why they did so, considering she would have these teeth for few more years before they even thought about falling out. Okay my daughter has been doing her same routine as far as brushing/ flossing go and visiting the dentist regulary 2 times a year. the only problem she has is that one of her adult teeth now grew in behind her baby teeth, well this time the dentist called me into the consultation room and told me that my daughter has a "minute cavity in between two if her baby teeth" I asked which ones and he then explained it was on the baby tooth that the adult tooth already grew in for. He then proceeded to tell me that it was too small to put in a filling that they were just gonna cap it. I asked why they couldn't just pull it seeings how the adult tooth was already there... he said that she needs her baby teeth and will have them for a few more years.. then gave me an attitude and the third degree about not making her brush better. told me to go to the dollar store to buy some cheap floride for her teeth that he didn't like what she was using. i said i buy the brand name LISTERINE WITH FLORUIDE, 9 out of 10 dentists recommend it... he said well im number 10 the one that didn't.. telling me that it didnt have floride in it, told me exactly what to look for as far as ingredients go etc etc. Okay.. my daughter is 9, she has been brushing her own teeth for 6 years now, first cavity ever in 5 years and its a tiny tiny one. Her adult tooth is ALREADY grown in, her mouth wash rinse i buy ALREADY has EXACTLY what he said it should, but yet ITS NOT RIGHT... I don't understand it!!! what is the point of keeping that tooth, grinding it down to cap it, to prevent a cavity from spreading and damaging her adult tooth that is ALREADY there!!!

I had moments like this one inside dental clinics. Very frustrating. There was one time where I really want to get back on that dentist that charged me 10 times than expected just for filling the baby tooth of my daughter. I went home broke and angry. I've meet a few very professional and kind dentist but also encounter ones with attitude. I can relate to what you feel. I'm also wondering why the dentist wanted to keep the baby teeth. They would only cause the adult teeth not to grow in proper place. Then you would spend for braces later on. How about seeking for second opinion? I'm sure you are free to go to other dental clinics.

the thing is she is going to have braces. from the accident when she was younger and them having to pull those top teeth, they grew in wrong, and she will be getting braces, thats another thing i dont understand, hes mentioned we will get her into braces once all the baby teeth fall out and adult ones grow in... OKay, so she has 2 baby teeth left... one of which is one they are goijng to cap and the other right beside it... wouldnt it make much more sense to pull that one out now reather then later when the last one falls out?? i plan on getting another opinion, i just needed assurance that i wasnt in the wrong here with being confused, my husband looked at me like i had two heads when i mentioned it to him, but once again he probably only heard every other sentence.. LOL thank you for your response

Wow, I guess I don't understand it, either. I would recommend asking him to explain to you WHY this is what he wants to do... and then I would get a second opinion before you let him do anything.

why i asked him why he said because she will have her baby teeth for a few more years... I said to him that the other tooth is already there and he just disregarded that whole thing.. i am looking for a second opinion, its hard as far as insurance goes though finding one that will look at her with our insurance thank you for your response.. im glad im not the only one confused!!

When it comes to dentists with children's teeth, I don't like them at all. My daughter had to have her first filling when she was four years old. I had this done at an office where one of my friends worked. Well, they charged me much more than they quoted me upfront and I never went back. Fast forward to the time she was six and the filling came out of her tooth. My husband took her to his dentist who did put a cap back on the filling (which has since again fallen out). However, he also recommended pulling all of her baby teeth because her mouth was too crowded. She was six years old at the time and that would have left her without teeth for several years. I opted to not do it. I know she will need orthodontics in a couple of years and I'm willing to pay for that, but I'm not willing to have a toothless child.
