I have been disgusted by the downright nasty, dirty tactics present in our local races (Philly metro area) lately--in fact, that nastiness caused the Republicans to lose my vote in the last presidential election! But this time it's different--I've known Christine O'Donnell since we were kids and the latest attacks are really upsetting!
I've been eligible to vote for the last 20 years, but I can't recall politics being this nasty on BOTH sides in years. What happened to debating on the issues? How can we vote when there's little to NO discussion on the issues that we, as voters, need to know?

hi scorpiobabes yes here in the US its been much worse this year
and I have really evaded responding to political discussions
as the moment I say I am a Democrat I get flamed royally and
I leave feeling bewildered. I thought our country was based on
peace and freedom for all yet the parties line up to hurl sarcastic
and really insulting bricks at each other.I used to belong to the
Republican party but their tactics made me sick so switched parties.
I have never seen such hostility before here on mylot . I just do
not want to fight myself.

It seems that here in the US, we've got the attitude of entitlement back in full force! Everything is about "me, me, me!" and not about helping others. In The Secret, one of the tenants is to give with a full heart, and that by doing so, it will come back. But don't sacrifice, because it hurts. We are often taught to sacrifice for others but it doesn't benefit us at all...when you give from an overflowing heart, you're one step closer to understanding The Secret.

Oh, I don't know. I heard the politics in the 1970s were really bad too. It probably goes in cycles. Having 24 hour access to the news hasn't helped either.

I think that politics has always been nasty and I have been disgusted with both parties for years. If there was a viable thirde party, I think that many Americans would vote most of these clowns out of office. Everything seems to be a self perpetuation of themselves and perpetuation of the party at the expense of the American people and the things that need to be done to move this country forward. There are bills stalled in Congress not because there has been a meaningful debate and Congress is standing on principle but because votes always seem to be along strict party lines these days. Even George Voinovich from Ohio (a Republican) just said that it is time to stop playing games and to pass legislation that rewards small businesses for capital investment and for creating jobs. This isn't a Republican vs Democrat issue. Both parties seem to work the same way.

I like George V! Actually, I think everyone wants to same end, but the means to get there are just skewed!
I have felt that we were sliding into an economic Depression, especially when you look at the similarity:
1929 2008
Paper money built stock market up Paper money built property value up
Either way, the US was NOT operating on actual value. Who decided how much a stock is valued, or how much a house is worth?
Did the WPA work? Yes and no. It spent a lot of money on projects that were created to give people a job in the Depression, but thing is that once these special projects ended, so did the moneys the workers earned. So what about the Stimulus Packages granted to the auto and banking industries? It resulted in a lot of people losing their jobs. What about Obama? He has been trying to create jobs that are TEMPORARY! When the jobs dry up, there's no money going back into the economy.
What this country needs to do is fix the crumbling infrastructure...disasters like the massive bridge collapse, the failure of the levees in Lousisiana during Katrina, and other similar problems can be prevented by continual maintenance! Take the burden off the states and put it into the federal system for a while. Let's work on creating permanent jobs to get the economy started again, instead of throwing a few dollars out there at a few and hope it does something!
This will sound cruel, BUT SOMEONE'S GOT TO DIG DITCHES, BUILD HOUSES AND FIX THINGS! Our country has evolved to a "sissified" society, where everyone relies on someone else to fix their problems! And those that are doing the fixing will become the rich! Unfortunately, not everyone is capable of fixing things, but one should at least try!
George made a good point--small businesses are where every thing started...let's get them going again!
