Are you who you are "supposed" to be or who you want to be?

Sometimes we have to be what I refer to as "supposed to be". We have jobs that we took because of need or lifestyle demands versus what we really want to be doing. I wonder sometimes how it is that those that do what they love to do made it there. I wonder if it's possible for me to one day do the things that I love doing versus those that I have to do. I am kind of in the middle...I do the things I love as a hobby...when I have time...and of course..the daily grind that is required. I'm ok with who I am supposed to be but I do long for that person that I want to be too. So what about you? Which are you? Are you ok with either or are you like me and try to be who you are supposed to and a little of who you want to be?

No. Somewhere along the way I got kidnapped and became a single mother, grand and recently great grand almost over night. I was thrown into a job in the early 2000's that I wasn't fully ready for. I was supposed to be an accomplished writer and editor working in a high rise in San Fransisco and living in a Victorian mansion on Knob Hill or some such place. Ya, I do the things I love as a hobby or when I am not in a deep and dark depression. I dreamed of traveling down there where you are and riding on the back of that handsome tour guide's motorcycle but I have come to realize that I can't and probably never will meet him(or you). I become terrorized to think of traveling across the US and having a extreme panic attack in some huge airport and never making it out of the bathroom. So instead of being who I want to be i live quiet rather pathetic life and enjoy the very simple things. Writing romances and fantasizing about a life that could have been. Wha Wha Wha!

Never say never my friend. You are a very spirited and intelligent woman with a lot to offer. It is amazing how fast time flies. I know what you mean about the overnight thing. I guess that is why I am feeling so...well...hurried with wanting to do what I love. One of these days maybe I'll just come and get you so we can travel the country together..

I am negative alot aren't I? Really trying to change that. I would love to travel with someone. That would be so fun if we got together and travelled all over. I have just put alot of dreams to rest. I am so overweight and can't seem to get this depression and panic attack thing to rest. If you aren't happy with you how can you expect a man to be happy with you? Know what I mean? Ugh!

I guess I am "supposed" to wear scrubs because I'm a home health aide, but I don't, never have, why should I? I don't think I am what is my job, unless my job became what I enjoy, crafting or writing. So far, I'm refusing to "supposed" to be and working a job and being what I want to be the rest of the time.

I have talked and written about living authentically many times. It is something I believe is vital for our contentment. It may not always be possible to do what we really want for a living but following our passions at other times is important. I am getting very close to the ideal lifestyle for me although if I had more money it would be something I would be doing right now! I love to write and have been blessed with the time and space to do so but I also need to make a decent living so I am looking into my own business. I want to open a cattery and take care of other people’s pets while they are away but it is financially impossible right now so I am left with just a dream at the moment. I don’t know what I will do but one thing is for sure, the authentic me does not want a boss ever again!

I know the authentic me wishes not to have a boss too. I think you are right about it being vital to our contentment to be who we are and to do the things that we enjoy. Afterall...these are the things that seperate us and make us..us. Thanks for responding and I hope you get your cattery one day.

There are a lot of things that I am supposed to be. Including the job and the career that I am in. I am supposed to be this and that, but deep inside all I am is 'stuck'. Put in these situations, because of life and circumstances. Of course, I want to be some place else, doing something else, but I have no choice but make do with what I got.

I'm still in the stage of "supposed to be". I want to break out of that stage in my life because I'm so tired of being like others. I'm not really happy with the my life is now but at the same time I'm happy. There are some experiences in my life whereby not much people out there had gone through and know the pain behind it. I want to be free, I want to live life the way I want it to be. I ask for financial freedom, be saving up or spending freely but certainly not to see all my earnings go to repaying of debts. This is not a life I crave for even though it adds some meaning into my life.

The experiences that we have certainly do develop us and educate us in ways that just living an enchanted life can. I think that sometimes we go through rough times so that when we have good times..we appreciate them more. I hope that we both have the lives we crave one day. Thanks for the response.

How well I can relate with this discussion and know right about now in my life I am at a job that many days I am not Happy with and many times really wanting to do something else. I know in time things will happen to where I can be where I need to be for sure, but doing what I have too to see that I get there as well. Right now I am a dispatcher for a Cab company but really wanting to eventually own my own Business full time and never have to work for anyone else again. Hoping in time I can eventually get there as well. I have been doing a lot of Vendor shows over the summer with the Online/Offline Beef Jerky company I am with, and getting ready to become a permanent vendor in a spot around the first of October to see if this can really help make this dream come true. Who I am really depends on my Trust in God and having him help show me where I need to be in life as well. If it is this new venture I am getting ready to embark on then more power for this will happen.

I am so glad to hear that things are looking up for you. You really deserve it with all you've been through. I am ok with the job that I do but I do feel trapped sometimes. One of the problems with me is that I sdon't know what the heck I want to be doing half of the time. Sometimes it is clearer for me than others but I am mostly very restless. Thanks for responding and good luck with your business venture.

Hey Jen~ I'm long past being whatever it was I was "supposed to be"! I think I sort of came close once or twice when I worked in the Medical Field, I only wish I could have stayed there. But, unfortunately my need for more money took me to the "dark side" into the Legal Field, a place no one should ever enter!

Well this is pretty confusing as I am not really sure what would make me the happiest as far as work goes. Sometimes I feel like I want to do more,so I am pursuing some other things at the moment (the acting stuff) and hopefully they will become profitable over time. What I do know is that working from home like I do now is far more enjoyable than what I used to do every day when I went to work in a job repairing cars. I never felt like it was my path then. I always felt like I did not really belong to that line of work, but I stuck at it for 16 years to keep earning the money that needed to be earned. To be fair to myself and the job, I chose it when I was 17 years old and I thought at that time that it was what I wanted to do. Less tan 4 years later, I realised it was not. I got out of the job after 9 years, but went back to that line of work a year later to pay off debts. I am in more debt than ever now, but I am living a happier lifestyle.

Also on a more personal level, I am always getting into various different hobbies and past times, but I never seem to commit completely to too many. Perhaps this is just because I am a learner who enjoys learning new things, but maybe I just do not know what I want!

Hi JenInTN, Your talents that you enjoy doing for fun is probably what you should be doing for success. Sometimes, we are so afraid to fail at something we love to do that we just let our talents go to waste. I have be told that when we were born we were given talents, some more than others. Some of us found a way to use these talents and some of us hide them because of fear. We wonder why we feel so incomplete and our lives are not going in the right direction. It could be because we are not doing what we are suppose to be doing with our talents. I am just now, in my later years, finding my joy because I am doing some of the things that people are now recognizing as my talents. If you know what your talents are, don't hide them under a bushel. You have a right to be who you are suppose to be.

I'm glad that you are finally being recognized for your talents and loves. I think you are right about the fear. Sometimes we spend to much time keeping our eyes on the money and don't realize that our talents might bring a little of that too. Thanks for the response.

...i would say i am who i am supposed to be..since most of the time i let life decide everything and just go with the current...i focus more on the "need" than "want"...in this life, we have to be as flexible as possible, we made mistakes in life but that does not stop us in achieving what we want, we simply have to embrace that sometimes, what we want doesn't meant for us and some dreams are just too impossible for us to reach...however what's important here is we live life to the fullest..living life to the fullest does not necessarily mean we have everything we want, but rather we accept what we get and what we have, be it good or bad with open arms...we are contented and leave no regrets..=)

It is important to take things as they come. Life is full of surprises and it has certainly taken me to places I never thought I would go but I would like to have a bit more time to enjoy the things that make me happy. Work sometimes seems like a ball and chain. Thanks for the response.

We all want to be something or at least, someone in life, but in the law of nature, it usually rare that we actually live our dreams beacuse life is often a puzzle and some kind of an enigma. You need to combine prayers, good luck and a timely intuition to arrive where you really want to be. I thought this was a philosophical disussion-cheers!

I don't much care about being well known, but I would like to be able to do the things that I like to do. The things that make me me. I have a job that requires me to be professional and I am actually an out going and free spirited person. I love art and would like to have more time for it too. I would like to enjoy my life. I do hope that I can one day do that. You are so right about life being a puzzle...I just can't seem to find all my pieces..lol...Thanks for responding.

i think everyone wants to be what they believe they're supposed to be. but some circumstances and considerations make us decide to go and do things or be someone that we really never wanted to be in the first place. the things that make us decide on what we are now which we never wanted to be, are either for good reasons or pale excuses. i've personally experienced these things. i think what's important is if you are able to balance things out, although this can be difficult sometimes. but it can be done. i think it's called compromise. life can be tricky and a big mystery--when we can be happy with something and do it, some amount of sacrifice is done. when we're doing something or being someone we're not supposed to be, there's some amount of comfort, but not total happiness or freedom, oh, life! but cheers, jenintn!

I used to want to do what I loved and enjoyed doing, but as a lifestyle choice it was not really practical for me, I wouldn't have survived for very long if I had to do it for a living, plus I think I would need lots of counselling otherwise i would have gone off the rails. I did try it for a year and I'm glad I've turned my back on it now as I now the know that the disadvantages of it far outweighed the benefits. I then went to do what I 'should' do but don't enjoy - as a result, I did poorly as my heart was not in it, and I am the sort of person that only gets motivated by doing something that I enjoy - and therefore I could never compete with my peers as they had done all the thorough preparation as you would if you were really into something. I am actually now at a cross roads again - stuck with choosing between what I should and think I want to do - I mean, something that I think would be more beneficial to society. Or do something that I am absolutely fascinated with and have almost an obsession over, but perhaps isn't really accessible for me as the college fees to study for it are so high (£20,000 a year) and probably wouldn't be as beneficial to society as the other option... sounds a bit silly doesn't it... :)

No..not silly at all. Sometimes it can seem like a lose lose situation trying to figure it all out. At least you have been on both sides of the fence. That by itself is an eye-opening experience. I think that as we grow and change that it can get very confusing as to where and what we are supposed to or want to be. I would like to have both but that might be a little too much to ask. Good luck and keep us updated.

Hi anitoton...I understand your struggle. My b/f is a musician. He plays most anything with strings and sings too. He moved here 4 years ago and it has been very hard for him to follow his artistic side. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to make a living. Sometimes you can find that wonderful in between place where you can do both. It's a tough place to find but it can be very fulfilling when you do. I wish you the best.
