How do you handle a broken family?

Hi guys don't get mistaken, i just want to ask if ever a situation like broken families came in what would you do as a mom or parent? How do you explain things to your little children? Painful as it may seem, reality really bites. Too personal but i'd like to share about my brother-in-law. I think he gave up on his immediate family. I am really sad because no matter what he still my niece father. Now, my sister is the breadwinner in the family, her family. I hope things will get better soon.
