Hello, I'm Back..I've Not Died But My Internet Connection Did..

...well, for about 27 hours. It all started when the lights on the BT Home Hub weren't on, which is usually a bad sign. Despite taking the connectors out and putting them back in again after one minute, still no joy with BT internet broadband. I then resorted to ringing a "status update" number and lo, and behold, our area was one of the places that had problems, according to BT and "Engineers will be there to sort out the problem as soon as possible. If you have any further problems please visit www.bt.com/broadband/help" which I thought was EXTREMELY funny because I rang the number for the very reason that I DIDN'T HAVE BROADBAND! Haha! I can cope at Mum's when I psyche myself up by not being on a computer for a few days but when it's forced upon me i.e. not being able to get online through no fault of my own, it's more annoying than I thought it would be, plus the fact I'm missing out on chatting to my friends on this site. Do you think it's worth hubby trying to get a refund as he pays enough for both his Mac and my PC as it is. "Rip Off Britain" comes to mind! So, how's your internet connection? Is it stable (like mine is most of the time) or a bit of a pain in the rectum lol.

First of all, congratulations on not dying. :D My Pc was down last week and when we got it back my internet wouldn't connect. Not fun, not fun. Usually my connection is pretty stable though.

I have cable internet, but we use a wireless router to keep the whole house connected with out running a bazillion wires for the cats to get at and we've had times where we've had to reboot the darn thing!

One of my first cats chewed wires, she had expensive tastes since we were really poor back then

Well, our internet is wireless but only for John upstairs, not for me down here! The cat does lie on the wires behind the telly sometimes but doesn't chew or play with them, thankfully!

I would say he should at least ask for a refund. If it is like most places, he will not get it though. It is very ironic that you call them and they tell you to contact them online, surely someone would have thought this out.

that's pretty typical actually, like you can run over to a friend's and use their computer... NOT!

Hiya girls! Yes, I did find it ironic that they gave me a website address (all in an automated message I might add) so I could swear at the phone and not have anyone hang up on me lol.

Firstly a thank you as you just reminded me of doing something I have meant to do for a long time, make a note of the emergency phone number for my broadband provider. I’ve been with Orange broadband and about 3 years ago there was a period where a couple of times a week my internet would die and then come back an hour later, which is bad enough. But I have to say that for at least the last 2 years I have had no issues over my broadband dieing (famous last words). My only issue is that every 6 months Orange phone me up and try and get me to sign up to a new service which would then extend my already 18 month contract by another 6 months. I lost my rag with them last time when I got 3 phone calls all in a space of a couple of hours.

That is annoying! It's like when Talk Talk gave Mum the broadband service (for free) and she didn't ask for it, nor does she want it. Now, I've been told that if I wanted to use a computer at Mum's it's already "set up" for me to do so, which is fair enough but Mum is frightened that the monthly payments will suddenly shoot up and she's not been told (she doesn't have paper billing, ironically, I see the bill from here online, which is part of their broadband service, to complicate matters further)!! BT never even gave us a courtesy phone call to say "sorry" and to tell us what the problem actually was for the internet to be down for over 24 hours. I hope John has managed to contact them in his lunch-break today because I certainly wouldn't let it lie!

Welcome back Jane. It does suck big time when you pay for a service and it lets you down. There are a lot of cheap internet deals here in Australia and they seem tempting on the surface, but I often hear of people losing their internet for periods of time with these companies. We are with Telstra which used to be called Telecom and the government owned main telecommunications company. The government sold it off in various public offerings, changed it's name but it is still the biggest internet and phone provider in Australia. A lot of people think they are bad because they charge more and for many years operated as a monopoly in the industry, but their service is very reliable and the internet speed is very fast. As we operate our business online, we cannot afford to have down time and we have never had any due to the fault of the company. The only time that we have lost internet was when there was big storms in the area once and the whole area was down for most of the day. Most storms we get through without a problem. I hope you have no more of these problems.

Talk Talk just sounds cheap and nasty doesn't it! Telstra use a mixture of Australian and Indian or Pakistani call centres. I had one run in with them not long ago where I got the rudest person imaginable. I lost the plot with him and I could not understand what he was saying. He was incredibly rude so I asked for another person. I then got an Aussie who was the polar opposite and probably the best person that I have ever dealt with at a call centre. So friendly, helpful and speedy at solving my issue.

Your Telstra sounds very much like our BT. It, too, had a monopoly at one time (used to be called the GPO many years ago) but, now that it has competition, its prices seem to be the highest, although they still own all telephone lines in this country. This downtime has been the only time it's happened since installation way back in 2005 when I moved to Carlisle. Before that I was with AOL at Mum's and that was a hideous company to contact if anything went wrong. At one time Customer Services was free to ring but that soon went out the window..and the online help went to India, if memory serves. We've not had to ring BT up in this instance (apart from the automated message, which was most definitely English) but I'm 99.9% sure it's not outsourced abroad, another reason for staying with them because Mum is with Talk Talk and it's entirely the opposite. This is why she is stuck with them for the timebeing because they can't understand her and she can't understand them!

I had this same problem 1 1/2 weeks ago where we hand no internet in the entire area where we live. Speaking to my company they immediately offered me a $7.00 credit as if that would be just okay. I was told no one could come out for four days later. I told them I would pay them $10 bucks if they sent someone out sooner as I specifically work on line and 4 days made to wait would kill me. Ha! Got my credit, big deal right but had to wait 4 full days. Unfortunately because of the fibers in the building this is the only service I can have. So I had no choice but to fret and be in total loss. It was greater on my rectum and I know exactly what you mean.

Yes, it must be doubly frustrating for people (like yourself) that rely on your internet connection to make a living. The companies involved with supplying the internet don't understand all this though, do they?

Absolutely not they do not understand, I actually had to say to a rep that their apologies were not going to cut it and if they did not send someone soon well I was not going to care if they got the monthly payment. HA! Still made me wait four days.

well, welcome back to my lot. Computer problems can be problematic, and I hate it when I run out of time, that is our biggest problem here. I just think that I need to persevere no matter what.

What do you mean by running out of time? I don't understand.
