Forty Books

I ordered forty books off of alibris today as a spree that my husband and I usually have ever so often. forty books will keep me occupied for awhile. I tried to get them in a series, and tried not to spend more then $2.00 on each book. I used a coupon code for five dollars off fifty dollars. The shipping is what got me, I actually spent $50 some dollars on the books and $100 some on the shipping. I don't think I'll use that site again. I expected shipping to be more fair because I was ordering books from the same seller and also a few from the same author. Maybe there's a limit on that I just didn't read about, but either way... I shouldn't need to buy any books for awhile! How many books have you bought at one time? Any wonder why I'm online right now?

I am jealous! I currently have one book that I am just starting. I have to depend on the book cart at work for books to read because I am currently supporting a family of 4 on just my salary and just don't have anything in the budget for books right now. Holy Moley! A $100 for shipping? That is horrific! I might have been tempted to cancel the order if I saw that.

I would have if I hadn't spent so much time picking out the books. We usually buy from Goodwill and we had been buying from Salvation Army before it closed down (if it is yet, if not it's supposed to). My husband and I are only supporting ourselves which is why we can afford the luxury, under normal circumstances we would't spend so much.. Hope you can get some good reads for Christmas this year.

I used to get 10 to 15 books at Christmas time, or if I would go to a special conference. That was years ago - now I seldom buy a book.

You are absolutely correct. I still have a number of books I have not read, plus I'm using the public library so I do not have to spend the money on books. One thing that helps you realize how big your home library is: move from one house to another and you have to move all those books. Another thing about buying more books than you have time to read: your interests may change over time. As your interests change, you may not feel so much desire or need to read a certain book. Thus, money was not used wisely. Have a wonderful day.

I believe we are going to have near 100 books if not more to move when we do move. That won't be that big of a hassle, but if we get more it sure will be. My interests are varied so I don't think they will change, if they do I'll still keep the book or give it to someone. I understand though, we've got to use our money wisely, even for books and things like that. Hope your having fun mylotting Have a Wonderful day as well!

I don't like to buy from B&N because they are usually expensive, atleast in my opinion. Half Price Books sounds familiar, is that a store? I think I've seen it online before!

I have probably ordered 6-10 books all at one time. One time I ot the ten for nearly nothing from a book club. You might want to think about one of these because you get freebies and so forth. Just and idea. I order from Amazon.com . Problem being that each book is 3.50 in shipping because most are from different stores across the country. I make sure I order from the ones closest. Once I ordered a favorite movie and didn't pay attention to where it was coming from. It took like three weeks to get to me. I found out when it came to me that it had come from England. Ugh! But, I think Amazon would have same you money. At 10 books for $3.50 a wack it would have been less than your $50!

Yes I know sometimes you can even find books for a penny on amazon. I was recommended the site and wanted to try it out. It was my fault I didn't look at the shipping deals more closely, and I could've cancelled but I took awhile picking it out that I just didn't want to cancel like that. Some of the books I got are old, I don't know if amazon would have had them, but I doubt a book club would unless they kept some of their older titles. Some books I got were from Grace Livingston Hill, "Brentwood" a book I enjoyed reading awhile back, but never actually got to read the last page because it was torn out, I bought again. I am considering joining a book club at some point though.

Amazon might surprise you. I have found some pretty old books. I have also heard of the one you used. I think you may have to pay alittle extra for the shipping to get old books. No, the books clubs wouldn't have the old ones. I just thought if you wanted newbies. A lot of good new ones coming out too. I gave up trying to keep up with all of them. I will never have time to read them all. And the really good ones twice? Come on!

I haven't tried buying books online because of shipping charges! It is horrendous, specially because we are way out here in the Philippines. Sometimes, shipping charges is double that of the book itself. I do a lot of second-hand book shopping and fill bags in one go. But it's been awhile since my last purchase, only because I've got stacks of unread books so I'm staying away my book haunts until I finish.

I've known other filipinos who have said they aren't happy with the shipping costs to the Phillippines. I really wish that they would just have one flat fee and adjust it depending on how many items are in an order, atleast for things like books. Can you buy from Amazon? I forget if you can or not. There are sites where you can get amazon gc's, though I'm not sure if any are available for the Phillippines. I too have not finished the books I have now, but I am sure I will soon enough and really I don't want to finish them all before I get more.

It is good you have people here in America who are willing to help you with that, and I am sure it's not much of an inconvenience to them. One person here said they and their coworkers / friends will order thigns together and split the cost of shipping, maybe that is something you could do with family or friends?

Yes, we can buy from Amazon and ship here, but it is way too expensive. What I do is order what I want, have it shipped free to an uncle (or a friend) in the US who I know will be coming home soon. And patiently wait for them to arrive. But that isn't always an available option, besides, I feel bad inconveniencing other people. :(

EBay - EBay - EBay!!!! I just received 67 fantasy books that I ordered for my husband - total cost including shipping and handling - $38.69 (58 cents per book including the cost of shipping)! I just do a search for the genre I am looking for - war, suspense, mystery, romance, paranormal romance, fanatasy, science fiction, western, etc and add the word "lot". This brings up a big selection that I can browse through some "lots" are only 2 - 3 books while others contain 100 or more. If I don't see what I am looking for, I'll check again in a few days. I will usually find a suitable deal in just a week or two. You will pay more for a complete series by the same author than you will if you just go by genre; but, if you really want a specific author you can search by their name instead.

I have been using ebay for more than 10 years and buy several things each month from there. During that time I have only had a couple of problems and they were all easily resolved - not shipped because the seller was called out of town on a family emergency (shipped when they returned), the POST OFFICE at MY end returned one package to the seller 3 times even though we both verified the address was correct (reshipped UPS), item had not been deleted from inventory even though it had already been sold (money refunded), I misread the listing and got a movie that was in Spanish instead of English, etc. That is not to say there aren't bad sellers out there; but, they are easy to avoid and if there is a serious problem eBay will step in to resolve (this is easiest if you use paypal for checkout). Simply check each person's feedback. If it is less than 10 items, you need to be careful because they have not been selling there long enough to get a good idea about them. If the feedback is less than 100% positive, you can check their feedback and the listing for the item they sold. Sometimes people do not read the full listing and expect more than the listing states - that is the buyer's fault for not reading. Soemtimes it is a 3rd parties fault - damaged in shipping, slow shipping, etc. Sometimes it is the sellers problem - delayed shipping, not shipping, not listing an accurate description etc. But, by checking the feedback you can get a good idea of whether to trust the seller or not. Clothing - do not order unless you KNOW your size with that brand - some companies can vary on sizes a LOT. Also see if they put actual measurements for the item in the listing and then you can compare to your personal measurements. But, out of all of my ebay purchases I have never had a problem buying books there.

67 books for $38.69 isn't bad at all. I just don't like ebay, I don't have any real reason behind it other then the horror stories I've heard. If I do buy online again, I probably won't use alibris. I most likely will just go back to the thrift stores as it support the community.

I love buying books via the net because they offer me a good discount and the delivery is free of charge. So I often buy books online. Lately I bought about 15 books once because they are the books which my child is interested in. I love China

I think the most books I've ever bought at one time was just a dozen or so... but whenever I buy books I tend to buy them new at Barnes and Noble. I don't really like used books and I like actually feeding authors and publishers. My parents once went on a shopping spree at Half Price Books (used book store) with a special offer bag. You could get 50% off anything you could put in the bag. They also had a gift card. They had something like 300 books and they still wound up spending well over a hundred dollars.

I never actually thought about it that way. I mean I guess you could say I didn't know I wasn't helping the authors by buying used. I do like to buy used as I can get more, and usually we buy locally so it helps people locally. 300 books and still having to pay well over 100 dollars isn't all that bad I don't think.

As a lover of books, I want them to continue to be available to future generations. There's nothing wrong with buying used books, but I know that the publishers and the authors don't get any money from those... so I choose to buy most of my books new instead. That way the author gets their royalties and the publishers go on to publish more book. I do buy books used occasionally to save money and get books I haven't had any luck finding in new book stores... but most of the time I buy books new or just go to the library for new reads. It was a good deal. I just thought it was funny that they bought so many books. It took them forever to read them all though. I don't ever think they're done yet...

Sometimes, I also go on a book-shopping spree. Sometimes, I shop online and sometimes I go to my favorite bookstore to shop there for hours. One time, I bought 18 books online from a single seller. Luckily, she agreed to give me free shipping since I bought tons of books from her. I felt so good that day. I felt I got a real bargain for all those hard to find books plus no shipping fee at all.

I have never been a member of a book club but I am thinking we may join one one day. We usually get ours through places like Good Will, but I wanted to try that site out so I ordered books from there. Atleast they are books I'll read, if not we usually give them to friends.

Alibris is the site that I order from all the time for used books because their shipping is cheaper!!!! BUT you have to play around with it after you choose your books. The first book is $3.99 to ship then if you order other books FROM THE SAME SELLER the next rest of the shipping is reduced. The other booksellers don't do this that I have found. I was like you the first time I ordered books then discovered if I SEARCHED out my sellers I could cut the shipping cost. They also DO HAVE FREE shipping but this is on certain books (NEW) that come directly from them. I have 4 books that I will be checking on to order later and it will be from Alibris BUT only if I don't spend as much or more on a used book compared to a new book. The author has nothing to do with the shipping but the same seller should have been a reduced price unless they have changed their policy since I ordered from them. I have only done it 3 times.

It was the same group of sellers for my order, including alibris in NV itself. I also ordered books from the same author and I thought I'd get reduced shipping. The info is on the homepage, so I figure it's still valid. I must've been charged $3.99 for all if not a lot of it because like I said it was $100.00 to ship. I won't get that many books from them again, if I even decide to shop from them. I might just stick with getting books from goodwill, though alibris seems like a great place.

Yikes that's a lot of money. I really don't like ordering books online since the shipping can be a real killer. As for the highest number of books at once I guess maybe six or so. That's weird because I thought some places waived shipped if you spent a certain amount of money. I prefer to buy books at the store myself but most of them come from the library since they're free and books cost money. Yeah why are you online when you have so many books waiting for you to read?

I have to wait for the books to get here but I still have some to read now. In any case, I think sites that waive shipping or give you a good deal on shipping are usually those where you're buying the books directly from the site / store and not from individuals. Alibris is like amazon or ebay where there are different sellers. I did pick amongst a few sellers, so most of my books came from the same one. I read on alibris that there is a discount with shipping if you buy from the same seller or buy more then one book from the same author. There may have been a discount, after all I did buy a lot of books, but I was expecting shipping to be about fifty dollars, same as subtotal. I did use a five dollar coupon, but like I said I probably won't buy from them, or so many from them ever again. I have enough books to last me for awhile. I'm mainly collecting books as means of entertainment for me when my husband and I get our own place. We're probably not going to get cable, and just have internet unless there's a good package deal at the time, or unless the place we're renting from includes cable. Oh and I meant I am online because I just bought so many books, lol gotta replenish the funds is what I meant lol!

hi - I have bought 8 books from Amazon at one go before. Yup, the shipping costs costs quite a bit versus the book as I try to buy below usd6 per used books. Unless the book is not distributed in my country, I will not splurge more than USD20 on a new book.

Amazon has books for 1 cent which is good but they're shipping is $3.99, so no matter how many you get you gotta think of shipping. Even so, Amazon's a great place to shop for anything, including books. I suppose you think forty books is a ridiculous amount?

Wow, I envy you so much right now. The shipping cost is a bummer, since you weren't aware of it from the beginning, but I'd say you still got a good deal, when you think the activities for the next couple of months are pretty much covered for the entire family. :) I buy books by the ton, literally. When buying from a website, I order in bulk, together with friends or co-workers, and we all share the shipping costs. I search carefully for the best bargains, and then, just before placing the order, I find a $30 book that I simply must have immediately, and there goes all my hard work and frugal living theory. One time, during a trip to Amsterdam, I got so excited about a discount English book store I found, that I bought more than I could fit in my luggage. Faced with the perspective of paying overcharge airline fees, I decided to leave some clothes and cosmetic products behind, rather than the books :)

I bought books mostly for me and a few for my husband, so not the "whole family" lol... but yes it will definitely keep me entertained for the months to come. I would have just cancelled the order if I hadn't spent so much time looking through the books. I did save five dollars with a coupon, small consolation but even so we can afford the purchase, so that's no biggie. I would have left the clothes and cosmetics behind too! Any treasure, books or souvenir alike, would have come home with me!

I dont think I have ever bought 40 books at one time before, but i definately think you were ripped off on the shipping. what site did you go through? I dont think I would ever use that site again. It is a good deal when you said you tried not to spend more than 2 dollars a book but there should have been no reason you had to spend twice as much on shipping. let me know what site you used.
