40th Birthday Cake - Another lovely design from my daughter!

I have included the latest cake that my daughter has made, what intrigues me is the difference in cake decoration in the last 15 years or so. It is 15 yeas since I handed this business over to my daughter. Then all the details on the cake would have been piped on with icing, but I don't even think Helen owns a piping bag now! Those little dots on the cake aren't piped on but some special edible decoration that she applies - she makes all the flowers herself. It is incredible how things change over the years isn't it? Sadly Helen has to have an operation on her hand in November so she will be having to take a month out of her cake making schedule!! Is there still any of you mylotters who use the piping technique for decorating cakes or is it another skill lost for ever?

Hiya chem, Very nice Cake. Sorry to hear about your Daughter having to have an operation on her Hand. She will get over it and will get well soon. A months rest will be good for her. I have“nt made a Cake like that for ages nor would I want to go back to doing it if I could help it. I like looking at them but not doing like that myself.

Hiya chem, Sure she will make up for it when she has her Hand back in condition. People are understanding and the cancelled ones will come back and ask for more because they know that she makes good ones. You just get her to rest the more the better and she will be great afterwards.

I am going to have to raid the refrig again!!! I have never been able to decorate a cake other than put on some frosting. I have tried to make flowers with a piping bag, but oh what a mess I made. I guess I just don't have the patience to figure it out. Even writing someones name on a cake is very difficult for me. They say it is just like writing...no way! Mine always looks like a little kid wrote it. I would love to be able to do it and make it even look semi-professional, but I guess I just don't have any talent in that department.

I think that it is 50% talent and 50% practise that is needed. So keep at it, you never know

I do think there is still a lot of piping going on, by people that don't do it for a living tho... My sister took a cake decorating class some years back and learned how to do it. Does Helen have carpel tunnel? I can see why she might doing that fine work (on the flowers if not the piping,,,)

It sin't carpel tunnel but something very similar she has been told that she will be a month before she can do anything with it.

Hi, Really yummy discussion! I dont know anything about decorating or making cakes. I just know simple ingredients one needs to prepare a cake. But I have never tried my hand in decoration (which is sad). I would really love to learn this art after reading your discussion. This is very interesting and increases your skills a lot. About the piping thing, I guess in my country it is still used. I can see cakes decorated with piping technique in my local cake shops. May be they are no longer used in big five star hotels. Whatever it is, I will seriously consider learning this amazing thing!

Hi! Wow, what a beautiful cake I bet it taste so yummy. Well, cake decorations are at it's finest. I love watching this show Ace of Cakes where they make cakes of different forms. From space ship, to a complete jungle, car, house, you name it. Have you seen the show? People who makes the cake and designs the cake are really artistic people.
