Umbrella or Raincoat for the Rainy Days?

Rainy days are here again in the Philippines. Some find it messy to bring an umbrella. Others prefer to have an umbrella than a raincoat. An umbrella would protect them from being more wet than a raincoat. I do not have a particular reason why I prefer an umbrella. It is just not my thing to bring raincoats. I consider raincoats as more for the boys. That is nonsense for a reason, I know. But that's just me. Umbrella or raincoat, what would you like to bring for the rainy season?

i neither like raincoats nor umbrellas. as much as i can, i like taking to the street and savor the rain. the exception,of course, is when i need to go somewhere where i can't afford to present myself all wet and messy, so i use an umbrella. back when i was a child, i preferred raincoats simply because it was more practical and less cumbersome. now i don't. if it's only a shower, then i go out, sans umbrella or any form of cover. i love the rain--the sound of it, the feel of it.

Hello i am aware of the rainy season in your country, here it is gone, this year we did not had a single day of heavy rain, well normally i don't go out in rains, no more going to college daily, i am retired lol But when i go to mall or seminars, i use a duckback raincoat, i find it comfortable like a overcoat, one disadvantage it covers up to knee only.. my sons use full pant, full shirt type.. Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Professor. .

this confirms my idea that raincoats are for men, professor! though i know that not every man thinks of this as that.

You know, I actually don't like either one. We don't have quite the rainy season here you do though I don't think. Although we can take periods of time where it rains and rains a lot! I don't like messing with either one a raincoat or an umbrella. If I had to pick one I would probably go with the raincoat though. I don't really like coats though they are too restricting! I hate having to deal with an umbrella though, especially a wet one!

hello, macdolinger. i think umbrellas and raincoats will be messy to have with. but i still would go for the umbrella. you got me thinking about how it would be inconvenient to board your car with your very wet raincoat while with an umbrella, you would just turn it off and you can put it aside not wetting the car seat.

Yes, that may be an advantage to an umbrella indeed. Unless you are clumsy like me and will get soaked while trying to get it down and put in the car!

For me it is always going to be an umbrella. The reason that I make this choice is that I feel like an umbrella is a lot less messy than a raincoat in the long run. You see, when you are using a raincoat and you need to get in your car, you will get the seats of your car all wet if you are getting into the seat without taking off your coat. However, with an umbrella you are able to close it after you are in the seat of the car and able to keep the car from getting as wet.

exactly the same reason i have. it could really get messy with your raincoat on and you have to ride the car.

Some how I see rain and my brain triggers an umbrella. When I think rain-coats my mind diverts to children. Don't know why this is, but I can't imagine me in a raincoat.

I think I don't even carry an umbrella when it rains here. I am too lazy to carry one.lol But of course when my daughter needs to go out in the rain, I would'nt hesitate to bring an umbrella with me! I prefer umbrellas. A rain coat could be a hassle to bring because there are no poles to hang them on here in the Philippines. When I was a kid, my mother bought us cool colorful raincoats! And it was fun to wear it! It was very useful that time since we only walk from home to school. As I grew older, I carry an umbrella. It is more ladylike to watch than wearing a raincoat. This is my opinion. So I consider raincoats more for kids then. =)

yeah, they are much fun to look at and cute to see them under the rain. But I suppose too that when the ladies wanted to bring an umbrella because also to protect from the sun.

i like umbrella. not the usual size though. i like the big ones. almost near to the umbrella of the "samalamig" vendor. hehe. lol. but true. i prefer to bring with me umbrella than raincoat. but neither umbrella nor raincoat can protect my shoes and the lower end of my pants from getting wet and dirty. i just can't do anything to protect my white uniform when i was in college.

i am trying to figure out in my mind what i would look like with that size of an umbrella ! i think when the rainy season sets in, everybody must be ready. i have an officemate who brings a pair of shorts and t-shirt because he knows he will be swimming again in the floods when going home from work.

I have never worn a raincoat and don't think i will until I have to sail the 7 seas. I have seen my kids in raincoats and they look just adorable and this, like the swimsuit, makes a great excuse for getting wet or puddle jumping. I on the other hand, like a good old fashioned umbrella. I don't like to get wet all that often especially in the rain so a quick run from the car to the house is about all I need it for. I totally prefer the umbrella to a raincoat!

Hello there, It depends on the weather. if the rain isn't that hard, i would just use the umbrella, but if the rain is as hard as a blizzard, i would use the rain coat. since my umbrella would be ruin if it's used. But it's better off preparing both so that you can determine what kind of protection you would be using if things go wrong.you can't simply just use the umbrella if the storm was in almost signal number three.

i have to agree that for heavy rains during storms, raincoats are more helpful.

if possible i would not bring any of them. when go to class i prefer my bag to be slim and easy to bring. my bag just enough for my books and there is no place for an umbrella..(even the small size umbrella). but if it is a heavy rain, i would choose umbrella than raincoat, i think it is more convenient to use. where we can keep it anyway even it is wet.

Umbrella is always with me anywhere I go. It prevent me from heat and rain. Especially nowadays, heat of the sun strikes very hot then rain abruptly fall which is prone to illnesses. So, it would be better to bring umbrella all the time for health purposes.

i like raincoats. i bought raincoats (batman and mickey mouse) and boots for my boys and i think they look cute. as for myself, i have yet to buy a raincoat that's transparent. no doubt umbrellas are useful in both sun and rain but i usually forget my umbrella (in the school corridor, mall, church...) also, with raincoats, i can use both hands to hold my 2 unruly boys.

transparent raincoats? it seems like a nice idea for the grown ups. my children had lost many umbrellas. that is one of the advantage, i have to agree.

I too prefer to bring umbrella than raincoats. When i think of raincoats first think that comes to mind are really children. I think raincoats are for children. And i hate bringing the coat inside my bag, it's a bit heavy and when it's wet, it's really impossible to keep it inside the bag or place it somewhere that will make it dry easily, unlike umbrellas, they dry easily when we place them in the corner of the room.

exactly one of those reasons that must be considered when bringing raincoats.

If it was rainy and windy at the same time, it would be hard to bring an umbrella around. I prefer to wear a thick raincoat instead because it makes it easier for me to move and walk faster. Another thing the ground will get sometimes slippery when it's raining. So holding an umbrella won't really help you much for safety.

so now, that is some situation. i think you have a point here. i remembered i had had experiences like this. my umbrella was destroyed because of the heavy rain and winds that time. you are right, too, about the safety aspect. thank you for the nice idea.

umbrella. it's always umbrella for me during rainy days (sometimes, even at sunny days). besides, all of my classmates bring umbrellas instead of raincoat. it's more convenient.

i prefer umbrella because of some reasons 1. it is more safe than raincoat 2. it is more portable than raincoat 3. it is easy to use than raincoat 4. rain coat can use individually but you can make a sweet journey with your girl friend or others girlfriend with using umbrella hehehe

An umbrella. I always have one stashed inside my bag for sudden rains. I'm not sure about raincoats. I mean, when you get to the place you're going to, they don't normally have a mudroom that allows you to take off and hang your raincoat. And it's too, I don't know, aesthetically unappealing. lol! When it's raining, I normally take an umbrella and use a pair of rainboots. I don't want to get my feet wet or ruin my shoes.

aesthetically unappealing exactly! why didnt i think of the boots? i think i ought to have a pair for the rainy seasons.
