Staying still for long periods of time can have adverse effects on the body. Weather you're sitting on the couch watching t.v., or sitting in front of the computer reading and typing all day long. Its not so unhealthy, but it does takes tole over a long period of time. However, there are things you can do to keep your body fit and active and avoid the problems that come with staying still for long periods of time. Idealy its a good idea to stand every hour or so and pace around the room, get a glass of water or use the restroom. Something-- anything to get the body moving. However, there are those people who have no choice but to sit for eight hour shifts in front of a computer and don't have that luxuary. But, if you can, do so. If you're at home. Always have some kind of light on. Avoid uing the computer in the dark. While monitors give off their own light sorce, it can cause eyestrain stairing with it being the only source of light in the room. Turn on a lamp, open a windo. Something so there is anoter source of of light for the eyes to focous on. Readjust your position every so often so you can avoid back problems. Moving the slightest bit can incress blood flow and aid in making life a litte bit easier to handle. As long as you avoid being as stiff as a bored you should be fine.

Thx for the information! It is very helpful, especially the last one. I think most people suffer from back pain because of bad sitting posture and using computer usually requires long hour sitting. People tend to forget that time has flow when they are working in front of the monitor until they get stiff neck and sore back. It doesn't mean everyone will get bad back or neck just for one or two hour's computing time. The pressure accumulates in your muscles. It can take 2 or 3 years before your neck or shoulders become bad, and it sometimes develops into chronic pain since muscles are held in uneven position for such a long time, they can't relax any more. Some headache problems are also caused by stiff neck muscles. So using computer for long (not only 'long' by meaning of each time you use it, but also in the 'long' term) can be a health concerned issue.

Yes, I believe it does. It affects our eyes, neck muscles and backbone. I am a psychologist and the psychological affects are a big concern for me too, I will like to share some. According to a research study based in China, excessive use of computer especially internet makes us depression prone. Excessive use of internet is not related to anxiety or panic attacks. But excessive use means using computer for more than 2 hours a day. I believe computer does make you weak, psychologically as well as biologically.

Really? I've spent most of my life (probably up to 10 hours or more a day) on the computer for the last 10 years, and while I do agree on the negative effects on the eyes, neck muscles and backbone, the depression to me sounds completely fake. I know many other people like myself and none of us have depression issues, or even close to it. And 2 hours a day is NOTHING. I'm a computer gamer and one game in itself can take half an hour to an hour, and we usually play a few games, take a break, then play another few. Up to 6 hours a day of just gaming in a day, probably the rest for internet browsing.

Yes. Because there are so many other things you could be doing to "strengthen" yourself other than being on the computer, depending on what you mean by "weak". That being said, I am addicted to the internet and unless I have a good reason, would not get off it. It's bad for me, I know, but it's how I grew up lol.

I think it is not the body that it makes weak..It strains our eyes. Based on experience. And some dermatologist says that radiation coming from computers can add up to wrinkles and makes us looks older.

Hello Graceekwenx. If you mean does it make our eyes tired then yes it does. We should take a break away from the computer screen for ten minutes every hour to avoid eye strain and tiredness.

Yes but it is not to be confused with eye damage. Even sitting too close to the TV is a myth. Eyestrain is a very real threat though and a real nuisance.

Maybe. Because it sucks all your energy. You are sometimes too focused into your computer, that all your energy are being used up, your brain functioning at maximum rpm, and your fingers on the left hand are racing with fingers on the right hand! We just don't notice them, but I think they are the one who can bring us down...

You don't say a lot about your discussion so most of us will assume. Weak on what? Well maybe facing computer can make us weak because it doesn't encourage exercise.

Computers were intended to broaden us to everlasting knowledge. However we have also evolve in such that perhaps we rely on in for too much. I am one that is consistently online daily, however I do try to balance my daily obligations while also balancing my nature to earn.

Yes but only in the sense that we could be doing so much more with that time. There is a time for the mind, which can be spent on the computer and time for the body and soul, which can be spent in the real world. I try to limit my computer time as much as possible because I feel I am smart enough for now and I need to work on reality a bit.
