What kind of books are in your book shelf?

I am a very versatile reader and I love variety. I was just looking at my book shelf and thought..wow...there are a lot of different kinds of books here. On the top shelf there are the small paperback books..some mystery..some horror..the next shelf there are the hard backs..short stories, a very odd mystery called Almost Adam and some suspense. There are a couple of biography books too. On the next two shelves are educational and instructional books along with a few hobby books. I need to get another bookcase for the rest of my hobby books downstairs...lol...but anyway..I was just wondering...what kind of books do your shelves house? Are there several different kinds or do you have favorites?

i don't own a lot of books... i'm a student and i've been moving from one place to another the past few years so i decided to keep my load light. i usually give away books after reading them. and most of the time i borrow books instead of buying them because i know that i won't be keeping them anyway. i have on my shelf...hmm...let's see...textbooks. hahaXD other than that, i have a novel (1964 by orwell, it's old but i suddenly felt like reading it when i saw it in a secondhand bookshop) and a thin poem book. and that makes up my bookshelf. if ever you encounter scarcity of space at your place, i'll lend you mine.XD i accept book donations~ hahaXD

I can see why you wouldn't have a collection with you moving around so often. Sometimes a student gets to read enough..lol..I know..lol...I have went back to school myself. I had a class on Southern Literature that consisted of a lot of reading. I was glad that I enjoyed what I was reading..it's hard to read things you don't enjoy. Thanks for the response.

I definitely play favorites. The vast majority of the books in my home collection are fantasy/ high fantasy. I have a few science fiction book, some thrillers, and a few non-fiction books about faith, marriage, and giraffes (Yeah, I know that last one sounds totally non-sequitur). I don't really keep my school textbooks in my home collection of book. I usually keep them out by my backpack where they're under foot. My bookshelf is full so I've got books on my desk, on top of my desk, on my nightstand, under my bed... I really need a new bookshelf but I don't really have anywhere to put it. So right now I'm just going to be surrounded by book! (And I love it!)

I have a great love for reading too. I remember being surrounded by books of all types as a child. My grandparents loved to read too. They instilled my love I think. I have some hobby books packed up in the basement..maybe others as well. I need another bookshelf too. Sounds like you have a lot of interesting books. I would love to be set free in the middle of them..lol...thanks for responding.

I was also surrounded by books of all types as a child... but I've kind of zeroed in on fantasy over the years. I still read other genres of books but not as often and I typically don't enjoy them as much. When I get my own house then I want to have a home library with lots of bookshelves and lots of books! lol I love to be set free around hundreds of books too. I might never come out though.

I've always enjoyed reading. It's always been something I had fun doing. There are various types of books on my bookshelves. Some of them are mine, others are my husband's books. I have some non-fiction, some murder mystery novels, some of our textbooks, some biographies, just to name a few. We have so many books that sometimes I forget what books we have.

Hi dodo! I like having a lot of books around. I can never tell when I might get the notion to read. I need to get some more plus another bookshelf. I know my granparents used to have a hard time keeping up with them when I was little. They had bools everywhere. There was a long walkin closet that was lined with books..an odd closet that had two doors. One entered it from the hall and the other door was from the master bedroom. I used to go in there and just sit for hours looking through all their books. I'd even take a pillow and blanket in there...lol.

Mylot cuts into my reading time too. That's ok though..lol..I enjoy my time here. I bet those reference books came in very handy when you had your store. I wish I had some of the books and such that my grandparents used to have. And photo albums. They would be my most precious treasures. Thanks for the response Jo.

Hi Jen, I am a reader too though I read what is relevant and needed for my work. I am a computer programmer or more specifically a web developer who works with PHP and those stuff. I have my bookshelf piled with books related to computers- from basic C programming to Artificial Intelligence. I read most of them... Yes, one more thing that I think I should let out here - I have a bad habit of collecting books. So there are many books in that shelf that I have hardly read. I also collect books related to Quizzes, Puzzles, Crosswords and similar topics. I spend my free time solving out some pages from these too. Cheers, theSids.

most of my books are packed away, but they are probably 50% science fiction/fantasy, 20% craft, 20% mysteries and then horse books. Might be a few stray romances in there...

Nothing wrong with the random romance. Sounds like you have some great stuff. I have most of my craft and hobby books packed away too. I haven't even had a chance to look at over half of them. My grandmother that I reunited with a few years back sent them to me just before she passed. I do wish I had the time to get down there and check them out. She was quite the crafty one.

I have a crazy amount of books. I love having my own little library and I'm always picking up more cheap books in charity shops. It drives my partner nuts at times, but he loves reading too. I have a lot of old university books (I can never part with books!) on critical and cultural theory and literature theory, but also horror, burlesque, historical, sewing, biography, crafts, spiritual, classical... I'll try pretty much anything! I wish I could hire someone to organise all my books for me! They could alphabetize my DVDs while they were at it too!

I like picking up books here and there too just so I will always have something available that I haven't already read. I might have to charge you to organize your dvds though..lol...take care and thanks for the response.

That would be a shame to have to destroy them. The internet really has taken the place of books for a lot of people. I still have a great love for them though. I am a witch so I have a lot of books about my religion. I'm also a college student so I have a lot of college textbooks. My boyfriend and I laugh because when we get our own place together we will have 2 of almost every textbook... all my witchcraft books and his collection of Bibles passed on to him by his dad. We are an odd couple but we love each other very much.

Hi Jen! I have quite a collection of books in my house, too. Like you, though, I never meant to collect them. My daddy really liked to read and so do I, btw, and I have several shelves full of a variety of books in my den. There are bibles, medical books, encyclopedias, books of short stories and poetry, religious books, books about Abraham Lincoln, horse books. There are just so many that I can't begin to name them all. My parents belonged to the Reader's Digest Club a long time ago and I have several books in there that came from the club. These books have a lot of good stories in them. I also have some cookbooks but most of them are in the kitchen. I ran a bookstore from 1984 to 1986 and I have a few I bought from there. We had to go out of business because we didn't do any good, I hate to say. We also rented movies and vcrs. I like mysteries, self-help books, biographies, Grace Livingston Hill books, and it seems like I'm always reading the medical books, lol! My parents used to kid me about reading the medical books so much. They said I ought to be a doctor the way I'm always reading them! I was mainly reading about problems I had, though. As you can see, I grew up with a variety of books, too.

Hi cyrus! I remember those Reader's Digest books from when I was a child too. My grandparents had a membership too. I bet your collection is amazing! I would love to get lost in all those books. I like reading medical books and articles too although I haven't in a long time. Maybe you should be a doctor with all that knowledge. I don't think we can ever learn enough about the things that interest us. Nothing like disappearing into a good book for while either. Thanks for responding.

What a question! I've got four large freestanding bookcases, a small one, about 30 - odd feet of wall shelving and more books shelved on top of the chest of drawers and cupboards. As for subjects, there's a lot of SF and fantasy which I began reading back in the 60's and am still buying and reading, though not as much as I used to. The wall shelving is mostly filled with paperbacks dating back to the 60's and 70's - many of them are now collectors items. Other subjects are historical novels - Lindsey Davis being a big favorite, and naval historical fiction of any kind (Hornblower as so on) I was in archaeology for nearly 20 years and so there are a lot of books and journals on that subject. There's an old, (printed in 1901) encyclopedia, Books on history especially military history and especially Napoleonic wars, a small collection of occult and Wiccan books, another small collection of cat books, and a whole load of miscellaneous books and novels of all sorts filling an entire bookcase.

I used to have quite a collection of books when I had the house with my ex. I had one room that was just lined with bookshelves and had a huge huge variety of books. It was basically my little getaway room. I miss it. Anyway when I moved, I downsized...had to and I donated most of my books. Now all I have is a couple of natural health books, a dictionary, a thesaurasus, a couple of spare novels just in case I run out of reading material and my Alice in wonderland set which is very old as well as my Andersons fairy tale book from when I was a kid. I find I visit the library a lot more often now than I used to. I always have a book going. If I don't get them from the library, I will buy some 2nd hand. I don't hold them any longer but instead I pass them on.

Yes, It's one of the things that I miss the most about that house. It was sunny and just a beautiful room...like my own private library. My daughters sometimes used to use it to do their homework. It was really hard getting rid of all those books at first. Then I realized they were meant to share. We had 6 kids between us so that little room was very important to me back then. Now it's just me and my one daughter still at home so the escape is not so vital as it once was.

When I was younger I had a lot of books, but I have lived at many different places and when I moved I often gave away some of my books, because I couldn't bring everything. I often borrow books at the library instead of buying them, and I sometimes donate books to charity if I know that I am not going to read them again, so I don't have a huge collection of books. I have some guidebooks, dictionaries and phrasebooks from different countries, some books about psychology, psychiatry and nursing, some new age books and a few novels and some collections of poems.

OK, now you've found a subject close to my heart. I love books. I have a very large library and if I ever get to retirement, I'll have enough reading to keep me busy for a long, long time. I only wish I had more time to read now. I have a wide variety of subjects on my bookshelves. I like fiction and presently have a penchant for David Baldacci novels. I also like Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy and well, I could go on and on. I also like non-fiction. I read about subjects that I get interested in for whatever reason at the moment. I watch the TV show Deadliest Catch so I found books by my favorite captains on the show. I read "Time Bandit" by the Hillstrand brothers of the boat by the same name and I'm presently reading "North by Northwestern" by Sig Hansen of the Northwestern boat. There's a pretty good selection of information and reference books on my shelves too. If I get interested in doing or building anything, I'll usually get a book or two on the subject. I just got a nice one on how to design and build a pole barn. I've got books on aviation, hot rods, motorcycles, tractors, woodworking, nature and the outdoors, animals, gardening, history, business, politics, mostly "guy stuff" I guess you would say. Oh and lets not forget science fiction. I really enjoy reading GOOD science fiction. Not just the "Star Wars" type, but the kind that really makes you think about things. Some of the volumes of sci-fi short stories are really good. I always liked Robert Heinlein too. (that's dating me a bit I know...) You never want to go to the bookstore or library with me because I can be there for hours just browsing, although I never leave empty handed. I always find something I have to have. I never seem to get rid of them either. The library just grows. I love it though. When I build my house, I'm going to have to have lots of bookshelves in my den!

WOW! Sounds like you have an awesome collection that is only going to get bigger. I like the thought of collecting books and having them when I retire...lol...even though I may never be able too..it is a nice thought. I love the sci-fi and I love horror too. I like biographies about interesting people and I LOVE hobby and craft books...probably more on the girly side..but crafts and hobbies nonetheless. My dream is to actually have something published that someone can appreciate in their library but in the meantime I am going to enjoy making my own. I like the idea of a room dedicated to bookshelves full of different kinds of books. Thanks for sharing and take care.
