Saturday the Mother of the 20th Century, Barbara Billingsly aka June Cleaver of Leave It To Beaver fame passed away at the age of 94. Leave It To Beaver was probably the best show on television when I was growing up. Beaver's Mother was the role model for most Mothers of that day!!! Since Leave It To Beaver began in 1957, it has been showing on atleast one channel every day for the last 53 years. This morning Tom Bosley of Happy Days fame passed away. After his stint on Happy Days, he also starred on Murder She Wrote & Father Dowling Mysteries. He had also become recently famous as the spokesperson for SMC Merchandising. Both Barbara & Tom were the intelligent parent that instinctively knew the right thing to do for their child!!! What are your memories of these 2 great stars???

It is truly a loss....I remember both of them well but Tom Bosley even better and I got hooked on him in Happy days so watched the other programs he was in....Marion Ross who played Mrs. C on Happy Days is origionally from here where I live so it makes it even more fun to remember all the great episodes of happy days.

I started watching Leave It To Beaver when I was about 7 years old. My Mom didn't wear pearls & dress in fancy dresses every day, but she was the voice of reason in our family much like June was in the Cleaver household!!! So, I feel a connection to her even though we never met!!! Tom Bosley played such a wise Father to the Cunningham clan that I couldn't help but admire him!!! I also followed him to his other shows because of the persona he portrayed. I liked him equally well in Murder She Wrote & always felt that he & Jessica Fletcher would have made a GREAT duo!!!

Life was simpler when Leave It To Beavr was on. Buthow many mother's did the house keeping wearing pearls? Don't forge Bosley's other big role on TV as Sheriff Amos Tupper on Murder She Wrote whee he played one of the few characters who affected a Maine accent.

Yes, life was much simpler back when Leave It To Beaver was first airing!!! Buthow many mother's did the house keeping wearing pearls? Think about it...they always spoke of her doing chores; but, other than washing a few dishes (with Ward drying), what housekeeping did she do??? Obviously, the men who created this show felt women needed to dress better at home!!! I did mention Murder She Wrote as one of the shows Tom Bosley starred in. I also mentioned Father Dowling Mysteries However, he was best known as Mr C on Happy Days I am still saddened by the passing of these 2 American Icons!!!

Hi LadyM, I have not heard of Barbara as I am form the UK but I do remember Tom Bosley of Happy Days, Murder She Wrote and Father Dowling Mysteries, and I loved him dearly, he made me laugh, I she mis him but thankfully we are still getting Murder She Wrote on our Sky TV channel. They have been many famous people dying this October and its so sad, what with Tony ~Curtis and Eddie Fisher and may more R.I.P to them all. Tamara

The Cast of Leave It To Beaver... - Jerry Mathers, Tony Dow, Barbara Billingsly & Hugh Beaumont made up the cast of Leave It To Beaver.
Barbara was the Mother to Wally & the Beaver (Theodore) Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver. Since they claim Leave It To Beaver is still shown all over the world, I would have thought it would have been shown in the UK. It was one of the original "family" shows on 1950's television here in the US. Barbara played June Cleaver the wife of Ward played by Hugh Beaumont. The Cleavers exemplified the ideal suburban family of the mid-twentieth century. June was always impeccably dressed complete with her single string of pearls. It was one of the first TV shows that I was allowed to watch regularly. Here's a picture of the show's family so you can get an idea of their perfect look...

Barbara Billingsly was also the woman who could interpret "jive" on the original "Airplane" movie! Happy Days was my favorite show when I was in school! Mr. C will be missed!

I had forgotten about her jive bit on Airplane. That part showed the light-hearted side of her personality. Jerry Mathers "The Beaver" said she had been a Mentor to him & much like a second Mother. I guess I felt closer to Barbara as she had been a part of my life for 53 years, where Happy Days came on a good number of years later & the reruns aren't shown daily. I think both of these actors will be missed!!!

I knew about Barbara Billingsly but didn't know about Tom Bosley. This is sad and I have great memories of both, especially June Cleaver !! It's marvelous to look back and know I was a part of that time..

Its sad to read about stars that have passed away. Both actors were great parents on screen and in real life. I enjoyed the television shows they were in then and still watch them sometimes today.

Yes, they were extremely reasonable parents... more so, I'd venture to guess, than actual parents of the time.

I can honestly say that my Mom was almost as reasonable as June Cleaver, but I'd be lying if I even attempted to pass off my Dad as being as reasonable as Mr C!!! I was always glad that my Mom made my Dad hear the voice of reason!!!
