Comfort foods in winter.

We had our first frost this morning and that got me thinking about winter comfort foods.
I love hearty stews, curries, casseroles and other one-pot meals especially in winter. The slow-cooker sure does earn it's money when the weather gets colder.
I also love baked potatoes with butter.
What are your winter comfort foods?

Soups (chicken noodle and split pea) and chili are some of my winter favorites.
Other than those slow cooker favorites - holiday baking (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years). The things that you rarely bake any other time of the year - fruit cake, pies, Christmas cookies, etc.

Hi. hvedra. I love eating hearty soups that has plenty of meat and vegetables in it. Yum!
It warms my body up and I feel so much more better after eating something hot inside of my body. I also love eating fruit oatmeal for breakfast on a cold wintry morning too.

As you say, stews and casseroles are good comfort foods. I also make dry legumes at least once a week. They are very unexpensive ( I buy the dry legumes, soak them and use my prssure cooker)and they are good sources of protein if mixed.
Shepheard pie and lasagna are other dishes I usually do a lot more in Winter than in Summer. In Summer I do more cold veggies and salads.
Happy posting!

I'm with you! I do a lot more cooking when the weather gets cold. I use the crock pot more for sure. It's great for beef stew. I also like to cook up a big pot of soup or chili on top of the stove. I really like to experiment with different types of casseroles too. There's just so many different kinds to make that are really good. I guess you would say it's all comfort food but it's the kind of food I really like. I cook it more in the winter mainly because it's nice to add the heat of the stove to the house and fill it with the great smells of great food. Hmmmm, I'm getting anxious for cold weather now!

I like stews too, and anything with mashed potatoe so shepherds pie and fish pie are dishes I tend to make a lot in the winter. Pasta bakes are good too, anything that's filling really since when it's cold you feel like eating more than when it's hot so you need things that fill you up.
It's funny how being cold makes you want to eat more, it's probably because our bodies burn more calories when cold than when were warm.

I think that my winter comfort foods are the same as my summer ones!
I love spicey curries and will eat them all year around. At lunchtime I usually eat something very healthy with salad type vegetables whether it be cold or warm outside.
Although curry does warm me in the summer when I am already hot. I tend to think it is worth eating it as I love it so much!

Corn meal is in my thoughts alot. Stew with horse radish. No curries please. I haven't been able to handle those since my daughter was a baby and I tried to fix shrimp curry for my husband. Soups with several vegetables and and meatballs in them. Oh, and some fresh made bread with butter.

Anything hot and delicious can be a comfort food in winter. The more chocolate it may have, the more comfort it gives. Hot chocolate is what I go for first when winter sets in.1 person likes this

You beat me first in posting comfort foods today. Congrats hehe. I love hot coffee with fresh milk, hot soup. Anything hot for that matter during the cold seasons. It is also rainy here so much like the winter months you are talking about there. I love anything with potatoes in it too. Pasta like spaghetti and carbonara when served hot is also good. When the weather is much warmer i love ice cream and sundaes.

In the winter I like to eat a lot of hot things. I like spaghetti, chicken pot pie, and chili w/ rice to name a few things. Around the holiday's however I really like eating Ham with mashed potatoes and yams. For desert I really like fruit cake and candy canes w/ lemon.

I grew up in Wyoming where we had 9 months of cold weather and 3 months of kind of warm weather, so most of my cooking skills were foods for cold weather. Potato soup, chicken or turkey and home made noodles, beef and barley stew, with cornbread or homemade yeast bread, pinto beans with fried potatoes and cornbread... that stuff sounds so good right now!!
I use the slow cooker now but I learned to make those things on a wood cookstove.
