I was reading through A magazine called First for women. The issue is May 24, 2010. There was a small article about how rubbing your ears can make you calmer. I was like you know what thats really ironic because when I'm nervous I play with me ears I rub them. Must be somehow it helps calm me down and I never really realized it until I read that article. Very interesting.
Has anyone else ever heard that rubbing your ears can make you feel calmer? Where did you hear about it? Have you tried it and found that it works? If not give it a try the next time your stressed and let me know if you feel any different.

Hi Shaggin,
I was not aware of this but like you I have the habit of scratching my earlobes sometimes when I am not happy and depressed. Never gave it a thought that this might be to cool off or calm down as you say.
Would try to be cautious now and try to relate and find out if this is what actually works behind.
Thanks for sharing this information here and hope to see some good replies that can help us conclude.
Cheers,
theSids.

So thats pretty interesting that we both subconciously did this and didnt even know that its supposed to be a natural calming method. I dont know if it would work for me to actually sit and do when I'm nerved up. Its just something I did and didnt even realize it. I dont like people to see me do it so I catch myself when I'm in public and stop doing it lol.

I appreciate your idea for testing this out and maybe I too should do this... consciously... ? would it make a difference then?

A side note, not exactly what you are asking, but I have read that pulling on your ears will help you remember things better. I also worked in a pre school that had lots of children with learning an behavioral issues. One of our inservices we talked about various sensory stimuli to help with learning. The guest speaker said that the way many pre K and Kindergarten to young primary teachers asked for attention was to ask the children to put their listening ears on. Generally the kids would put their hands on their ears, or cup their ears or pull on them, and I guess studies show that this helps them focus better for real. l am not surprised that it is being said that it is calming to rub your ears. I tend to pull my ear lobes if I need to wake up or pay attention.

Wow that is really interesting. I actually remember way back when I was in school the teachers would tell us to put our listening ears on and I think she did cup her ears but I dont remember if we were supposed to cup ours as well or pull on our ear lobes. I cant quite remember but maybe that was a subliminal way to get us to learn something due to studies the teachers had done on ways to help students learn better. Very neat theory.

Hi. shaggin. I have never heard of this before. I will be sure to try it the next time that I feel stressed. Thanks for this information.
The only time that I will rub my ears, is when my ear lobe is itching or the inside of my ears are itching as well.

I think I've seen this in an old sitcom. Where one of the actors rubbed his ears because he was getting angry. But I never made the connection that it was for making yourself calmer.
Maybe I should try it, the next time I get stressed out. But maybe when nobody's looking.
