I feel that this is a very important aspect of parenting. We have to make some special effort to cultivate the reading habit in our children .A child who likes to read automatically takes an interest in studies and other intellectual pursuits thereby doing well in life .
When my children were growing up , I made it a point of gifting them with interesting books for their birthdays or when we went shopping. I would take them to local libraries and also book shops where they would browse through books and show an interest to buy . I feel it has helped them immensely in forming a well rounded personality ...
As a teacher,I have realised that children who take an interest in books and have developed a reading habit are the children who are doing well in their studies and also show more understanding while dealing with others...
What are your views on the subject ? please do share your views ...

We are reading family. I sleep among the books. My bed room is full with books. My children follow me. they read till they are sleepy. My daughter have a habit of reading in the toilet also. their reading is higher than their age. And they have a vast knowledge also. I am so much worried about their eye site because of their over reading habit. What you told is correct.

Hi john, It is a lot similar to my family where everybody is seen with a book while they are at home and relaxing ! I too sleep with a book in hand and so do my children lol...I feel that when you have a reading habit , there is no question of boredom in life - thanks a lot for your views and have a great day

I encourage them to read, but I don't force them to. that would turn it into a chore, and I don't want it to be a chore for them.

I think that teaching children to read is very important. you can't have a good education without reading well. i have always done whatever I could to encourage good reading habits in my children. @monkeylong (3139)

As far as I am concerned, I think I am a book lover ,who have read a lot of books during my childhood. The way I can enjoy reading so much may be that I can pay fully attention to the book that I read.In that way, I can lose myself in the book, which I think can be a special way to make myself have a good reading habbit in my childhood life.

Hi monkeylong how are you and how is the weekend ? thanks a lot for your response
Once you cultivate the reading habit it normally stays with you. We would like to collect books and read books. In fact once you have a collection of books at home, the children and other members in your home too start developing a reading habit - all the best and have a nice evening

well i do not have kids but i remember my father reading books all the time. he was member of india today book club and i still remember a small magazine coming to our house which contains a brief description of thousands of books each placed category wise and i used to look at it and read the reviews or the outline of the books. he encouraged me to read books, started first from the adventure books of Enid Blyton and later on a gift in the form of alchemist by Paulo Coelho. after that there was no steeping back and there is nothing else which i am interested in other than books.

Hi pankaj, nice to know your views and I too am of the firm opinion that we need to cultivate the reading habit at home or at school.Earlier there used be a library and reading period for children, at least when I was studying we had it 3-4 times a week and we were able to borrow books from the school library. Now there is no such activity in most schools, so it has to be developed at home - all the best and happy mylotting

I don't have kids, but I can talk about my experience in being a kid. My mom read to us, bought us books, sometimes on just regular days, and we saw her reading a lot. I became a reader -my Christmas lists are still mainly books. My brother not so much. Most of the books my mom bought for him, I ended up reading. Although he did read all my Babysitter Club books. Also, I don't know if this still happens in schools, but we had the catalogs of books that were delivered to the classroom that the kids could order from. And I had a teacher in sixth grade who read to us for a few minutes a day. I actually discovered some favorite books through those reading times.
Whenever this topic comes up, I really only have one thing I firmly believe. Reading should be presented to kids as something they'll want to do. Rather than something they should do.

Hi Angel, I can relate to that. When there is an elder in the house who has a reading habit, the children automatically develop a liking for books.Nowadays in most schools, there is so much to cram into children's mind that such pleasant activities as reading and circulating books have been done away with ! I personally feel that initially we have to cultivate the reading habit in children by story telling and introducing the children to different kinds of books. Whether they develop it as a serious habit is left to them, but that initial effort is necessary to make children who are on the borderline to get to like reading ..thanks a lot for your response and have a nice evening

I agree with you.
When I was at school I struggled to read and write, as the teachers never really spotted that they was failing certain pupils. Once I moved due to the issues I had at that certain school, I quickly learned many new things and this improved my thoughts on school. It was cool, fun and I enjoyed going. I picked up how to read within a few months and by year 6 I had caught up with most of my class. I've always had this view with my own children, as I read to them every day and they enjoy being read too. My wife and I sit down with them, play games like "What's this animal" and make the noise so that they learn what certain animals do.
The stage I'm at with my son is trying to get him to spell his own name and others. (He can now spell his name)
Hopefully I can get him interested in trying to learn to read, he's always been ahead of his age and I'm hoping by time he's five he will be able to read certain words properly as he can recognize certain words already.

Hi joey, Thanks a lot for your response ! Yes as you yourself have experienced there is a definite connection between reading and academic brilliance , and here I am not talking about marks. That is got easily, but being able to shine and be an all rounder is something else - I am sure with time your son will be very smart and will develop a liking for books esp since you are both being so careful in grooming him - all the best and have a great evening
