A Lucky Trick or "Treater"

Several years ago when I lived with my parents, I started answering the door on Halloween because they were too tired to do the trick or treat thing anymore. There are a lot of kids in their neighborhood, and it was an all night thing. So one Halloween I thought all the kids had finished, when a few more knocked on the door. I gave the two the rest of the candy I had, and they turned to leave. Right when they were getting ready to walk off my lawn, a little boy ran up to the door yelling "Wait! Wait!" I looked down at him as he held his bag out for candy, and I felt so bad. I didn't have any candy left! So I looked at him, paused, and told him to wait a second. I ran to where I had left my purse, and pulled out a five dollar bill (I had no one dollar bills). I told him I didn't have anymore candy, but would five dollars be okay? Boy did his face light up! He went after the other two little boys calling,"Guess what I got?! You'll never guess! I'm rich!" I'll never forget that. Back then I was going to college full time and had a part time job. Which explains why it wasn't a big deal to me to part with five bucks. Do you guys have any cute/scary/funny Halloween antics to share?

Not really.. I don't do much of the handing out candy thing. I didn't even buy candy this year. We had 1 knock on the door but ignored it.. then went out for our own trick or treating. There's this guy in our neighborhood where we trick or treat at who walks around dressed up like Mike Myers, carries a big ole (fake) knife and just stares at people. It's really creepy, but funny. He doesn't mean no harm.. does it every year.. gives the little kids a wide berth.. but scares the crud out of older kids. So hillarious! Oh.. and I saw the coolest thing this year. 4 teenagers (older teens) dressed up like the Mystery gang from Scooby Doo.. they were just missing the dog. I thought they were awesome! Most older teens have such stupid costumes like a mask and a t-shirt and they call it a costume, pfft. These guys were great!

Superhero family - my trick or treaters
Hubby and I do not dress up.. I suppose if we had the money for costumes for ourselves we would, but it's hard enough coming up with 5 costumes for our kids. We had a superhero family this year.. 2 batmans, a batgirl, and a superman.. I don't know what my oldest was, he got a weird mask and black cape.. but it looked cool. Here's a pic of my kids from yesterday.

My daughter and her cousin went trick or treating on Sunday night and they too received five bucks from someone who had run out of candy; they were so excited even though they had to split the five dollars! People are very giving in regards to Halloween considering that it is not even an Australian celebration. The girls were door knocking for a long time and only one person refused them. They had a lot of fun and of course when kids came to our door we couldn’t very well say no! It’s all good fun...

I would have guessed Germany. But maybe I think of Germany just because they have the Octoberfest or something.

We used to dress up at work for Halloween. I found a pattern for a shark costume...well I wore it to work then when I handed out candy I wore it for that...well I had one little guy take one look at me....screamed and ran back to his parents..totally terrified! He wouldn't come back up to the house for any candy either....his dad came up! LOL...it was hysterical....his parents were even laughing.

my late hubby loved Halloween. we always dressed up to hand out candy. one year, he got this really scarey, terrible mask. the older kids loved it. then a couple little girls came with their parents and they screamed and cried. hubby took off that mask and never wore it again he almost came to tears himself. Kids so loved him. until this year, i was pretty down on Halloween, as it reminds me to much of hubby and his delight in it. but this year when the babies came by it made me love it again. see my avatar.

The last time I went trick or treating, was while I was in high school. I went with a girlfriend who had graduated the year before, and was in college. Being an affluent, college town, most people didn't mind 'older' kids coming to their doors. We had a great time until we came to one house, where the owner wasn't too happy about getting older 'customers'. When he angrily awked us if we were in high school, my friend sweetly answered, "Heck no, we're in college". If I ever go trick or treating again, I'm coming to your house...lol.

This is awesome, and like others have stated I am sure the other boys wish that they could give the candy back and get money like this. Depending on how many yrs. ago this could have been a lot of extra $$ for this boy, and I am sure since you can still remember it the memories are priceless.

That's a cute story. I don't really have one like that. We did always go to one house that gave out tooth brushes each year. Found out later it was a dentist. One house in our town gives out juice boxes and sodas. The kids like that.

Oh Ambie that was so sweet of you and yes I can well imagine the little Boys Face The only one I remember is when my Daughter was about 5 and every time I would pass the bag of the Sweets to the Children that came round, she would take them back of them again, screaming they where hers I then had to fight her for them to give back to the Children, who watched in wonder lol Yes she did have her own but she did not want to hand the other ones out either

My best Halloween memories are from when my Nephew was little and every year I bought his costume and would take him trick or treating. It was a great time for us and I love remembering them. He's older now and does his own thing. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

What a lovely story. You are so kind. The trick or treaters came last night but my GD was not there so thank God I kept back half of the candy. Sure enough she turned up an hour later with anther set of kids so I had enough to give everyone. I would have felt terrible if I hadn't any so was so glad that I swooped up half and shoved them in a panic in the fridge

My parents were married on Halloween...yes, I'm not kidding. So every Halloween, us four kids would have to leave early to Trick or Treat and return home by 6:30, so my parents could go out on their anniversary. A neighbor knew that was our routine, and feeling sorry for us (I guess), when we came Trick or Treating to his house, he'd give each of us a silver dollar (no other kids got dollars). We were so excited, we'd trade masks and run to his back door and he'd always say, "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?". We'd answer, "No", and he'd give us another silver dollar. We were rich! After leaving his house, we had just enough time to get a little candy, but then it was time to go back home to hand out candy to others. We loved that old man, but dang, I can't remember his name.

My house is located in a little community where it is not gated but all the houses are really closed to each other, one way in and one way out community and my house is smack on the corner meaning it is the most common house to ring the doorbell which sucks because I have to buy lots of candy! I swear a lot of people repeat to my house and I had to buy $50 worth of candy this year! Last year, I ran out of candy and I spend $30! I only give one candy per child too. It is crazy.. but when I was younger, years ago- the house I went to, the guy dumped his piggy bank into like a bowl and he'd just scoop the bowl of change and gave it to us because he was like I'm a doctor, I don't want you to get cavities! LOL.

My wife and I always take the kids trick-or-treating so no one is at home to pass out candy. This year my mother-in-law was there so we bought some candy for her to pass out. We went on our way and after about an hour we came back home because the kids were getting cold and tired. We got home and there was still about an hour for trick-or-treating and we were running out of candy. My wife said we would just turn our light off so the kids would not come to our house. My 3 kids said that was not right because some kids might come to the door wanting candy that did not have much in there bag. They decided that they would go and give some of there candy to any people that came to the door. I thought that was really nice.

I ran out of candy one year so I popped some popcorn and handed out baggies of that and had kids coming back two or three times, telling me they wanted more popcorn. LOL Anyway, my "fondest" memory was the first year I actually decorated outside for Halloween. Of COURSE, the scarier the better, right? I made a headless man and had him lying on our front porch opposite the front door. Everything went very well UNTIL.... I heard a little girl screaming her head off (HA! okay, pun intended). I went out to the porch to find a young girl, about 7 or 8 years old, clinging to the porch railing as far away from my "dummy" as possible, screaming and crying because she honestly thought it was a real man with no head. I had to prove to her that it was just a dummy by pulling some of the stuffing out. Geez, I wanted it to be scary but not TERRIFYING! I ended up giving that little girl a giant handful of candy. Now that I think back, I don't think she came around on Halloween after that year. Another year, many years later, I had a friend of mine get out on the porch roof, holding a ghost I had made out of black cloth with a string tied to it's head so it could be dropped and pulled back up. (You couldn't see it coming because it was dark out at the time.) While they were walking toward the house, he would throw the ghost down on top of the trick or treaters. It scared the poop out of them! Of course, I told him that he wasn't to throw the ghost down if the kids were very young. I didn't want to scar them for life.

That's a really cute story. I could just imagine that little boy's reaction to his "treat". But this really reminded me of some Halloween memories from when I was younger. My friends and I had this one house we went to every year because the lady gave out the best treats. She lived in a part of town that wasn't too popular with trick or treaters so she never got a lot of kids coming by. Anyways, she always gave us a giant size candy bar, a can of soda and a $1 bill. We were always super hyped because $1 was a lot to us in those days. That dollar could get us two ice creams whenever the ice cream truck rolled by. Another lucky incident I had was when this lady gave me a bucket full of candy. I started trick or treating late (I was sick and sitting in the car most of the time). The lady looked in my pumpkin pail and noticed I had a few pieces of candy in it. I told her that I was sick and wasn't participating much in the trick or treating. She was sympathetic and the next thing I knew she dumped her entire bowl of candy into my pail. Then she told me to relax and since I now had a lot of candy. I was really really happy even though I couldn't eat any of the candy I got.

I'd have been like, "Heck ya!" lol. Lucky he didn't send in the troops. You may have had lines of kids at your door after that!
