Good or evil?

According to Google figures the average person in the U.K. spends around 23 hours a month on Facebook. That is a fair amount of time. Personally, although I am a member there, I don’t have much of an appeal for Facebook. We’ve all heard some horror stories such as affairs being discovered and jobs being lost because of too much information posted on this social site. On the other hand there are plenty of feel good stories of folks catching up with long lost loves and family... So what is it about Facebook? What is the appeal? Is it really a great place to be or is it a rather dangerous and overly exposed place to go to? What do you think? Facebook-good or evil?

Twenty three hours a month on Facebook. a shocking truth. That's why Mark Zhucherberg can be a young millionaire in just several years... Facebook now a day became our identity. Now, we don't ask what is your phone number, but what is your facebook. See, how the world is changing. Facebook became our image in digital version.

That is so true! My sister was overseas not long ago and befriended some people who wanted to get in touch with her when they got home and indeed they asked her for her Facebook name instead of her phone number or email address! The world is surely changing. Great response, thanks siememsLot!

Well personally i use facebook to and my relatives and people that move away it is good to be able to keep in touch with them. so i think it is a very good thing yet in some ways it is not a good thing such as the people that spend since they get home from work to ten thirty at night playing farmville, and farmtown, and mycafe, and probably fifty more games on facebook that people get obsessive with and dont have a life. i know some of the times i am like that where i get obsessive with the games but i get over it pretty quick. Over all i just think it depends on the type of person you are if facebook it bad or not. If you use it for what its made for and socialize with people that you cant visit with, see and know whats going on in there life on a day to day basis then facebook is the best thing in the world. But if you have know friends on facebook and all you do is play games for 10 hours a day and you are sucked into the facebook addiction then facebook is a bad thing. Facebook can like i said be a addiction and you may need to get away from it. I hope my responce has helped solve your question. Thanks!

Yes it has thank you. It is all too easy to lose touch with reality and become addicted to what you can do on facebook and it is a matter of adequately balancing your life and not forgetting the people in your offline world! The thing I wonder about is the communicating with friends on a public forum. I know we do that here too because if it wasn't for MyLot the majority of us would not have met but to have a best friend that you could see face to face but you choose to communicate with publicly is strange to me. Thanks so much for a great response ncoffey98!

I like Multiply better. I think it's easier to use. I go to Facebook, because everybody seems to have chosen it, friends and family both.

Oh..I don't know Multiply...Might check that one out...Most people I know have a facebook account and it's funny to me because we all have each other's phone numbers and email addresses anyway so we rarely 'speak' via facebook..Pointless really...Thanks Dawn!

I'm the member of facebook and i like this site very much. But i don't like to spend too much time facebook. It is waste. No benefit from facebook. I'm money motive and so i want more money than more friends. So i like to be in mylot.

I prefer MyLot and it's not just because they pay us here. It is more user friendly to me and the new friends I made here I would not have met through facebook. I have a love of writing so this site is ideal for me. I have fun here while earning pocket money for myself; what more could I want? Thanks for responding Jiabsa!

it is just the way we look at it. i think we should not judge anything as a good or evil but rather concentrate on the fact behind each thing and try to make that thing better and more purposeful. just like alfred nobel has discovered dynamite not for destruction but for prosperity but atlast he had to seek out other option in the form of his will,.

I gather it does depend on how one uses it I guess. It has been good for some and it has put them in touch with long lost friends but in other ways I have to wonder in regards to its security and the negative effect it can have on one's information being open to the world but I suppose we know that when we join don't we? Thanks for responding pankajgarg!

I'm a very active facebook-user, and I think it's a great invention. I can communicate and see their updates, even if they live far away. I have also found some old friends from when I was 8-10 years old, so for me facebook has been very positive. But I can see why it can be bad, if people write too much on the site, then it can be a problem, which leads to something bad, like losing your job, losing friends or something. But if you use it wisely, then it's very very good.

Yes, it's all about balance just like most things in life...Sometimes a good thing can be taken too far and it can turn nasty or dangerous. Personally I prefer MyLot to facebook and, because time only permits me one social site, I will stick to this one although I do have a facebook account. Thanks for responding NicoZieg I appreciate it!

Well, that is the Truth. There can be a lot of Good and evil that comes from being a member of Facebook, and the things you do or do not share there. I have heard it can also prevent you from getting certain types of jobs as well. I am careful what I ever post on Facebook and wonder why some of the people share some of the stuff there that they do. Personally Twitter now is no better. I guess if you want to share your filthy laundry with everyone it is your choice?

I agree! I don't know why some people share so many personal details on social sites. It's one thing to discuss your issues like we do here as it may help others too but to post personal pictures etc. is too invasive for me. I like to use Facebook to say hi to my cousin overseas and that's about it. Thanks for responding KrauseHome.

Hello Paula. I haven't joined facebook from the start, i think only this year i actually created an account there even if i knew about it for a while. I think it is no worse than any other social site if you think about it. As for people loosing jobs, or affairs being discovered, it's their fault, not the site's , for not keeping their mouth shut :) I am sure, that such things could have happened on any other social site, you know the internet is wide, and a simple search on a specific line, or a name can bring up many results, and not just from facebook.

I actually heard it named before, never checked it out though. They are growing like mushrooms now, everywhere, all kind of social sites, one better (or worse) then the other. Well i am just 23 years old, but sometimes i feel strange because on my youth, we just went out and played with the ball, or visited a park. Nowadays, the kids meet online and they rarely have time for actually meeting in real life. I don't condemn the internet or something, or meeting people online, but one should always have time for his offside life as well.

I do agree that it is not the site but the people using it! It amazes me when I look back to my younger years and there was no cell phones or computers and my life went on but now I feel as though I would be very debilitated without those things and my nine year old does not know of life without technology; she's already asked me if she can join Facebook and when I told her she was not allowed to yet she joined BBratz instead which is a social site for children. I have investigated it and it's 100% safe but a 'social site for children' do you believe it?

This does not surprise me at all. But I think this is not a very good thing, It's not completely bad, but I think people spending 23 hours a month on facebook could have spend this moment making friends in the real world.

I agree. Twenty three hours a month is a long time to be on the one site and I do think there is an addictive side to Facebook but the same could be said about MyLot too I guess! I suppose it is up to the individual to find a balance in life. Thank you for your response reploid, I appreciate your view.

Thank you. Well, it is obvious that 23 hours is too much. Because if you calculate the time spent during one year it would be like 52 days on facebook per year.

Well, i used to spend more time using the facebook applications and the effect is negative. I got less sleep and time to eat. And oh! It caused and issue between me and my partner. When it comes to posting personal information, i don't. I leave it blank and i didn't used my last name so i can avoid people who wants to destroy my reputation. I think i only have less than 40 friends. i made the account last year only cause i got no interest in social networking sites because i'm a victim of previous site.

I find that I don't enjoy facebook all that much. I have very few friends because a lot of the people I know who belong to this site I see in the 'real' world anyway so it is pointless to communicate through a website! If it effects time with your loved ones it is not a good thing...Thanks for responding simonlee, appreciate it!

It depends on how you see it, and how you gonna use it. Some scam might be discovered from this social network sites, and you might be fall into those traps. If you only simply trying to connect with all your good friends, that is a great place to be. I like it too, because I saw a lot of my friends there, especially my co - workers too.

I prefer MyLot to Facebook because I find myself bored on FB whereas here I can discuss issues and make friends as you mentioned and fact that we get paid as well it is a definite bonus! I gather from the responses I received here that it is not so much Facebook that is evil but the way people use it. I appreciate your response, thank you Ilbo1981!

I too spend a lot of my time on Facebook and using its applications, I think it is good if used in limits like average usage in UK but if it is like me, more than ten hours per day then it is evil. We get a lot of informations and other related stuff even videos from different user which hurts us, people dont think whether my video ll hurt some one or not but they are just publishing that thing I think it depends on user how much he is using it and what sort of information he is interesting in, it can be evil or good, depends on our own interest...:)

Ten hours a day is a long time on one site! You are right in saying that it does depend on how it is used and how long for. I personally don't like facebook all that much; it just doesn't appeal to me as much as MyLot does but I haven;t tried any of the games yet! I like it because it's so much easier to get the news out to my family on what's going on. Say my mom goes to the hospital, I can post it on facebook and my mom's side of the family will get the news at one time without my having to be on the phone all the time and instead, I can be with my mom during her time of need. Or I could post something else that's going on such as our God kids or something good or bad about something else. I'm not on there much either but when I do need it, it's a good tool to use.

Now there's a positive way to use facebook! I guess it's handy for communicating quickly to a number of people. My sister in law did that after she had her first baby and posted a lot of photos on facebook for all of us to enjoy and share! In cases like that it is a most useful tool as you say. I have received so many requests from friends and relatives to join but I have not done so. to buy with two jobs really and My.lot is enough for me. I was horrified to find out that my nine going on ten GD does have an account. I think that this is much too young. I do not see the attraction honestly. I have heard many a hair raising story as well and so have no desire to join. But I suppose that if I was retired or something then I would be tempted to join. I don't know

That is the thing too cynthiann you need to have plenty of time to keep up with tall the different social sites out there which is why I prefer to stick to one which is this one! I am on facebook because my girlfriend talked me into joining and I have caught up with a long lost cousins and old friends but I have no real desire to chat to them via facebook. I would rather phone or email. My daughter who is almost nine has been told she may be allowed to join when she is in high school and that is a big maybe! I would rather she came here then...Thanks for the response!

I think that facebook has the potential to be either. I think that over exposure can be a dangerous thing anyway and then when it is to goodness knows how many people..there ya go. It would be ok for someone that needed exposure...ie. artist, muscician, someone like that. But for someone that works with gossips, it could be an open door for conversation.

Yes too much information could be a dangerous thing and I do wonder about facebook's security. I guess it depends on how you use it and how much of yourself you're willing to expose. It is certainly good for those who want to be seen! Thanks for the response Jen!

I think that the whole Facebook experience varies from person to person depending on who you are. My Facebook experience and my whole profile would look completely to another user who was more social or playing lots of games. I tend to use it for sharing links to my business or other helpful things that I like to share. I also use it to keep in touch with old friends, but I never do anything silly or unprofessional on there as I use it so much for business promotion. So Facebook is good for me, but if I were to do silly things on there and waste time playing games or indulging in their silly applications, then it could be considered as evil in my opinion.

Yes, I agree that it depends on how it is used. For business promotion I would imagine Facebook would be very useful. A friend of mine knows a young man who literally lives for Facebook. As soon as he comes home from work he is there until all hours everyday and that is not so good, I suppose at least he goes to work! Thanks for responding Bill!
