Pressure cooking

I read an article in my Hobby Farms Home magazine over the weekend about cooking with pressure cookers. It sounded very interesting as we are always running here there and every where. I have also seen them used on TV on the cooking shows. Does anyone use them? Are they safe? Can you get a good one for a good price or are they like $100 or more? What do you cook in them? I have heard some horror stories of them exploding. Is that true?

Well. we Indians use only pressure cooker to cook most of the dishes. its quite safe. the exploding part is due to old worn out gasket or the safety valve.
we use this cooker to cook rice, vegetables, and pulses.
i even bake cake using a pressure cooker. its very useful, it saves cooking gas and time. the cooked food is also very healthy.

I don't have one but I've been curious about them. I figure anything that can make things go a lil faster & use less energy would perhaps be worth a try. The only problem like any is there's always a ton of gadgets for the kitchen but my kitchen isn't getting any bigger.

ALOT OF PEOPLE DO USE THEM BECAUSE THEYcook so much faster than the normal way but i have never used one & i have been cooking a long time. I just prefer the old fashion way of cooking myself. Did u make the green tomato relish i sent u the recipe for. Never heard from u so wasn't sure whether u got the recipe or not.

We had snow and what I had on the vine went bad, but it is in my folder for next year. I did pass it on to my uncle in Florida. I will ask him. I love to cook but our schedule is just getting so busy.

Green tomato relish? Sounds interesting... as we had quite a few green tomatoes this fall and not sure what to do with them as they were too small to make fried green tomatoes.

Pressure cookers huh? I haven't heard of those since mom had one when I was knee high to a grass hopper. I went online to check out prices and see how much they have changed and it doesnt look like they have. Just be careful and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS before using. Mom's blew up on her! Had beans everywhere!! Here is a link I found:

I remember my mom using a pressure cooker when I was little and it terrified me. This was one of the really old ones with the weight on top that made a lot of noise.
For years I put off buying one but bought one about a year ago and am very pleased with it. The new ones are much quiter and easy to use.
Mine was one of the more expensive ones - stainless steel and made in Germany - but I'm sure if you shop around you might be able to find something in your price range.
The new ones are pretty safe as long as you follow the instructions. I use mine a lot especially for cooking whole pulses like chickpeas and butterbeans. It takes very little time and cooks them really well 20-30 minutes instead of well over two hours by conventional methods.
The only one I have heard of exploding was when a friend's dad was using it to try to make gin. Really, that was only because he was using it in a way he shouldn't have been!
