Do You Find Hair-Straighteners A Bit Of A Pain To Use?

You know how it is. At the hairdressers the lady always asks if you use straighteners. I always reply, "yes, but I'm not very good with them" to which she laughs and does a tremendous job of straightening my locks without much effort at all.
Now, last Saturday I decided to dig out my straighteners, for the first time in ages. I've also got this spray that protects the hair from damage when the straighteners are being used.
With the house being like it is (sh*t) I can't sit in front of the dressing-table as there is no electric socket nearby so I have to sit on the bed and straighten "blind" which, obviously isn't ideal.
After a while I realised that my hair was indeed getting straighter but was perturbed to realise that it looked bloody greasy. Why is that? you may or may not ask. Well, it was due to the spray that I have to use so my hair isn't damaged by the straightening. Well, that's what I reckon anyway.
Does anyone else have this problem? Do the right things and still end up disappointed at the end results?
Should I bother straightening my hair tomorrow or give it up as a bad job? Any tips would be much appreciated.

Hi Janey,
I don't often use a straightner because I think they can really damage your hair. My hair is pretty straight anyway but the straightner does definitly give it a different look. Besides all that, I find it really awkward to use. I'm sure it is just me because my daughter seems to be a pro. I don't know about the spray you are using but I know that a lot of these products tend to make my hair look greasy. I use them sparingly. One thing that at least for me would be key in doing anything with my hair would be a mirror! I would find a way. What about an extension cord so that you could still sit at your dressing table? A few years ago, when all my girls were home, I did not have a bedroom and we had only one bathroom for all of us to share while getting ready to leave the house. Ya...it was fun...interesting anyway. I got myself a portable, light-up makeup mirror. While the girls were getting ready in the morning and arguing about the bathroom etc, I had my handy-dandy mirror set up on the kitchen table. I could do my hair and make up right there and be done with it. I had all my make up in a box that could easily be stashed in the clost along with the mirror until the next time I needed it. Sorry I couldn't help you out much with the straightening tips but I'm in the same boat and will be reading your responses for tips myself.

You are right my friend. I really do need a mirror. There is a mirror on the dressing table far away in the corner but it's part of the table so I can't remove it..and anyway, if I could remove it and place it on the chest of drawers next to my bed, it would interfere with the shelf above! Can't win!

I believe the spray stuff you used has to much oil in it causing a heavy residue onto your hair. Then by straightening it with heat causes your own natural oils and the spray oils to be a bit too much.
So I would continue straightening it but try something with less oil. I use MegaSilk Olive Silk Elements, as it protects and does not contain oils. Makes my hair soft and smooth as silk, well this is what the bottle says but it is so true. The bottle is like three bucks at Sally's beauty supply.
See I have long hair way down my back so protection while straightening is a must for me.

Thanks for that. Is it possible to straighten hair whilst it's still slightly damp, without putting anything on it at all?

If you do you risk damaging and drying out your hair.

I have never deliberately straightened my hair, so I am not sure what to say. I decided to start coloring my hair again for the first time in about three years. The product I used this time seems to have straightened my hair. It feels soft and silky as well. This product had a pre treatment to condition the gray to take color, and then it came with a special conditioner to use after every shampoo. I was not trying for a straight effect, but I think it looks pretty good. Maybe you used too much of your spray and that is why it looks greasy.

Yes, on the bottle it doesn't really give me a clue as to how much of this spray I should be using. Next time I dig it out I shall use just a little bit, see if that works.
Thanks.

well its hard... i understand that, really and know for sure too that it is really what we have to go through to be beautiful hehe same as with rebonding... it would take more than 5 hours to have your hair rebonded... and after that.. you'd have about 6 months or more of nice hair!!! =)

You're the second person that has mentioned "rebonding" and I'm ashamed to say I haven't a clue what that means!

i've always hated straightening my hair by myself. it's really hard. what i did before was have my hair rebonded so it stays straight for a long period of time. and it does stay straight for like about 6 months. but then again, you get it done in about 4-5 hours. but for me, it's better than straightening it out yourself. these days though, i haven't gotten it rebonded, since i tie it u at work anyway. it looks kind of a mess when i let it down actually. the bottom part is somewhat straight because that's the part that i got rebonded (i had it cut short when i got it done so i wouldn't have too tie it up at work) but the part where it grew out is a bit wavy. it would be better for me if they just all turn wavy. :)

Is rebonding similar to having hair extensions? I've not heard of that before.
Thanks for your response.

it's similar to relaxing your hair. it's quite popular here in the philippines. the stylists put some formulas on your hair. i'm not really sure what's in it, but it's quite effective.
