how aware are you of your food

By this discussion I mean when you have eaten how often do you stop to give thanks for every effort of both man and earth to give you what you have eaten? I do this each morning, I eat oatmeal, so I picture it being planted, growing, harvesting, milling, packing and going to the store where it is handled again before it ever gets to me. I do this for each thing I eat for breakfast. After a while I just play the pictures through my head for each item. What this does is ground me for the day and gives me the mind set to be thankful throughout the day. Of course I am not perfect and often forget and get so tyed up in the days problems that I loose awareness of others efforts. But at least I try.

This sounds like a wonderful practice. It also keeps down the habit of eating to fast and not knowing what is actually going into your body for fuel. I will try to think this way some myself.

I over the years acquired a penchant for tastes and over time and practice enable me to be very particular as to the taste of my food.

That is a nice thing to do Pat. I start rituals like that and I am usually pretty good until mid-morning and then I forget! I used to give prayers of thanks when I first woke up because if I left it until night time I would be too tired and stressed out to do it! I’m like you, I am not perfect but I try...

That is really a nice practice. However, if we were to really see how chicken, beef or any meat comes from many of us would vegetarian. I realize that it is probably what you have in mind. Your intent is more on appreciation. I do appreciate the food that we get and the amount of work put in getting us that food.

I'm not a sort of a man who care of the food. Yes, I do eat only when I remember. Moreover the nutrition, I don't care at all. I know that's bad habit, but I love that, lol. Seems that eating is wasting my time, though it is a must for me. It's fine, I'm still 21 and have little consideration of eating habit. But, when I grow elder, I must care of my food. If not, I will be in danger, lol.

I've lived for 77 years on the farm my Grandad purchased in 1905, and over the years, have grown much of my own food, as did my Grandad, and my father before me. Naturally I have always been very aware of the food I grow, and eat. So much so that through my Yoga studies I've become attuned to food, and its healthful (or unhealthful) Qualities.I attribute this ability to the fact that I am able abstain from regular visits to a medical Doctor. Although I am not affiliated with any Organized Religion, I am Forever Thankful to My God for the generous provisions He has made available to me. I do not pray over my food, because I carry that Prayer in my Heart Always!

Hi savypat, That is such a great idea and one that I've never though about before. I can see too how it would teach us to be grateful. Blessings.

My grandfathers were both farmers and had cattle, chickens and pigs so I'm very aware of my food! I don't visualize it as you do but I give thanks before every meal. I wish more people were aware of where food comes from. Most children these days think food comes from a store and not from the earth or living creatures. My son refused for days to eat meat when he was in grade school because I told him where it came from---he asked, what was I to do?

I am pretty aware of it now, but I used to not care about it at all. But as I get older, I have started caring more. I think that is a good thing though! So now I check the origins of the stuff I eat more carefully and also cook more and more stuff from scratch, in order to know exactly how it is made and what is in it.
