I can remember knitting mini stockings, for a few people and adding a few sweets,so that they could hang them on their tree for their children, also i did them one year for all the children in my sons class, that took ages.I was just sitting thinking of the things we made and there were even snowmen, santas, etc that we use to sell as well.Nowadays i do not knit, perhaps rather than just making cards perhaps i will do a few other things.

KNItting is something i wanted to learn because it's fun. I find knitted stuffs really nice and cute. I know it's hard work, but it's going to be worth it when i see the end product of it. There are many course here that teaches one how to knit. I will be joining one at the end of the year. I want to knit something for my bf when we are going to switzerland for holiday.

i haven't knitted some stuff for someone before, but ever since i have been giving cards and gifts. i like making cards and writing some wishes there. if i will receive it i will appreciate it more. sometimes there are things words are worth more than a mere gift.

My grandmother taught me how to knit, but I am not very good at it, and I haven't had that much practice. I guess one of these days I am really going to learn how to knit and learn it well.

I must admit I buy my christmas card, but you posting about making stuff at Christmas brought back a lovely memory. One year my dad made me a snowman made entirely of cotton wool. it was lovely and although it was made for me by him over 56 years ago, I was about 6, and my dear dad passed on in 1977, I still remember that snowman and the time and trouble my dad took for me. This was in the early 50's and people didnt take the time and trouble with christmas and the decorations they do now. A very lovely memory Also I still have a calender and a origami star made in 1973 by my son! And yes the star still goes on the tree even now.

I love doing homemade things for christmas. Was raised on it and did it for years. I particulaly liked doing the huge tray/basket of baked goods for each family. However, i don't do crafts any more. One year...all year, I crochets twin bed sized afghans..one for each family and one for my dad and one for my mom - that was 5 afaghans I made that year.I was so proud of them and had used so many intricate and decorative stitches (I loved the shadow box stitch!) I gave one to my brother, my sister and my other brother, mom and dad. And made them in colors to match their living room as I figure that would be where they would use them. I even went to each house and took a look for colors and all. The one brothers wife...she is rather snooty, handmade isn't good enough for her so she gave hers to her mother and i saw it on her sofa! The other brother's wife, was jealous so she gave theirs to their girls.. and I saw it on their bed all stretched out of shape and torn. My sister gave her to her dog for a blanket! My mom used hers for her daycare of children for them to cover with and my dads just laid folded in the corner.. for years. So, never again will I make things...at least for my family! But I am working with my grand daughters to make things for their parents this year. We are working on flavored hot chocolate gift bags. Good luck on you endeavors for handmade gifts!

i have just been reading all the comments to our friend jugs posting. How lovely of you, coffeebreak, to spend time and trouble making those lovely gifts and perfectly dreadful the way your gifts were treated. When I worked for age concern years ago, one of my dear lovely old ladies crocheted me a little pink doily for my dressing table. At the time, pink was not my favourite colour, but to this day I still have it on my dressing table. I still have crocheted shawls my little old ladies made me, and wouldnt part with them. I am not very good at making stuff but appreciate every thing that is handmade and given to me.Happy christmas and seasons greetings to you all and your families !! bit early I know xx

I went to baked goods after that and at least my brothers could enjoy that! When I was pregnant with my daughter 33 years ago, the "grandmother" of the church crochets a small blanket....I saved it and brought both my kids home from the hospital in it, used it and then 3 of my 4 grand daughter were brought home from the hospital in it and used it. now it is on my rocking chair and they call it the "nanny blanket" and they cover their legs when we read! Ton of memories in that beautiful little afghan!

That sounds like a really good idea, I have always wanted to try knitting but I do actually do cross stitch for my family. I make lovely little designs for pillow cases, picture frames I even did a throw for my friends wedding. I love doing all types of arts and crafts so I think this year I will try doing some knitting and see how it goes for the holidays.

I always make a few things for Christmas, usually knitted, but sometimes embroidered or needlepoint. My problem is that I don't think of the best things until right before Christmas, then it's either too late or I stay up way late every night for a week trying to finish them up in time! I went through a time when I didn't knit much, either, but it felt good to get back into it once I started.

I was just going through my handicraft papers and magazines and I came across something that gave me an idea! Knitting nice and warm socks for the coming winter! The gift would show that you care and that went into the trouble of making them!

I sewed together felt stockings for the roommate's family one year. I made cowboy boots for some of the men and girls. I made a tall Victorian type shoe for her mom and the lady across the street. I made tennis shoes for some of the boys. I kid you not, the tennis shoes had tongues and laces, so did the Victorian high top shoes. I'm guessing you could easily make little felt stockings with some sweets for family and friends in a fraction of the time it took me to make all those things!

Victorian Christmas card - Layered paper with fancy edges along with leaves etc.
I do something homemade for everyone in my family at Christmas...but doing cards is my favorite thing to do. Every years I make a few Victorian cards for people who are very special to me....Last year I made little containers that look like the little sour cream containers you get in restaurants and filled them with candy...this year it will be candy stick.

That is an entertaining discussion you've started, as I'm proud and enlightened by the work you've done. I personally don't know how to knit, but hire other people to do it for me. This Christmas I will be ordering a personally knit head cap that will stand the test of time. Selling knits isn't my expertise, as I sell services and knowledge more often than tangible products. Christmas is such a special time, and I hope to make more money than I spend by making use of my hobbies. Hope you have a great time knitting for Christmas, and may these works keep you and your family warm.

I used to make a lot of things, and I think I would enjoy doing it again this year, if I just could get organized. I do not knit, but I do crochet.

One year I made long knit scarves for everyone. I put the little fring on the ends. Everyone actually liked them, and they were super warm. I made myself 3 or 4 and I still have them. They feel so nice in the winter. I'm a scarf wearer anyway. Always have been. Probably cause I live in Chicago so long.

Jugsjugs, when I was around 12 years of age and my 6th grade teacher had the girls in my class to make a very large Christmas stocking with drawstring for our mom's and dads. That is how I learn too knit. I had fun making the stocking and I also have a very lovely memories of mom's face when I gave it to her. Now, the other side of the story, I have looked and looked for the pattern and I can't find it anywhere. Oh well, I have the memories. Maybe, one of these days, I will try to make up a pattern and see if I can come up with anything. Therefore, you are right about making special items for people you care and I hope you get back into knitting because it's relaxing, fun and the items you make for yourself or someone else. Also, you just might have a memory that you will never forget. Take care and have a wonderful evening Snow?
