I've been looking through the carving books at projects I might want to do in

future. They gave me 4 magazines the first night and 1 more another night. The things I'm most interested in are:
toothpick holders, sounds strange, but they had some cute Halloween ones of a pumpkin and Frankenstein as well as a pretty detailed Santa. A relief that looks likea cameo, so I'd like to learn how to take pictures and make them look like cameo reliefs. walking sticks or maybe cane handles, but I think I'd like walking sticks better. Chip carved plates with maybe an animal design in the middle and geometric chip carving around the outside, but the Celtic Knots also appeal to me. Christmas ornaments for a tree. I would love that. I can't see me doing big projects or things in three dimentions.
Right now, I'm carving a rock. My homework assignment is a mushroom. both of those are three dimentional, but not really with details like birds, bears, or turtles. You can't do a rock wrong really, but the mushroom. . .. Therefore I wanted to practice by making a rock first.
My brother would do the chainsaw carvings of bears and animals. He has done a rough outline, but he hasn't done any details. He did a great outline of his dog. I tried to get him interested in the class. He is, but he uses his hands all day long doing Mason work, so they're beat by night time.
So if you were to carve, what would you want to carve?

I would carve woodwork. DO something unique like the old 'dental work' on the Victorian homes across the courntry. We have people around here that do log carvings for entryways and such of bears, ealges and miscellaneous. They are done well for the most part. I like more intricate work myself.

I've got a long, long way to go before I can do anything like that. I'm struggling with the three basic knife moves right now. The levering (a push cut away from you), the stop cut (where you cut straight in so you don't end up splintering the wood far away from where you're cutting, so the cuts actually stop some where) and the pairing cut (that's my best, I've used a pairing knife a lot in my life, only thing I'm a natural at).
So far, I only have a regular knife and I just bought a gouge. For woodwork, I would need several sizes and types of chip carving knives and probably different sizes of v-tools and gouges. Thoses woodworkers of old learned for a long time before they did the Victorian houses. Now people have "cheater" tools that can copy with electric tools. If you ever watch the channels that have "This Old House' and "New Yankee Woodworking Shop", you will see that they take the stuff off the old houses and bring them places where they can copy the woodwork with electric woodworking copiers (not sure what they're called), but they're interesting to watch. They can do what old time woodworkers did in a matter of minutes-molding copiers and even mantel work ones.
We have the tree carvers, too. Many people actually compete during the woodmen's days for the prizes for their bears, eagles, etc. I'd like to do the Celtic Knots on round disks that are sometimes set into walls on cord wood homes up here.
You would love some of the really intricate scenes that people have carved into bars, cabinets, and doors. There is one of what looks like a reindeer carving on a background of stained glass that looks like a bunch of trees, a lake, and mountains in the background. I sooo love that door.

I saw a really cool rose carved into a door in the Redwoods. I even took a pic of it but it didn't turn out very good.

Yeah, it will be lots of fun. So far, I'm just working on my three ways to cut wood. Thsy gave me some wood to practice. I also have a progressive model of a mushroom to copy. Once I get the basics down, I get to choose my projects. So next year for the ornaments for X-mas. But for now, I can watch the others and dream.
