Texting impaired my literary skills?

Hi all just want your opinion if texting has somehow affected the way you write? I use to be proficient in spelling and grammar even when i was in high school and college , no doubt the cell phone or texting for that matter is very practical. I had just noticed that using it often seemed to impair the way I write or spell especially with the short cuts. I let my younger children use the cell phone but only if they promise that they spell words correctly even if it would cost me more cause it would be more advantageous for them in the long run. Is this a sign of changing times?

i do text with the whole word. just like i do here in posting in discussion. because of my phone is touch screen it is easier to type in the words and also because of the application in my phone called swype, i just slide my fingers across the screen and comes the whole word without difficulty. so much easier than actually to hit every single letter just to form a word.

Hi, louievill I do not do shortcuts when texting, thus, my writing skill has never been affected. I also have a hard time understanding text messages from people who do shortcuts. I think it's good that you make sure that your kids do not do shortcuts as well. Have a nice day!

I text the whole word when texting. I do not use short cuts, and that is important so that we will not forget how to properly use our language. I do not see the sense in having things short cut, its a lazy thing to do when you do that. WRU instead of WHERE ARE YOU? it maybe a long word to type but its the right thing to do. :) I do not like repeating myself so, I would rather type the proper way than to be misunderstood and ask me to type in again what I want to mean.

I don't have a problem with this, and I text almost daily. But my phone allows for only putting in part of a word and it finding the rest for you, but I don't use that feature. I type in the entire word, just the way it's supposed to be, and I never take any shortcuts. It hasn't damage my literary skills, I still write as well as I used to before I ever started texting.

I used to text words in full and natural form. Then i had to reply sooner, so i just cut down the words. And yeah, sometimes i would write 'dat' for that and 'wud' for would and things like that on paper and also sometimes here on mylot, lol. But i have gotten over it. Somehow, i have managed not to use that literature over here and on paper. I can type fast on my phone now, but the worst thing is that it keeps you glued to the tiny phone screen. I use my computer to send text messages from my phone and i find that much much more convenient !

I do think that texting does make people forget how to properly spell words because everything is abbreviated a lot. My friend has to remind herself not to use text speak when emailing people for her work.

I always use correct grammar and spelling when texting, or chatting on the internet, as I feel I would probably become braindead otherwise! My little sister, however, is 15 and she is constantly shortening down her words and now has difficulties spelling some of the most simplest of things. I once read a story that schools in the UK were considering letting children take notes in text speak, so it would be easier for them to revise. Surely this would make exams like English Language a lot harder though?!
