It's not really that beautiful in my opinion if I have to based on the subjects face value because it appears plain to me. However it's her smile that really looks mysterious to me. I think it's a captivating painting that is why it is very famous all over the world. And I think it also suffered many abused as well. the reasons were below. During World War II, the painting was again removed from the Louvre and taken safely, first to Château d'Amboise, then to the Loc-Dieu Abbey and finally to the Ingres Museum in Montauban. In 1956, the lower part of the painting was severely damaged when a vandal doused the painting with acid.[34] On December 30 of that same year, a young Bolivian named Ugo Ungaza Villegas damaged the painting by throwing a rock at it. This resulted in the loss of a speck of pigment near the left elbow, which was later painted over.[35] The use of bulletproof glass has shielded the Mona Lisa from more recent attacks. In April 1974, a handicapped woman, upset by the museum's policy for the disabled, sprayed red paint at the painting while it was on display at the Tokyo National Museum.[36] On August 2, 2009, a Russian woman, distraught over being denied French citizenship, threw a terra cotta mug or teacup, purchased at the museum, at the painting in the Louvre; the vessel shattered against the glass enclosure.[37][38] In both cases, the painting was undamaged.

I do find that there is some beauty in the Mona Lisa. It is true that there is something slightly mysterious about the painting and the woman in it. But it is done in a beautiful way. It is very alluring.

Some researchers have said that the mystery of her secret smile is in fact because she was pregnant. The person in the picture is not at all beautiful but the way the painter captures her smile and her features is truly what makes her magnificent.

Hi lyzabelle, thanks for sharing so much information. I really didn't think people could take out their anger at something so beautiful. As to me - I am not very good at English, I would have to find a word to define her beauty. You mentioned mysterious. I would add mischevious, enticing, and many many more words, and none of them would be perfect you know to describe that smile. Wish I had one like that. :)

Hello lyzabelle, Thanks for the history of this painting. You forgot to tell us that the Joconde was stolen in 1911 and came back to the Louvre in 1913. Beautiful or not, it is a fascinating painting like the author. There is something magic in Mona Lisa and in Leonardo, don't you think so ? Beautiful or not, she was the first person smiling on a painting : a true masterpiece !

I like its colors. But the Monalisa herself? Not really. You also have to point out that ALL masterpieces are being "re-painted" over the years to preserve it. Just like the case of Da Vinci's "Last Supper". It has been edited too much, that it looks different now.

i think what makes mona lisa painting beautiful is the mystery behind it. it leaves "something" in her smile! also, it's not only the painting but the age of the painting itself and the person of leonardo da vinci.

Yeah, I think it's the Mona Lisa's expression. Something about her says "I know something you don't know".
