What are your earliest Christmas memories?

Olivia and Isabelle - My youngest two grandchildren

My daughter sent me this picture today of my two youngest grandchildren Isabelle (just 3) cuddling her 2 month old niece Olivia. Looking at the picture and thinking that although it is Olivia's first Christmas this Christmas will probably be the first Christmas that little Isabelle will actually remember. That got me thinking about my earliest Christmas memory and I have a very vivid memory of when I had probably just turned 5( my birthday is just 5 days before Christmas) I had had my bath and was sitting watching TV in my PJ's, dressing gown and slippers when at the end of the news (guessing it must have been the 6.0 pm news, there was a picture shown of Father Christmas going down a chimney, and the news reader told all children that they should be in bed. I vividly remember dashing up stairs, not bothering with the loo or cleaning my teeth and jumping in bed complete with slippers and dressing gown and pulling the covers over my head - I didn't want to miss him!! What are your earliest memories of Christmas?

I would have to say that my brother proving that our parents were "Santa" and that there was no such thing as "Santa" - which is funny since he had his daughter convinced for YEARS after she should've known better! In fact, she knew the presents at her mom's came from her mom, but my brother found the 15 minutes that child actually fell asleep to put out her presents just before her 11th birthday!

Even though I am a hindu I studied in a convent school and so I am not new to christmas celebrations. But it was always in my school(few days before christmas) or at some friend's place. There was one year in which I was studying from a hostel and that was an unforgetable year for me. There were five hostel buildings altogether and each building had its own santa who would go to the other four buildings to give gifts. Since I was in the choir, I would always take part in the christmas carols and that used to happen in the night. Oh it was a wonderful experience! I still remember the days when everything from the pathway to the trees to every thing in sight was decorated with lights and other stuff! I miss all those days. For the very first time in my life, we bought a christmas tree last year and decorated it for my daughter. Just could not make out who was more excited, me or my daughter. Am looking forward to doing that this year too. And am planning on doing it every year henceforth.

The city close to where I live (Lancaster) is fairly small and there is an alley way there that leads to some flats and it is always decked out so beautifully with thousands of lights - it really does lift your spirits.

I don't remember a single one until in the 6th grade. We'd just moved to Ohio and of course...got hats and mittens and coats for gifts that year. I thought they were great, but the kids at school made fun of me. Next thing I remember is the following year when I fell in love with horses and asked for a horse model and got one that was clear and showed the insides of the horse. I put the plastic horse together nad never touched the "inside" parts! After than I don't really remember to many until I had my kids. now that I think about it...I wonder why that is that I don't remember them?

That is sad that the kids made fun of you, I can't see a problem with hats and mittens - I have always bought things like that for my kid and grandkids.

Haha, thats funny :) My earliest Christmas memory would probably be when I was four or five, and we were all gathered in the family room. For some reason, my dad decided to watch Jurassic Park on the day of Christmas (?), but we were all sitting there, focused on the TV. Back them, it was just my mom, my dad, and me, and they wouldn't let me watch some parts. I was really freaked out, but I had a lot of new toys (yay Barbies), so I was idly playing with them. I remember, quite vividly, of that new Barbie I got...it was a beautiful ballerina with a light pink dress. I was combing her hair and putting new clothes on her, while simultaneously watching the incredibly scary movie. Haha...good times. We're from China, so we back then, we didn't really know how to celebrate Christmas. We always opened the presents the night before, and the next morning, we would sleep in. I would be the only one who got presents, and I always got the toys I wanted. But as I grew older, I grew more and more disappointed with my gifts. Now that I'm older, I get gifts for my parents on Christmas, and now, thinking back to those first few years of my life, I realize how much I've grown...from being the only getting gifts from her two parents, to a teenager getting gifts for her (now huge) family. Man, times have changed.

When my daughters were small (they are now all in their 30's) it was Sindy dolls , cars and caravans etc that they loved rather than Barbies! Now like you it is them buying gifts for their children. Jurassic Park certainly sounds like a strange choice for Christmas Day but I expect it was THE big film of the time and televised especially at Christmas.

You know, I can remember a lot about my childhood, but I really can't remember a lot about Christmas. I don't know why. I remember every year going out and cutting our own Christmas tree down, I can remember Christmas dinner. I can remember every year going to my Uncle's house on Christmas Eve and spending time with my cousins. I also remember going to my Grandparents house on Christmas and driving them back to our house for dinner, but I can't really remember opening up any presents. I know we did get some, but I guess maybe I never got anything I really wanted..lol ... because it nothing stands out in my memory. That is odd that I can't remember the presents.

Which perhaps goes to show that the presents aren't as important as everything else about Christmas! Personally I prefer Christmas Eve to Christmas Day, I think it is far more exciting and you have the thoughts of the day to come!

Hi! I can still remember that when our parents are asleep me and my sister will go down stairs into our living room and check out the gifts underneath the Christmas tree. It's always cool to see who got plenty of gifts. ;)

That feeling when you see the pile of presents is really special isn't i!! We used to say to our kids that we had to get down first to make sure that Father Christmas wasn't still there - really it was so we could be in the room before them to see their little faces. That tradition carried on until they married and left home!

So many of them were spent traveling to family that nothing there stands out. I do remember the year my baby brother was born, and mom put him in a pink baby bathtub under the Christmas tree. He was born November 14. I had just barely turned four, so that is a pretty early memory for me.

At my earliest christmas memory i was about three or four years old. it was at my grandmother's house. i was sitting under her Christmas tree with a baby doll that walked. I can still see it when i close my eyes. often when i think of 'christmas, this memory pops into my head.

We are blessed with these happy memories aren't we? It makes me realise why we should do as much we can to make Christmas special for our kids, so they too can have pleasant memories in the future.

I cant remember how old I was in my earliest memory, I remember me and my sister opening a couple of presents and then there was a knock on the door, we opened the door to find that there were 2 toy prams with a doll inside for us, I remember dad said that santa must have forgotten to put them under the tree so just dropped them off! I remember being so excited before christmas day that it would take ages to get to sleep. Im still excited for christmas now, I have bought loads for my little neice (I dont have my own children so I get to spoil my sisters daughter instead) and I cant wait to see her face when she opens them!

Yes children really make Christmas special don't they?? I will always remember the first Christmas that my eldest child reacted to Christmas. It was the Christmas before she was two in the January and 'Santa' left her presents downstairs but a stocking on her bed. My husband and I were as excited as her ans we lay awake listening, waiting for her to wake. The we heard her from her room gasp 'He's been!' - it was a pure magical moment!!
