If you have seen the movie Shrek, you might remember him saying this phrase. It made me think and I ponder upon those words and then I realized that yes, a true friend can tell you everything even though it hurts! Only a true friend can do that because a true friend don't want you to go to the wrong path. A true friend will truly help you find your way even if it means he has to say cruel words to you. Only a true friend can tell you honestly without hesitation about your own faults. It totally agree with Shrek! Care to share your own opinion on this?

I think that there are times that it is best that you tell a friend honestly what things should be like or what they should not do.However i think that there are always a way that you can tell someone, mainly trying not to say things in a nasty manner.

as some people just wouldn't listen. they can hear but they won't listen. so, we have to consider being nasty and rude just to drill our message of truth into their heart. probably, before the other person gets hurt, the one concerned to deliver the truth has already been hurt.

There is certainly some truth to this. It is true that only true friends can be cruelly honest. To some extent to, family can also be cruelly honest at times as well, depending on the family and the family member in question.

I don't agree with this at all. I once heard someone say that 'honesty without tact is cruelty.' It's a skill-but one that must be learned- to get your message across in a way that causes the least pain possible. You can point out someone's faults to them, if you have a constructive purpose for doing so, but you must take the time to think how you are going to word what you say so the person will get your point without any, or at least without much, damage to their ego, or hurt feelings. With enough 'well intentioned, cruelly honest' words to a 'true friend', you might find that your 'true friend' starts giving you the cold shoulder.
