Snow days(or lack there of)

Every time there was snow in the forecast, everyone got excited, because there had to be a snowday, and we would not have to go to school. The thing was that school only got called off pretty much when the entire city got shut. So we had to brave some pretty bad weather. A twenty minute bus ride is not that fun, when the bus is not heated. And the roads are icy, so obviously you've got to take it slow. Still when I got a snow day during my school days, it wasn't like I could have done anything but stay in and chill.

It happened a few times in my childhood that classes got canceled because of the snow. I still remember how happy we were when we heard the announcement on the radio 
Most of time they didn't close the school and but sometimes there were only a few students and a few teachers.
Some years ago I went to school for adults. It was in another city and my friend and I always met at the train station in our city. One day there was a lot of snow and the trains were delayed. We waited for several hours and it was so cold. When we finally got to the school it was closed, so we had a wasted our time and energy. It turned out that they had been trying to call us, but we had both switched off our cell phones like we normally do before class. Next time I am not going to switch off my phone!

I would have been so upset if I had went all that way and it had been closed. Talk about a waste of time and energy. Yeah, I heard you, that would teach you not to switch off your phone.
