What kind of outdoor Christmas lights do you use--white, lots of colors, or NEON

Every year, my husband and I have a debate over what type of outdoor Christmas lights we should use. I favor the subtle all-white look, with a wreath and some red ribbon on the door. He LOVES flashy Christmas decorations, and would put out big neon signs, plastic Santas, blinking lights--the works! (I won't let him). We usually compromise and put out small multicolor lights--a lot of them! What kind of outdoor decorations and lights do you use?

Wow, since when did the hubby had a say about decors? Kidding! You guys are so funny, having a quarrel over lights. You must be a sight to see, spatting at each other over colors. Honestly, I'd go for the soft touch, one color motif. But when pressed for flashy, gaudy, stupendous, crazy, mind-boggling, mystifying, and heartwarming style, why not? It's Christmas after all, the more colorful, the merrier.

Well, it's more of an ongoing discussion--he will see someone else's gaudy lights and say wistfully that he wished ours looked like that! He wouldn't get to pick the decor, but since he buys them and puts them up, he does get to give some input!!

We haven't been putting up any Christmas lights for the last few years because my dad has been having back problems so he can't move around as much anymore. He was always the one that was going over the top and putting up lights and decorations everywhere. Back when he was able to, his preference was the strings that had the multicolor lights. He always said that it looks more festive and unique that way instead of a bit dull with the mono colors. He would set some of them up to blink at different intervals and he would also have the chaser lights wrapped up around the windows and such. As for outdoor decorations, he would have a few lighted up reindeers and candy canes leading up our walkway. On the door there would be a Santa Clause. He was never really into the decorations, it was all about the lights. Nowadays, we skip the light part and the outdoor decoration is kept to a minimal. We'd just have a Santa with a "Welcome" sign and another on the door. Most of the decorating is kept indoors now.

You know, I think it'd be funny to see my brothers bumble their away around this. That would be interesting. But that's a good idea. It won't be this year though, we'd have to do it next year. I have no idea where all our lights are stored, they are still in boxes somewhere from when we moved and I think it'll take too long to find them and dig them out.

Sounds like my husband and your dad are kindred spirits when it comes to outdoor lights! Maybe another family member can put up the lights for your dad this year and surprise him.

LOL! It took us three weeks to find our lights, and we're the ones who put them away last year! Have a wonderful holiday!

Sometimes I feel like the only ones I use are the strings where half of the lights work and half don't. Do you ever get frustrated with the temperamental nature of Christmas lights? At this time we generally use multi-color outside and on the tree. My wife will do some special areas in the house and she prefers all white. We used to do some trees with all blue. Blue is very different, but it can be neat. I would like to do something in purple, but we have never gotten those lights. We are still using the basic miniature lights. Have not made the move to anything fancier yet.

Thanks for the tip on purple lights. Maybe next year I'll do some snooping around after Halloween. Do have a wonderful day.

Sounds nice--except for the half working lights strands! We have that problem every year, too. You know when the easiest time is to get purple lights? Around Halloween--people now use purple to replace black for some Halloween decorations, like lights. You can probably get them very cheap after the season next year. Then you would really have different Christmas lights!

Purple is nice. Last year I put a small tree in the basement/den all in purple...I love purple but couldn't bring myself to do the big tree all in purple, it was just too non-traditional...despite my love of purple! It did look quite nice, though. I believe I did find those lights on sale after Christmas one year, people do not generally use purple so they usually still have those left.

I like to have a all blue Christmas light and mix together with the white flashy light. The combination will make them seem like the star flashing in the sky. I am already putting it up the at some of the trees outside my house. It looks pretty nice during at night when there are no light at all.

Hhmm. . .that might be a compromise my husband and I could both live with. Very wintery--sounds nice. Maybe I will suggest that next year (our lights are already up this year).

My parents don't put up outdoor christmas lights because they're getting older but when they did, it was just simple white lights & wreath on the doors. That's about it, nothing crazy or flashy.

I usually use all colored lights outside, and then white lights on the tree, which can be seen from outside. I have one white tree-shaped light sculpture outside, and white icicles around the garage, but the other lights are all colors. Usually I do not make them blink, aside from the ones in the window which are the only fancy ones I have, they do the random blinking/twinkling/"chasing" thing. I would not mind more lights if I had someone willing to go on a ladder and put them up...I won't do anything I can't do from the first step of my step ladder. (The garage was bad enough, as the driveway pavement is uneven so the ladder wobbles.) Happy decorating and enjoy the holidays!

Some years ago I went to the US at Christmas time and I was amazed at the amounts of outdoor lights of every house. All seemed wrapped in light and I saw that they were left on all night. We don´t do that in my country. We light modestly our Christmas tress and put the lights off when we go to bed. A couple of years ago, our Presiden asked us to start changing our normal lights for the ones that save energy. Some people did it and the amount of energy that was saved was awesome. I don´t think that Christmas is about lots of lights or about lots of presents. I may be old fashioned, but I still think that Christmas is about love. I am not a believer, but I like to celebrate the birth of a little boy that was born in a manger, a boy that made a big difference in the world.

We usually hang red lanterns with characters on our here, there is a light in the lantern, very bright and beautiful too. As of the outdoor,i would paint it with light blue or green colors, which might look fresh and new..
