Snow Days

Winter - shoveling out my FIL

We've been getting pounded by snow here in Central, NY. Monday morning I thought schools should have been closed due to the snow.. but our schools posted a 1 hour delay instead, with no morning preschool. Tuesday I wake up and there's again a 1 hour delay. So my kids are getting ready to go, and just about the time my oldest was planning to go out to his bus I get an e-mail saying schools are closed. I double checked on the news website and sure enough schools changed their minds and decided to close... unfortunately that news came a bit late as there were already children waiting at the bus stop. Today it was the same thing.. I wake up to hear schools are delayed 2 hours, but then around 8:30am they changed their minds and closed schools. Thank goodness they did because it's still coming down really hard out there! They say it won't be letting up anytime soon.. I wonder if the kids will have school at all this week. My poor preschooler hasn't been to school since Friday.. he's missing it so much! Do your schools close for snow days? Has your school ever posted a delay then changed their mind and closed the schools? If you don't get snow days.. when was the last time your school was closed on a normal school day and what was the reason?

Last year there were two snow days. There was no snow at home. There was no snow at the school. (Well it had all melted.) But there was snow a little higher up the hill, and there were some kids coming in from there. Therefore the entire district shut down. That's California for you!

Well in California we're afraid to drive in the rain, much less the snow!

I'm sure you're so unused to snow that a light covering would scare you. For me there has to be a foot or more so quickly that the plows can't keep up. Right now we've got a good 3 or 4 feet on the ground, but the plows are finally keeping up with it. Thankfully I live on a main road which is typically cleared quickly.

Wow.. your kids are lucky! LOL.. Here when there's a snow day it's because there's so much snow we're litterally afraid to drive in it.

I have heard that the snow is pretty fierce everywhere and especially in Europe.Well as I was born before TV let alone the inventions of computers our situation was different. My eldest sister trudged ahead making a path through the snow and then my second sister held onto the belt of the eldest sister's coat and followed. Then I took up the rear and held onto the belt of the middle sister's coat whilst trudging to school. Snow days? We only stopped school and they sent us home if the water in the toilet bowls had frozen over The classrooms were heated by a coal fire and of course teacher's desk was near the coal fire. We used to line outside the classroom early before school when school opened in September so we could get a seat near to the fire. Thanks for the memories.

Schools have certainly come a long way in a short amount of time. Thanks for sharing!

March 2008, my driveway - We had an ice storm that closed down lots of roads, broke trees, took out power lines. School was closed.
When I was a bus driver and my kids were elementary age we almost never had snow days. We only had rural busing and if the buses could get through we all had school. We had good buses, new ones, and we had good bus drivers. The reason given was that most parents did not have day care and we did not want to inconvenience them. Later, change in admin. and we had school called off based on a forecast, and by noon the snow had all melted off the road. Most recently, I was working in classrooms in a school district about fifteen miles away. We had a spring ice storm and that small town lost all power for the half of town where the school was. In fact a lot of small towns both east and west of us lost power, some for as much as two weeks counting clean up. I think where I was we only missed three days. The reason being given was that there was heat and light and food at school, kids were safer there than at home without any of that. If I can find the picture, I will post a view down my driveway that spring. Meanwhile, stay warm and cozy.

We had a similar ice storm back in like 02 or 03, many people were without power for a week or so. I can't remember if schools were closed for long or not.. it actually might have been during a school break to begin with.

Where are you at? My daughter is in Rome so I watch the weather all the time...I see Syracuse has had snow for like so many hours in a row without a break! Our schools do get snow days too. We used to go somewhat through the same thing with the exception of us having to hear it on the radio! It has to be pretty bad here for them to close school though....they lose too much state aid if they do.

Hey kats! Wow! I had no idea you had gotten pounded that bad! I guess that's because I don't know how far up your are, but obviously far from me because we didn't even get a flake yet. So how much snow have you gotten so far? Here in Westchester County they also start out with school delays, and usually close the schools soon after! But, they don't usually close for more than 2 days in a row. We haven't had any really "huge storms" for quite awhile!

I'm actually just outside Syracuse. The weather channel even mentioned our snow today! It stopped this afternoon so I had hopes that the kids would have school tomorrow, but the news just said we have more lake effect snow warnings until tomorrow at noon.. ugh!

Very rarely do we get snow days at our school for my son... we have had a couple but it has to be alot of snow before they do that. I am in Michigan, near Detroit, and there has been days where it has snowed and the roads were horrible and yet the schools stayed open....I dont rely on the school bus, I drive my son to school and pick him up every day. We havent had a day where they call for a delay...its either closed or open. They are calling for snow this weekend, we even got almost an inch over night last night, so I am wondering if we will have a snow day on Monday, especially since they are calling for artic freezing weather on Monday.... time will only tell. I dont think we have more than 1 snow day in a row....I hope your son gets to preschool at least once this week, I know my son (he's in second grade) misses his friends when he is off school for vacation breaks. LOL Happy Mylotting.

Our schools try not to close. Though it's a law that if it is 25 below with wind chill they have to close. They'll also close if they think the roads are too bad for driving.. better to keep the kids safe. We got around 5 feet of snow between Saturday and Wednesday.. so it was good that they closed. School was open and on time yesterday and today.

oh lord i remember snow days, when the kids would get up and say, mom, schools probably closed, then they would practicly be praying it would. they loved snow days and yes sometimes, (no email back then) they'd be waiting at the bus stop before the radio would report, no school. but they didnt mind coming back home just would keep saying, see, i told you. boy did they get upset when we moved to california and theres no snow days...lol. in '79.

Well I live in Texas and we are lucky if we even get snow last year it did snow and it was great to see all the Snow men built around on the streets in front of peoples houses! Usually here they only close schools and businesses due to if we have icy weather. Sorry your kids are missing so much school but I am sure they can make up for it when they return to the school. Have a good day!

You know, we live in the south where they will close down the entire city for just an inch of snow. That said, we had several sets of snow days last year because we had several 2-3 inch snowfalls. As far as posting a delay and then deciding to close school instead, in all the years that I am aware of, there has never been a time that something like this has ever happened here. What I do think is very nice with our school district is that they are on facebook now so we are able to find out the news a little bit quicker.

My area of the country has been pounded with substantial snowfall in the past few days. We had one 2 hour delay where i thought it would have been better to have a school closing instead. The following day was another 2 hour delay which turned into a cancellation. I can't recall our schools closing or anything except holidays and inclement weather.

How lucky people are on the other side of my world to have such snowy days Schools in here never close on normal days until and unless there is some politcal ruckus going on or we're facing excessive floods.great day.

I'm very sorry for your situation down there in Central New York especially your kids. Thought that only happens here in the Philippines during typhoon season. They will suspend school and the rains don't come, they declare there would be classes and it starts raining hard and floods knee deep. Just comes to show how unpredictable weather is. Your equipment in predicting weather is much much better there compared to our jurassic forecasting but it still happens everywhere. It was a big issue here mid this year where one of the bureau heads ended up being sacked from his position and a general plan to rehabilitate and upgrade the whole national weather station.

I live in a tropical country so there's no snow the whole year. It is just sunny or rainy weather. I've been wanting to see real snow at least once in my lifetime well, the real snow and not those indoor snows that you can enjoy during christmas season for people to experience and hold for themselves real snow but of course for a fee.
