Another big hole in the government

In the USA we have rules that you must license any motored vehicle that travels the public roads. And these are enforced by tickets and fines if you don't pay to renew the license when due. For for private aircraft you only register it when you first buy it. No one cares who owns it after that. Suddenly they have realized that there are thousands of private planes free to fly anywhere and no one knows who owns them. In a country that is becoming rabid about security don't you think this is a big hole?

Yea I agree with you savypat. Aircraft should be licensed just like any other motor vehicle. Also, this might be a big stretch, but some terrorists might be able to get some private planes and cause something like 9/11 all over. Even this might be a little too far-fetched, I'm just saying

Hi savypat, That is an excellent point that you make here and the same thing is probably happening in other western countries as well. Let's hope that the government moves quickly to correct this. Thousands of planes flying around and no record of who owns them sounds pretty scary to me. Blessings.

I guess, this is very common in all countries.. When we first buy a vehicle, it is necessary to Register it.. Only one time Registration is enough and the Insurance has to be renewed every consecutive year. This is the process in my place and it applies to any vehicle, whether it's Land vehicle or it's a sky vehicle....

you have a very good point there. Of course, automobile registration was mainly created as a form of income generation for cities and states. However, it has become a useful tool for law enforcement track down criminals who use be a calls in the commission of crimes. it would probably be a good idea to take a closer look at keeping better track of the aircraft in American skies .

I think not! This may have been done purposely to conceal property of the rich who would obviously be owners of these vehicles! Do not forget that we have a very double-standard system!

That's pretty alarming, considering that a little Cessna can fly over a major city and dump a load of germs and viruses any time the pilot wants. I've been wondering these past few years why something like that doesn't happen. Gov't regulation and registration is usually a bad thing, in my opinion, but it might be a good idea to keep a wary eye on our small airfields.

You’re right, it does sound like a hole in security. I would be interested to find out what the regulations are here in Australia...It seems incredible that once sold a private plane can belong to whoever and no record is begin kept in regards to the new owner...You learn something new every day!

That is one heck of a loop hole. I had no idea. It's something that certainly deserves attention.

I didn't know this. You would think after 9/11 this would have been rectified. See that is such a lack of security to me for a country who is always talking about homeland security. I truly believe this is a big hole in the security system of our country and very scary at that.

hi pat, you have a point there. there should be renewal of license every year just like when you own a car. and especially if the aircraft owner will sell that thing. ann

I never knew that was the case, and yes, it is something that is very scary to find out. In addition to the fact that it does bring fear to me, it also seems that it isn't fair that aircraft don't have to be registered and taxed on an annual basis because of the fact that is a lot of revenue that the states and national government could have that might help in this time of economic crisis. It most definitely is a huge hole in national security.

Well, I think you have a very good point out there. I am from the United States, In our country, it not very easy to buy a plane as an individual considering the cost. So, I think it is easier to monitor in our country. For country like yours, that is indeed something to worry about if assuming that anyone can just take ownership of the plane. So, I guess there has to an adjustment done to insure a safer environment considering the threats to safety nowadays.

Pat- Though this could raise alarms for the airways my thoughts are that it has been overlooked simply because of cost. Not the cost to license it but the cost to buy a plane. Not everyone and his brother can just go and lay down money for a plane in the same fashion they buy a car. Cars are used daily, easily acquired, and well there is a high turn over. Planes I would gather only ever see one or maybe two owners. Of course that said I have issues with our mandatory insurance, and licensed for autos. We don't want socialized medicine but will make sure people pay mandatory car insurance and have tags on it. We live in a crazy world. Namaste-Anora

If that is true that is a big hole. As was the case in 911 it could be catastrophic! But shouldn't a sale of an aircraft require for certain documents to be registered with government? The amount is so much that the IRS should be collecting certain taxes for it right?
